24 Negative energy balance cause or result? As cows transition from the dry period into lactation, they undergo a period of negative energy balance. The demands for milk production cannot be met by feed intake. In order to overcome their negative energy balance, cows break down fat reserves to produce non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs).
