What they must have Privates Incentive to invest Guaranteed return Shareholder contentment Germplasm and technology/ability to use it Publics Publics Financial support Sustainability Stakeholder contentment Germplasm and technology/ability to use it Privates
Percentage of Parentage Last 30 years One program builds upon the success of another
Competition Cooperation Germplasm exchange Germplasm exchange provides the fulcrum by which cooperation and competition are balanced
What you can expect Positioning Conventional varieties Advanced technologies (partial list) DHs MAS SNP platforms GBS Branding to expand footprint GMO varieties Transgenics, intragenics
What you must do Keep up and do your homework Separate hype from reality Know the law Expect, if not demand, credibility of the messengers Convince Connie the Consumer that biotech wheat is safe, affordable, and nutritious
Agriculture is under attack! Are today s farmers losing their voice with the consumer?
Glutenoia! A vapor-locked state of hysteria induced by fear of genetic modifications and agronomic malpractices, producing outrage and ostracism of any plant that produces gluten.
What they re saying about your crop and our industry will just flatten your ears...

What did that say? Gluten-free foods: It s not just celiacs who are sensitive. It turns out the rest of us are busting buttons because of the grain-based protein. Now prepared foods, cookbooks, and magazines are going gluten-free and even fine restaurants and resorts are catering to the cause.

The Davis Dogma Unnatural Frankengrains in last 50 yrs Gamma irradiation, Na azide Even organic is unnatural Unhealthy Amylopectin and gliadin make us fat appetite stimulants Whole-wheat bread has same GI as a candybar Eliminating wheat from diet removes hunger between meals Consuming CHOs triggers formation of visceral fat, LDLs heart disease and obesity Arthritis, diabetes, dementia Gliadin peptides bind to opiate receptors in brain euphoria addiction
Fact or Fable? Gluten in modern wheat differs in structure from the gluten in older forms of wheat. Modern wheat is higher in amylopectin. No coincidence that the diabetes epidemic parallels increased consumption of modern wheat. If you can t say no, substitute with an older form of wheat such as spelt. Really?
I don't mind lying, but I hate inaccuracy ~Samuel Butler Research shows that those who consume more whole grains may have lower risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. Nutrients in the fiber component are essential! Dr. David Jenkins, founder of the Glycemic Index (GI), includes whole wheat pasta/cereals in Top 10 healthy foods Breeding tactics used in wheat are no different than those used to breed vegetables (let s leave out the drama). Breeders rely on natural mutations accrued over millenia, rarely those induced by irradiation or chemically
So, whatever happened to the concept of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains? Gluten sensitivity went viral
Gluten sensitivity These days, if you don t have it, you re not stylish
The new order on gluten disorders Incidence (U.S.) Symptoms Wheat allergy Gluten Sensitivity Celiac Desease <1% (children) 6% 1% Hives, congestion, nausea Like celiac, without intestinal damage; others Diagnosis Antibody presence Eliminate other disorders Treatment Avoid wheat Small amounts may be tolerable Abdominal pain, diarrhea, anemia, osteoporosis, cancer; or none Gene tests (2) Blood tests antibodies Biopsy Strict wheat-free diet 1 out of 14 of us in this room will probably show some type of adverse reaction to gluten
What Shall We Do? Don t just do nothing! Don t waste your time on blogs Takes two to lie. One to lie, one to listen. Search for facts about wheat, good and bad cwb.ca/public/en/library/research/popups/wheatfacts Your own NWIC! (no advertisement intended) Now, communicate those facts, with offense but with no offense Who is our champion? Messaging for nutritive benefits is not independent of the messaging for biotechnology Let s do some research!

Q/A on climate How hot was it last summer? What happens when the fog lifts in CA? How often is it muggy in New York? What does a bad weather forecaster say when asked why he was fired?
