Rostmi Deprtment of Animl Science, College of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mshhd, Mshhd, P. O. Box: , Irn Astrct: A study ws conducted to evlute the effects of dding levels of dried whey powder (DW) to prcticl-type diets on the performnce nd cecl micro orgnism of roilers. DW ws used in isocloric nd isonitrogenous diets t levels of 0,, 4 nd 8 percent nd fed from -49 dys of ge. Smples of cecl contents t 7, 4 nd 5th dys of ge were collected for counting totl micro orgnism, coliforms nd slmonell in suspension of cecl contents. Body weight gin of chickens fed to 8 percent DW ws improved t 49 dys of ge. Adding DW to the diets from to 8 percent, improved feed to gin rtio t -4 nd 4-49 dys of ge. Crcss weight in chickens received nd 4 percent DW ws mximum (p<0.05) t 49 dys of ge. Gstrointestinl trct weight of chickens fed DW ws significntly incresed (p<0.05) when compred to control group. Totl counts nd coliforms of cecl contents significntly incresed in roilers received DW during 0 4 dys of ge (p<0.05). No slmonell colony ws isolted from the smples. Findings of the present study indicte tht -4 percent DW in the diet of roilers hd eneficil effects on performnce. Chnges in cecl micro flor indicted n environment more hostile to slmonell estlishment from 0- dys of ge. Key words: Dried whey, cecl micro flor, performnce, nutrition, chickens Introduction Whey or liquid remining from cheese or csein production is one of the most vlule protein sources in humn food chin. In spite of its lnced nutrients, liquid whey is disposed s wste product. Liquid whey hs high iologicl oxygen demnd so its disposl in rivers kills living orgnisms. Environmentl pollution is lso concern in mny countries (Thivend, 977). In theory protein content of whey includes lph nd etlctgluolins nd cn e used vlule source of protein to nimls (Brunner, 98). Dried whey (DW) tht is produced from its liquid form cn e used in chickens (Susmel et l., 995). For yers, DW is used in monogstric nutrition (Blloun nd Khjrern, 974; Dmron et l., 97). It is shown tht dietry supplementtion of whey powder linerly increses ody weight gin nd nitrogen retention in turkey poults (Blloun nd Khjrern, 974) nd in roiler chickens (Al-Uidi nd Bird, 964). Dietry supplementtion of DW to monogstrics significntly improved digestile protein nd ft, feed to gin rtio (Blloun nd Khjrern, 974) nd increses the sorption of minerls like C, P, Cu, Fe nd Mg (Erl nd Slim, 98). Recently use of ntiiotics s growth promoter is et l., 977), lctose cn not e digested or sored efficiently nd lmost reches to cec nd lrge intestine intct (Lnghout, 989; Ziggers, 000). In cec the popultion of useful cteri like lctocillus nd ifidocteri (Ziggers, 000) increses nd the ph of the GIT, due to incresing production of voltile ftty cids (VFAs), decreses. Therefore the environment of GIT ecomes unsuitle for the ctivity nd prolifertion of pthogens like Slmonell. Bsed on Nurmi concept of competitive exclusion (Nurmi nd Rntl, 97), pthogens will e expelled out of the gut y useful cteri if it lredy occupied the gut sites. Coloniztion of useful micro flor in the gut of young irds tht is relted to gut conditions, cn inhiit further coloniztion of pthogens (Nurmi nd Rntl, 97). Lctose s preiotic cn llevite the conditions of the gut in fvour of coloniztion of useful cteri (Lnghout, 998; Ziggers, 000). Therefore, the ojective of this study ws to evlute the effect of dietry levels of DW on performnce of roiler chickens nd its effect on some microil popultions of the cec nd the possile excretion of slmonell from feed origin during rering period. Mterils nd Methods nned (Ziggers, 000). Results The performnce of chickens including ody BWG, FI nd feed to gin rtio (F/G) t 0-, -4 nd 4-49 dys of ge re presented in Tle. Levels of DW hd no effect on BWG t 0- dys of ge ut ws significnt (P<0.05) t -4 dys of ge. By incresing the levels of DW up to 4 percent, BWG improved. BWG ws lso incresed t 4-49 dys of ge (P<0.05). 8 percent DW hd no effect on BWG when compred to control (no dded DW). At 4-49 dys of ge, DW hd significnt effect on BWG ut this effect for, 4, nd 8 percent DW ws not significnt. The FI t 0- dys of ge nd 8 percent DW ws significntly higher thn those of the other tretments (Tle ) ut t -4 dys of ge, this level of DW decresed FI significntly (P<0.05). At this period, the highest FI ws for percent level of DW (4.7 g). FI ws not ffected y dietry tretments t 4-49 dys of ge, lthough the sme trend s -4 dys of ge ws oserved. At 0- dys of ge, DW hd negtive effect on F/G (P<0.05) ut this effect reversed nd the est F/G ws for 4 percent DW (Tle ). However, this effect etween 4 nd 8 percent DW ws not significnt. The overll BWG (0-49 dys) ws significntly improved (P<0.05) y ddition of nd 4 percent DW (Tle ). The overll FI mong tretments ws not ffected y dietry tretments. However, ddition of DW improved the overll F/G of roilers significntly (P<0.05). Addition of DW up to 4 percent level significntly improved the overll F/G lthough etween 4 nd 8 percent DW, this effect ws not significnt (.8 nd.7 vs.54 nd.44). Crcss weight t 49 dys of ge ws significntly incresed y ddition of nd 4 percent DW (P<0.05). However t this stge, 8 percent DW hd no significnt effect on crcss weight when compred with control group (Tle 4). The mount or the rtio of ft pd to live ody weight in 4 percent DW tretment ws significntly higher thn those of the others (60.04 g nd.8 percent respectively). Dietry supplementtion of DW significntly incresed GIT weight (gut fill) ut s the percentge of live ody weight, it ws not significnt. The ppernce of cec in chickens received DW were expnded nd fomy when compred with control group (no dded DW) group (Fig. ). Smples of cecl contents t different ges in MCA nd EMB cultures didn t show ny slmonell colony ut the numer of E. coli colonies nd totl counts were significntly higher (P<0.05) in 4 nd 8 percent DW (tle 5) t 7 nd 4 dys of ge. No slmonell contmintion ws lso oserved in cultures tht re usully detectle y the formtion of colourless nd red to pink colonies. Discussion For the yers whey powder hs een known s source of unidentified fctor (UGF) nd used in poultry diets (Susmel et l., 995).
