1 Transparency/Blackline Master Grade 5 Day 38 Standard 5.NBT.7 The Grocery Excursion Name: Date: You are visiting your grandparents for one week and have been given $200 to purchase groceries for the three of you. Your grandmother has asked that you plan the menu for the week, make your shopping list, and go to the grocery store to shop for the groceries. You know that your grandparents always eat wellbalanced meals, and you feel honored that your grandmother would trust you with such an important task. To help you complete your task, follow the steps below: 1. Plan a well-balanced menu of meals for the week. Your grandmother has all of the recipes and spices she needs, so the menu does not need to be detailed. Name the food you will buy from the grocery store, rather than the name of the recipe. For instance, if you want to have chicken, rice, and green beans for dinner, that is all you need to list. Use the Menu of Meals Blackline Master to record your work. 2. Estimate the cost of each item and the total cost. Record your estimates on the Menu of Meals Blackline Master. 3. Locate and record the prices of all the items you need to purchase. Your teacher will give you more direction on the resource(s) you will use to find these prices. Record the prices on the Menu of Meals Blackline Master. 4. Find the total cost of all your groceries. You may use the tools available to you to find the total cost; however, you must show and give a brief explanation of your work for 4 addition problems. Record your total cost on the Menu of Meals Blackline Master. Record your work and explanation on a separate sheet of paper. (You do not need to consider sales tax for this project.) 5. Modify your menu and recalculate if necessary. Remember that you have a $200 budget! You may need to modify your menu choices if your total cost exceeds $ Determine how you will pay and the change you will receive. Your grandmother gave you the $200 in cash with the following bills: eight $20 bills, two $10 bills, and four $5 bills. Based on your total, explain the bills you will give to the cashier and the change you will receive. You must show your work and give a brief explanation of how you calculated your change. Record your work on a separate sheet of paper. 7. Prepare your presentation. Include the following in your presentation and ensure that you are able to explain to your group: An overview of your menu of meals for the week The total cost of your groceries and an explanation of your work for 1 addition problem An explanation of how you paid and how much change you received A list of challenges you experienced as you worked to complete the project
