Terry Talks Nutrition: Weight Loss
Good Grief! How did we get so FAT? 1992:no state had an obesity rate above 15% 2012:2 out of 3 states have an obesity rate higher than 25%!
Times have changed -Then 1970s: 42% of kids walk or bike to school 1977: People dine at home - 84% of meals and snacks eaten at home 1975: 1.5 televisions per household; most people have only 4 channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS)
Now 2010: 12% of kids walk to school. 2012: average of 3 televisions per household; Basic cable package is usually 80+ stations 2010: 50% of meals eaten out, 1 in 5 breakfasts is from McDonald s. Food is cheap and it is EVERYWHERE!
Childhood Obesity Rates are Skyrocketing Obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the United States -triplethe rate from just one generation ago. DID YOU KNOW? The Robert Wood Johnson foundation spends $100 million in an entire year on grants for researchers studying childhood obesity The food industry spends $100 million dollars by January 4, marketing junk food just to children
The consequences of our modern lifestyle Obesity is the number 2 cause of preventable death Number 1 is smoking Number of Americans with diabetes projected to increase 165% by 2050 (29 million people) A severely obese person is likely to die 8-10 years earlier than a person of normal weight Economic cost of obesity and obesity-related disorders: $325 billion dollars a year The medical costs for an obese person are 42% higher than for a person of normal weight.
What do we eat the most of? 15% of calories from protein 33% of calories from fat 52% of calories from carbohydrates For children under age 19, carbohydrate consumption rate is 55% If you are a carbohydrate addict you are not alone!
PaleolithicDiet vsstandard Diet Paleolithic Diet 30% animal protein 60% animal fat 10% non-starchy carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables no more than 72 grams of carbohydrates daily 50 or less on the Glycemic Index Remember what most Americans are consuming? 15% of calories from protein 33% of calories from fat 52% of calories from carbohydrates
What are Carbohydrates? Food nutrient Converted by the body into sugar (glucose) Unhealthy carbs are converted quickly by the body and spike sugar levels (high glycemic index) a fast route to weight gain, diabetes and heart disease White bread, white rice, white potato, soda, etc Healthy carbs are converted more slowly and don t have the same spiking effect on blood sugar levels (low glycemic index) Whole, unrefined grains; beans; vegetables
But Terry, I LOVE carbs! Pizza, bagels, donuts, chips, stuffing and mashed potatoes, cookies, cake, pasta Some people have a VERY hard time giving up these foods What can help? White Kidney Bean
White Kidney Bean and Carbohydrates Multiple studies have shown that white kidney bean contains a compound (alpha amylase) which prevents carbohydrates in the intestines from being digested How does it work? The enzyme amylase breaks carbohydrates down into glucose, which passes the intestinal wall and enters the bloodstream Alpha amylase blocks this enzyme Prevents amylase from reaching the spot on the carbohydrate chain where it exerts its breaking activity body can t absorb the carbohydrate so it is excreted
How well does white kidney bean extract work? Early studies done at the Mayo Clinic found 95% inhibition of amylase enzyme within 15 minutes (in this experiment 5 or 10 g of white bean extract were given via intubation) 85% reduction of blood sugar spikes Insulin and c-reactive protein levels were also reduced 2 additional studies in people with diabetes found similar effects
But will I lose weight? Studies say YES 12 week study of white kidney bean vsplacebo White kidney bean group lost 7 lbs; placebo group gained a pound 60 day study of white kidney bean vsplacebo White kidney bean group lost 5 lbs; placebo group lost less than 1 lb 30 day study of white kidney bean plus chromium picolinate White kidney bean plus chromium picolinatelost 6.5 lbs; placebo group lost less than a pound More than 10 clinical studies show that use of white kidney bean extract for people who regularly consume carbohydrates can lead to weight loss Also reported blood sugar levels returned to normal 20 minutes faster than normal after using a white kidney bean extract
So how do I use this as part of my diet? Take white kidney bean extract with every carb-containing meal In clinical trials, dosages were mg daily Using highly purified and concentrated white kidney bean reduces dosage requirement to just 2 mg per meal
What about side effects? At high doses, white kidney bean can cause gas and bloating Using low dose concentrated extract with enteric coating ensures extract releases in the intestines, so does not cause gas or bloating CONCLUSION: white kidney bean can be an effective way to promote weight loss for people who regularly consume high levels of carbohydrates
