2 MINERALS RUMEN ENHANCERS MOIST FEEDS DRIED FEEDS All commercial entities have their own unique challenges and opportunities; farming is no different. After what has proved to be a better year for the livestock farmer, 2018 looks set to be similar based on commodity price predictions. To be more successful farmers must assess the efficiency of each element of their business and look to maximise their output. Specialist Nutrition partners with farmers to help them unlock the full potential of their farm. By examining our customers operation and offering a unique range of products coupled with tailored nutritional advice, we enable farms to realise their full capabilities. Our approach to farming is based on maximising output in a profitable way; extra litres and kilos produced in this manner will increase net income. It is true to say that Moist Feeds, a co-product from the alcohol industry, will profitably benefit any ruminant animal s diet. Our supply of this product continues to grow, reflecting the success of Irish food and drink products worldwide. As farmers search for ways to increase their production and unlock their full farm potential, Moist Feeds are increasingly becoming part of their conversations and demand for these products is growing. Another feed which is playing a part in increasing farm efficiency is Liquid Feeds. Liquids are long established in our marketplace, especially molasses. With the demise of our sugar industry we no longer have cheap molasses but newer blends which enrich molasses with protein. These products are very interesting to our customers who are looking at ways to increase their efficiency. So to finish, we see a very different future facing into Our team has grown to meet this need and we now have a core of five nutritional specialists calling to farms. This, combined with the backup of our excellent logistics and telesales team in Waterford, means we are well equipped to continue to partner with farmers to help them unlock their full farm potential. We look forward to working with you to help you achieve this, Jim Buckley Managing Director LIQUID FEEDS PIGS MEET OUR TEAM: ADDITIVES Disclaimer: Errors and Omissions Excepted. All sales are subject to terms and conditions - copy available on request. Please consult our qualified agricultural advisors. Suggested feeding rates are produced as a guide only and many other factors may have an overriding effect on animal response; no performance guarantee can be given. Rations should be carefully balanced for energy and protein, contain sufficient forage to maintain rumen function and be fortified with an appropriate vitamin and mineral supplement. Animals must have constant access to clean water. In all activities Specialist Nutrition adheres to the highest standard of health and safety procedures, and environmental compliance. We strongly recommend to all customers that they review their farm health and safety practices, and work environment to ensure they operate in a safe working conditions. 6 10 RUMEN ENHANCERS ESSENTIAL FOR THE PRODUCTIVITY OF HIGH PERFORMANCE ANIMALS RUMEN ENHANCERS ESSENTIAL FOR THE PRODUCTIVITY OF HIGH PERFORMANCE ANIMALS 11 FEED GRADE UREA Vistapre-T is a unique liquid pre-treatment product that creates a window of opportunity to unlock the energy potential from fibre in forage. This allows producers to extract more value from their homegrown forages. FEED GRADE UREA provides a good source of effective rumen degradable protein (ERDP) to adult ruminants, but care should always be taken to ensure diets are correctly balanced. As feeding levels are very low due to its high nitrogen content, it is essential that urea be mixed thoroughly with other feeds prior to offering to animals. Vistapre-T is a liquid product added to forage prior to feeding and water must be added. Quantity fed is dependent on DMI. Consult with your nutritionist for application rates to your forage. FEED AND FORAGE PRE-TREATMENT HOW DOES IT WORK? Pits Bacteria 1 2 Breaks down forage roughening up the surface of the fibre causing pits to form. These pits enable the easy attachment and colonisation of anaerobic bacteria, reducing the lag time to digestion. NOTE: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANY UREA OTHER THAN FEED GRADE UREA BE OFFERED IN DIETS FOR LIVESTOCK WHERE USE OF UREA AS A FEED ADDITIVE IS REQUIRED, PROFESSIONAL ADVICE MUST BE TAKEN AS THE RATES CAN VARY WIDELY. Highly concentrated effective nitrogen source for adult ruminants Supplies rapidly available nitrogen Up to 100g/hd/day Beef Up to 100g/hd/day Vistapre-T causes faster colonisation of fibrous material Good balancer for low protein, high energy feeds Can be used to preserve moist forage or grain Alkaline ph results from hydrolysis with water The highest % of protein of any feed on the market, when used correctly will reduce the protein cost of any ration Bag Size 25kgs Store in secure cool dry conditions. Care should be taken to ensure correct amounts are weighed and that the straight material is kept away from animal contact. Improves digestibility of a wide range of forages Increase DMD value and ME value of different forages Make the most of home grown forages Liquid application to speed activity As with other dry feeds, Feed Grade Urea should be stored in cool dry conditions. Care should be taken to ensure correct amounts are weighed into rations and that the straight material is kept well away from animal contact. Urea is normally available to all areas throughout the year, though adequate notice needs to be given to ensure timely delivery of small loads.

The amount and type of mycotoxin produced varies by the type of mould prevalent during different environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. Stress on crops from insects, weeds and weather also influence mould growth and mycotoxin production. Mycotoxins can lower feed consumption and feed conversion, reduce disease resistance, increase reproductive problems, reduce performance, and restrict genetic expression of traits. 9 16 RUMEN ENHANCERS ESSENTIAL FOR THE PRODUCTIVITY OF HIGH PERFORMANCE ANIMALS MOIST FEEDS 17 Axcelera-C from AB Neo is the world s first Accelerator for calves. Each calf is offered only a handful of Axcelera-C from day 3 until weaning to supplement the existing calf milk diet. Enhanced calf nutrition is the route to lifetime performance for beef and dairy cattle, and Axcelera-C is an easy way of supplying the calf with even more lactose. Axcelera-C applies unique formulation and process technology to create a highly palatable, ultra-high lactose accelerator for calves. Unlike liquid milk, it enters and is digested directly in the rumen, accelerating its development from day 3. Trials show accelerated calves grow faster, show faster rumen development and can be weaned earlier, with reduced growth check at weaning. Incidence and severity of nutritional scours are also reduced. C TRAFFORDGOLD comes from the Cerestar processing facility in Manchester. It is produced as a result of processing wheat to make four key ingredients for human foodstuffs; starch, glucose syrups, vital wheat gluten and alcohol. C Traffordgold can be fed to most livestock in a wide range of feeding situations. Whether used as part of a total mixed ration (TMR), as a sole concentrate feed or even as a forage replacer, care should be taken to ensure sufficient long fibre is fed. This allowed him to feed individual cows more precisely while maintaining overall performance and body condition throughout the season. To ensure more efficient use of his feed and better intake into the cows, the TMR diet was altered. During the winter this diet consisted of grass and maize silage, Brewers Grains from Specialist Nutrition and a 4-way mix of rolled wheat, maize meal, soya and beet pulp. The cows were then fed to yield with a 17% dairy nut in the robot. With this mix his cows consumed an average daily intake of 60kg of fresh weight throughout the winter months; which increased intake by 8% in its entirety compared to previous years. Richard Whelan, a dairy farmer from Clonard in Co. Meath, has some of the top pedigree Holstein cows in the country. Richard is milking these high potential cows on a grazing platform of 80 acres and a further 40 acres away from the yard. With the abolition of milk quotas in 2016 and the introduction of a Lely robotic milking system to his farm, a new opportunity opened for Richard to further tailor his cows diet. In 2016, the herd produced on average over 11,000ltrs of milk per cow, at 4.11% fat and 3.24% protein. Resulting in an average of total milk solids produced in the last year of 844kgs; the farm is certainly reaching its full capabilities. Working with Pat Coakley from Specialist Nutrition they recognised there was an opportunity to fine tune their feeding programme in order to get more from their existing herd. With this in mind, in the Autumn of 2015 they began to use a combination of Eornagold, maize silage, treated grain and soya, while altering the mix depending on grass growth rates to ensure sufficient daily dry matter intake levels. Resulting in 1,700kg increase in milk yields from 2015 to A co-product from the distilling industry Eornagold is high in protein, a good source of energy and has the added advantage of being very palatable, which increases animal intakes. The Buttimers introduced Eornagold at the shoulders of the year and the winter months, when they are buffer feeding at high levels. Pat explains further Eornagold included at these key times of the year increases the energy density of the diet to maintain yield and build condition for stale cows, while the fresh calvers in the autumn have improved intake levels needed for a productive early lactation period. Tom Buttimer and his son Alan are farming in Knockvale Farm Lyre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. To fill their winter contract with their local co-op they are milking a split calving herd of 110 high yielding Holstein Friesians cows. Over the last number of years, the challenge for the Buttimers has been to make the most of their farm output from a limited grazing platform of just 46 acres. Due to their high stocking rates, the Buttimers need to buffer feed at certain times throughout the grazing season. Alan explains with the type of cow we have here and the limited grazing area, our focus is to keep the diet right for these cows to reach their potential in a way that allows us to cost effectively get more milk from the same number of cows. AT A GLANCE 110 COWS 9,217LTRS PER COW land Potential 46 ACRES GRAZING PLATFORM 20% INCREASED MILK OUTPUT UNLOCKING LAND POTENTIAL One of the key challenges facing the Buttimers in their ambition to unlock their farm potential was the limited grazing platform available to them. With a high stocking rate of 2.4 cows per acre on this limited grazing platform, Tom & Alan were keen not to overgraze their available grassland. In order to achieve this goal Eornagold is substituted at key times of the year. Alan explained Grazing land is a limited but important resource for us. We re very careful not to poach land during wet winter spells, especially at the shoulders of the grazing season as this would affect grass regrowth. Introducing Eornagold at key times of the year has allowed us to carefully manage our grassland. Always store this product on a clean and dry concrete base. Whether fed fresh or ensiled, it should be clamped, the air excluded, consolidated and covered with a secure clean airtight sheet. Contact our team for any additional handling & storage advice. UNLOCKING FARMER POTENTIAL In order for Tom and Alan to reach their true farm potential and increase their farm profitability, they needed to get more from their current herd numbers. Working with Specialist Nutrition and incorporating Eornagold into their diet, has enabled Tom and Alan to achieve this. Pitting Eornagold has also given them peace of mind in knowing that they have a reliable source of feed. All while driving their farm profits in a sustainable way.

16 30 LIQUID FEEDS CASE STUDY 31 LIQUIGOLD LIQUIGOLD is a liquid feed made of molasses CMS, syrup and raffinate. LiquiGold is suitable for inclusion in the diets of all ruminant livestock and can offer a very cost effective way to increase the palatability of feeds whilst contributing good levels of energy and protein. TIPPERARY DAIRY FARMER FOCUSES ON MANAGING EARLY LACTATION USING LIQUID FEEDS TO UNLOCK HIS FARM'S POTENTIAL Donal Maher, a dairy farmer from Drangan in South Tipperary calved 170 Fresian dairy cows in the spring of The herd who are grazing a block of 75ha, yielded an average of just over 5,900ltr while maintaining high milk solids of 477kg per cow in Approaching a point where his grassland was nearly maximised, Donal looked at cost effective ways to improve his farms profitability by using bought and home-grown feed. To achieve this, he began working closely with Specialist Nutrition on his nutritional management and has improved farm performance in a sustainable and profitable way; growing cow numbers from 37 to today s 170 strong herd. Achieving this strong farm growth while also sustaining impressive fertility rates and increasing yields, has proven that it can be accomplished in a very profitable way. High energy liquid blend Animal Potential Dry Matter 62% Crude Protein 16% Oil 3% NDF 0% Starch Trace Sugar 46% ME (MJ/KG DM) 12 Contains high levels of quality sugar and protein Provides sugar in two forms; sucrose and glucose Easy to handle in all weather conditions Highly palatable Helps to promote high dry matter intakes Highly digestible and contributes to rumen fermentation Ideal for binding dusty or mealy ingredients in your TMR Beef Cattle Typically 10% can be included depending on the nature of the other feeds in the mix and subsequent storage facilities for the finished ration Typically 2kg/hd/day Young Stock Typically 10% of diet from 4 weeks of age UNLOCKING ANIMAL POTENTIAL Ensuring cows reach their yield potential, while maintaining strong milk solids throughout the year, is the key principle Donal worked to achieve with his nutritionist, Michael Cleary from Specialist Nutrition. The successful formula has been to provide Donal s cows with a balanced, high energy diet once they calve through a combination of grass silage, whole crop cereals, straights and Liquigold from Specialist Nutrition. Body condition scoring is constantly monitored, feed is then manipulated to suit conditions whether cows are housed fulltime during the winter or are buffer fed during the spring and autumn grazing months. Donal states that It s vital to feed your cow well in the first 12 weeks after calving. Through this focus, I ve been able to manage a tight calving interval of under 370-days in the past few years, even with some of the poor springs we ve experienced. Paying close attention to nutrition during this critical period enabled Donal to achieve an impressive 74% cows calved within a 6-week period last year. Michael Cleary explains that in early lactation it is essential to provide a high energy, palatable diet during the breeding season and up to 60 days in calf to increased dry matter intakes and minimise body condition loss. This is achieved by using products like Liquigold, wholecrop and a choice of straights; then balancing them correctly in terms of nutrition and mineral content. AT A GLANCE 37 COWS 170 COWS 75HA GRAZING PLATFORM Liquigold helps to blend the overall TMR mix together to minimise sorting, and guarantees cows are feeding at a consistent rate for the entire day. Liquigold from Specialist Nutrition, at 1.5kg per head, has particualrly helped his management of the herds body conditioning. Before using Liquigold, I experienced greater fluctuations in herd body condition loss. I have now reduced this loss after calving, which in turn has helped to increase submission rates; especially at the early stages of the breeding season. I credit this to an increased intake of up to 10% due to Liquigold s palatability, along with the balance of protein and energy that Liquigold provides in the diet. UNLOCKING FARMER POTENTIAL +5,900LTR PER COW 74% CALVED WITHIN 6 WEEKS 477KG MILK SOLIDS Tanks should be built to hold and dispatch bulk liquids and care should be taken to ensure they are cleaned out from time to time to ensure no build-up of sediment. 4 inch diameter pipework is adequate to handle LiquiGold. Available in lots of 10 tonne or greater. Discounts available on full artic loads. Donal says Working with Specialist Nutrition has enabled me to review my full nutritional programme to ensure I have absolute control over my herds diet, while continuing to drive farm profitability. As we all know, no two springs are the same so I need to have flexibility within my nutritional plan while ensuring I deliver a consistent performance. This, along with Liquigold, has improved my herds performance and overall herd health; giving me a more sustainable farming enterprise and a big increase in farm profitability.

Biotal Axphast Gold is the highest spec wet grass treatment on the market. Improved animal performance and effluent reductions of up to 50% from the resultant silage is normal. Management NURSERY Accomodation type Medication ASSURED NUTRITION FOR PIGLETS Health status PIGLETS Indoor/ Outdoor bred Sale weight BIOTAL SUPERSILE FOR NORMAL CONDITIONS DRY MATTER FROM 20-27% Wet weather conditions and/or low sunlight hours at harvest leave the natural sugars in grass very diluted, <3% of fresh weight. This leads to a slow, inefficient and sometimes incomplete fermentation in the clamp or bale. Biotal Supersile Gold contains a patented enzyme package that will release sugar normally locked in the grass fibre. The lactic acid producing bacteria supplied then utilises this sugar to drop the ph of the clamp quickly, preserving valuable protein and nutrients in the silage as efficiently as possible as-well as total clamp/bale DM. Physical form FEED Wet/ Dry SPECIALIST NUTRITION ENSURES QUALITY FEED THROUGH: Ongoing university research programmes and commercial trials Fixed formula diets for product consistency High quality ingredients from a matrix of raw materials Specialised production facilities Goals FARM Facilities 180 commercial trials +481g/pig over 22 days FCR Using Biotal inoculants allows us to maximise preservation while producing the best quality grass silage. Daniel and David Drum, Dairy and Beef Farmers, Delvin, Co. Westmeath. BIOTAL AXCOOL GOLD FOR DRY GRASS DRY MATTER FROM 27%+ The sun is a very good additive and that s why high DM grass (>30%) usually makes well preserved silage. Its higher DM and residual sugar level does however, make it vulnerable to the growth of yeast and mould at feed-out. These harmful spoilage organisms utilise sugar and fermentation acid to grow, producing heat at the clamp face through to the feed barrier. This results in silage waste and a reduction in feeding quality and forage DM intakes. Using Biotal Axcool gold ensures your silage remains cool and stable throughout its feeding period. 20 38 ADDITIVES FOR WHOLE CROP ADDITIVES FOR MAIZE SILAGE 39 FORAGE SPECIFIC ADDITIVES FOR ALL FARM PRODUCED FEEDS FORAGE SPECIFIC ADDITIVES FOR ALL FARM PRODUCED FEEDS BIOTAL WHOLECROP Wholecrop is harvested using a self-propelled silage harvester which has a head similar to a maize head, so that it can cut and take in cereal plants without grain loss. At the point of harvest an additive is applied to the material which helps ferment the wholecrop to a level where maximum quality is maintained in the clamp and also maintain the stability of the clamp face at feed out. BIOTAL WHOLECROP GOLD MILL The additive most widely used throughout the country for wholecrop is called Wholecrop Gold for fermented wholecrop and Wholecrop Gold Mill for hi-dry matter wholecrop. BIOTAL SOLOMAIZE BIOTAL MAIZECOOL ADDITIVES FOR CRIMPED CEREALS BIOTAL BIOCRIMP Normally grain is harvested when it can only be broken using your thumbnail and forefinger. If the grain can be squashed between the thumb and forefinger, the grain is still too wet. The cereal is cut with a combine harvester and then passed through a crimper roller which cracks the grain. At the crimping stage, an additive known as BioCrimp is applied using a liquid applicator to quickly preserve and maintain aerobic stability. It is then ensiled in a clamp, rolled and covered with a sheet of plastic to the point where the material is air tight. Wholecrop Gold has improved preservation, reduced losses and increased the ME of my end product. I have been making wholecrop for 10 years and although I tried it once without an inoculant, I would never make wholecrop without Biotal Wholecrop Gold again. Brian Rohan, Dairy Farmer, Shanahoe, Co. Laois. As a high dry matter high sugar and relatively low protein forage, harvested maize typically results in a quick and efficient fermentation in the clamp requiring no assistance in dropping its ph. The resulting silage is however extremely vulnerable to spoilage during feed-out. Heating and moulding at the clamp face are the result of air being supplied to the naturally occurring ensiled yeasts. These aerobic organisms can make quick work of this starchy forage so a proven anti-microbial treatment such as Biotal SoloMaize should be applied at harvest. My best investment each year is Biotal SoloMaize. It keeps my maize silage cool, which really pays for itself in the summer time. I would not make maize silage without SoloMaize. Why not upgrade? Biotal MaizeCool gold has all the anti-microbial benefits of Biotal SoloMaize and more. Its specific enzyme package also improves the cell wall digestibility of the stover component. James Tynan, Dairy Farmer, Ardboy, Co Kilkenny.
