10 The Immune System Is a highly complex and interrelated system which protects the body against infections and diseases. The immune system is comprised of cells, tissues, and organs and can be broadly divided into two major components: Innate immunity Is a type of general protection. Everyone is born with innate immunity. Adaptive immunity Develops over an individual s lifetime. Both components interact and work together. The gastrointestinal tract possesses a complex array of both the innate and adaptive mechanisms which might be favorably affected by nutrients like dietary fibers such as ResistAid.

11 How the immune system works Pathogens The first line of defense against foreign organisms are forms of barrier tissues such as the skin that stop the entry of organisms into our bodies. Furthermore, there are biological and chemical barriers such as normal gut microflora and acidity of the stomach. If, however, these barrier layers are penetrated, the body contains cells (phagocytes) that respond rapidly to the presence of the invader. They engulf foreign organisms and kill them without the need for antibodies (cell-mediated barrier). There are further immediate challenges like soluble molecules etc (not shown).
