Technical Data Sheet EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology 100% Acrylic, Low VOC Capable Pre-Composite Polymer Technology for Interior/Exterior Flat to Semigloss Architectural Coatings (formerly EXP-4340) Regional Product Availability Description North America EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer is one of several Pre-Composite Polymers which is based on a new and unique technology that offers improvements in TiO hiding efficiency through the development of a polymer-pigment composite. During the paint making process, the pre-composite polymer combines with TiO to form a polymer-pigment composite which improves both the wet and dry hiding efficiency of the pigment. The hiding improvement gives formulators the option of either using less TiO or increasing the hiding in their current formulations at equal TiO levels. In addition, barrier performance properties of the film are maintained or improved. Formulations can be developed which emphasize the performance improvements at similar cost or maintain performance at reduced cost while taking advantage of the increase in TiO hiding efficiency. EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer works with most slurry and dry grades of TiO and is compatible with other acrylic binder technologies. In addition, EVOQUE 1133 works well with ROPAQUE Opaque Polymers, offering an additive effect for improved hiding efficiency and reducing dependence on TiO. Benefits All-acrylic polymer prepared with no APEO-containing surfactants Improves both the dry and wet hiding efficiency of TiO Compatible with most common dry and slurry grades of TiO in North America Excellent exterior durability Formulation latitude from flat to semigloss for both interior and exterior use Expanded formulation latitude to address VOC regulations < 50 g/l VOC to 150 g/l VOC Works in tandem with all ROPAQUE Opaque Polymers to offer further TiO reduction Page 1 of 18 EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology / Dow Coating Materials 01/013, Rev. 1
Typical Physical Properties TiO Recommendations (These properties are typical but do not constitute specifications). Different grades of TiO will have different surface characteristics, which may affect how EVOQUE 1133 interacts. Most grades of TiO that have been evaluated have shown to be compatible with EVOQUE Below are some of the commercial grades of slurry and dry TiO that have been evaluated in our laboratory. Refer to Form# , TiO Recommendations for EVOQUE Pre-Composite Polymer Technology, for a listing of all EVOQUE Polymers and TiO s evaluated to date. 3 Handling Dry and Slurry TiO Improvements in TiO efficiency can be obtained when using either dry or slurry grades of titanium dioxide and EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology. Optimal Composite formation is the key to delivering hiding and other performance properties. No special equipment or steps are needed to make paints with EVOQUE 1133, which can be used in a standard paint making protocol; that is, a millbase (grind or dispersion tank) and letdown (mixer tank) with good results. Please refer to Form # , Conventional Paint Making with EVOQUE, for more details. Pease contact your Technical Service Representative if you need further assistance. Formulating Guidelines Extenders One of the other most important, yet sometimes overlooked, ingredients in paint is mineral extenders. Most paint formulations contain TiO for hiding and some combination of pigment extenders to achieve a desired paint PVC (pigment volume concentration). Extenders can either be viewed as a filler, in which case the least expensive mineral is normally chosen, or as value adding materials. Much work has been done in developing starting point formulations looking at various ways to maintain PVC when reducing the level of TiO in paints made with EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology. While our recommendation is to use or increase the level of ROPAQUE Opaque Polymer, other options like increasing extenders would also apply based upon the expected performance properties needed in the final paint. Calcined clays are used extensively to extend TiO in paints and are advertised as promoting both wet and dry hiding properties. Work done in our technical service group has demonstrated that while this class of materials does show improved wet hide in a non-tio containing recipe, in fully formulated paint, the wet hide advantage is minimal or nonexistent. Other extender types, such as Nepheline Syenite and Calcium Carbonate of various particles sizes have also been examined in numerous formulations without any formulation issues. Opaque Polymer ROPAQUE Ultra EF Opaque Polymer is a polymeric pigment which is designed to provide hiding in architectural coatings. ROPAQUE Opaque Polymers enable the formulator to improve properties and realize cost savings. They can be effectively used in various formulations when making composite paints with EVOQUE We have found that higher levels of ROPAQUE Opaque Polymers can be used in conjunction with EVOQUE 1133 when making composite paints as a way to maintain PVC and VS while offering another way to further reduce TiO in a formulation. As with any opaque polymer formulation, the formulator needs to assess the desired gloss and hiding needs to determine the best level of opaque polymer to use. Dispersants The types and levels of pigment dispersants play an important role in attaining a desirable balance of stability, rheology, and gloss in typical paint formulations. In composite paints containing EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer, it is also important to select the right dispersant type and level to make certain that the interaction of the EVOQUE 1133 with the surface of the TiO particles is complete and effective to achieve good hiding. Page 3 of 18 EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology / Dow Coating Materials 01/013, Rev. 1
Hydrophobic copolymer dispersants such as TAMOL TM 731A, TAMOL 165A, TAMOL 00, TAMOL 011 and hydrophilic copolymers such as TAMOL 114 work best with EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer. It has been found that dispersant levels of approximately 0.8 % (on total pigment solids) result in a good balance of stability and rheology without affecting the reactivity of EVOQUE Higher levels ( %) may be needed when using TAMOL 00/011 type dispersants. It is best to avoid or minimize the use of strong acid or phosphate types of dispersants as sole dispersants in a formulation, as they may interfere with the interaction of EVOQUE 1133, thus yielding poor hiding in formulated paints. Rheology Modifiers and Thickeners In many composite paints made with EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer, the overall thickener demand may be reduced if the formulator is starting with an existing benchmark formulation. This is due primarily to the TiO -polymer composite formation, which has a higher hydrodynamic volume than the volumes of the individual polymer and pigment particles from which it is made. This interaction typically reduces the level of thickeners needed to achieve the target viscosity profile of the paint. However, it is recommended that the formulator monitor this effect, since ingredients such as letdown binder and thickener type may also have an impact. Non- associative thickeners, i.e. low to mid molecular weight (Mw) cellulosic type thickeners like QP-4000 and QP-15000, work well with EVOQUE 1133, as do most associative thickeners (HASE and HEUR). HASE (Hydrophobically modified Alkali Soluble Emulsion) thickeners like ACRYSOL DR-6600, ACRYSOL RM-7, ACRYSOL TT-935, ACRYSOL TT- 615, and ACRYSOL DR-110 allow the formulator a broad choice of products to be used in a wide formulation and rheology range. Non-solvent containing HEUR (Hydrophobically modified Ethylene Oxide Urethane) thickeners like those listed below, offer the formulator a wide selection of choices to achieve the desired rheology from Pseudoplastic to Newtonian. - ACRYSOL RM-995, RM-44, RM-8W: KU-builders (low shear viscosity) - ACRYSOL RM-3000, RM-5000, RM-00NPR: ICI-builders (high shear viscosity) - ACRYSOL SCT-75: unique KU/ICI balance (product contains solvent) The choice of ACRYSOL Rheology Modifiers has a major impact on paint performance. It facilitates stability during storage, good viscosity for brush, roller or spray applications and enhanced performance and aesthetic appearance for flat to high gloss paints. Listed below are thickener comparisons for two suggested flat formulations (F and F-1133ZnO-) and semigloss formulation (SG ). Comparisons include a benchmark control and its comparable hiding EVOQUE 1133 & ROPAQUE Opaque Polymer counterpart. Paints were formulated to comparable Stormer (KU) and ICI (poise) viscosities. Note, thickener ratios may change and in many cases, KU builder demand is decreased. Page 4 of 18 EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology / Dow Coating Materials 01/013, Rev. 1

Their use in coatings offer rapid dispersability and effective thixotropic thickening which aids in viscosity and sag control of paint. Thixotropy with these thickeners is developed by charge attraction on the particle surface, hydrogen bonding, and the entrapment of liquid within a chain-like network. Coatings formulated with these materials tend to form a gel-like structure at rest, yet when sheared, become thin. When formulating paints using EVOQUE Pre-Composite Polymers, the level of attapulgite materials may be reduced due to the hydrodynamic volume of the polymer-pigment composite that not only thickens the composite stage, but also contributes to the overall rheology of the paint. It is recommended that the formulator reduce levels to no more than 3 pounds/100 gallons to maintain a stable viscosity profile. Page 5 of 18 EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology / Dow Coating Materials 01/013, Rev. 1
Coalescents While the recommended coalescent level for EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer is approximately -4%, we have found that the level of coalescent in paints formulated with EVOQUE 1133 may also depend upon the letdown binder in the formulation. The 3-5% level recommendation for EVOQUE 1133 facilitates excellent film formation at 40 o F/40% Relative Humidity in the starting point flat formulations. The semigloss starting point formulation, which includes RHOPLEX VSR-015 as the letdown binder and is prepared without solvent, also had excellent film formation without the need for any coalescent. Work has also been done using non-volatile coalescents, like Optifilm 400, to achieve the very low VOC formulating spaces for the various regulations across the country without impacting any performance properties. Please consult your Technical Service Representative for more details. Surfactants In formulating paints with EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer, we typically recommend surfactants with high HLB ( 13) at use levels of > lbs/100 gallons to facilitate good paint making and long term stability. Grind surfactants may be needed to help wet the dry TiO and extenders (if used) to facilitate a good pigment dispersion. ECOSURF LF-30 is an APEO-free surfactant that offers excellent pigment surface wetting with low foam during the dispersion process. Other surfactants such as TRITON CF-10, TRITON X-100 along with Surfynol CT-11 also work well. Surfactants such as TERGITOL 15-S-40, TRITON X-405, and Byk-348 are good to aid in adjusting stability, color acceptance, and substrate wetting in a formulation. Use caution when using phosphate ester surfactants, such as Surfynol and Dextrol products. These anionic surfactants can act as co-dispersants and disrupt the formation of the polymer-tio composite thus lowering the hiding efficiency. Defoamers In making paints with EVOQUE 1133, as seen in the starting point formulations included, it is recommended to add some defoamer to the pre-composite polymer and water before adding TiO or a dispersion containing TiO, to keep foam to a minimum while mixing. It is very important to select the proper defoamer when formulating high gloss systems. Tiny bubbles or craters, which may not be visible in flat paint formulations, can be very noticeable in high gloss formulations. As for defoamer recommendations, polysiloxane (silicone) types work best, like Byk-0, Byk-04, Foamstar A-34, Tego 810, and Tego However, mineral oil types, such as HiMar DFC-38, Rhodoline 643, Foamstar SA-3, and Drewplus 475 may also be effective, but typically work at much higher use levels. Of course, VOC contribution, cost, and use level need to be considered also. Page 6 of 18 EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer Technology / Dow Coating Materials 01/013, Rev. 1
Preservatives and Mildewcides KATHON LX 1.5% Microbicide is an effective preservative that helps protect paint formulations based on EVOQUE 1133 Pre-Composite Polymer. The recommended use level is approximately 5 ppm per 1,000 pounds of paint. When formulating with EVOQUE 1133, this microbicide should be added to the grind or premixed with water if it is to be added to the letdown. Preservative efficacy should be evaluated once a final formulation has been selected. Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives may adversely affect the performance of paints based on EVOQUE 1133 Emulsion and are not recommended for use with this polymer. When selecting a preservative, check with the raw material supplier to ensure that formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasers are not present. For exterior application, the use of an effective paint mildewcide is recommended. IPBC mildewcides, such as BIOBAN IPBC 0 Antimicrobial (ROCIMA 0) and BIOBAN IPBC 40 Antimicrobial ( ROCIMA 40), are recommended for use with EVOQUE 1133 Emulsion at a level of 1.6 lbs IPBC solids per 100 gallons of paint. BIOBAN IPBC 40 LE Antimicrobial is formulated in solution form and contains low to no VOC content to help further reduce VOC of the formulation. ROCIMA 63 is another microbicide that contains three different active ingredients for exceptional performance against a broad range of fungi and algae. Generally, it is recommended to use from 0.5 to.0 Lbs per 100 Lbs. of formulation (.5 to 0 lbs/100 gallons).
