3 Draft Indian Standard WHEAT BRAN AS LIVESTOCK FEED SPECIFICATION (Second Revision of IS 2239) Not to be reproduced or used as STANDARD without permission of BIS Last Date for Comments FOREWORD (Adoption clause would be added later) This Indian standard was first issued in 1962 and first revised in 1971 to review the provisions stipulated in the existing standard for the various characteristics of wheat bran in order to help in procuring wheat bran of the right quality. In the first revision, the characteristics for crude fat, total ash and husk for foreign food grains were removed and limits for the crude protein and crude fibre were amended. In this second revision, wheat bran has been classified into coarse and fine wheat bran and requirements of moisture have been amended and made stricter. This standard contains clause 4.1 which calls for an agreement between the purchaser and the vendor. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of the standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2:1960 Rules for founding off numerical values (revised). The number of significant places retained in the rounded-off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1 SCOPE 1.1 This standard prescribes the requirements and the methods of test for wheat bran for use as livestock feed. 2 REFERENCES The following standards contain provisions, which through reference in this text, constitute provision of this standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. 4 460(Part 1):1985 Specification for test sieves: Part 1 Wire cloth test sieves (third revision) 2052:2009 Compounded feeds for cattle Specification (fourth revision) 3 REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Description - Wheat bran shall be the outer coating with the minimum of adhering endosperm of the wheat kernel, separated from effectively cleaned wheat in the usual process of milling. The material shall be free from musty and stale odour or sourness and from lumps, dirt and extraneous matter including iron or other metallic pieces. It shall be free from fungus or insect infestation. 3.2 The material shall not contain more than 30 percent by weight of fine powder as determined by sieving 50 g of the material on 500-micron (aperture mm) IS Sieve [see IS 460 (Part 1)] for 2 minutes, weighing the powder passing through the sieve and calculating as percentage of the material. 3.3 The material shall also conform to the requirements prescribed in Table 1. The mouth of each bag shall be either machine-stitched or rolled over and hand stitched with strong jute twine. 4.2 Marking - The following particulars shall be legibly and indelibly marked or labelled on each bag: a) Name of the material; b) Name and address of the manufacturer;

5 c) Guaranteed composition; d) Batch or code number ; e) Net quantity in kg; and f) Date of packing g) Any other requirements given under the Standards of Weights and Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules, BIS Certification Marking The product may also be marked with the Standard Mark The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards. 5 SAMPLING 5.1 Representative samples of the material for tests shall be drawn according to the method prescribed in Annex H of IS Criteria for Conformity A lot shall be considered as conforming to the specification, when: a) each of the test results for crude protein and acid insoluble ash satisfy the requirements as specified in Table 1, and b) the test results on the composite sample satisfy the requirements for the remaining characteristics specified in Table If one or more test results do not satisfy the requirements for crude protein and acid insoluble ash, the following procedure shall be adopted for determining the conformity of the material for these two characteristics: Calculate the mean and range as follows: Mean (X) = Sum of the test results Number of test samples Range (R) = difference between the maximum and the minimum, values of the test results. The requirements for crude protein and acid insoluble ash shall be considered as fulfilled if: X R is equal to or greater than the requirements for crude protein, and X R is less than or equal to the requirement for acid insoluble ash.

6 6 TESTS 6.1 Tests shall be carried out as prescribed in the relevant appendices of IS 7874 (Part 1) specified in col 5 of Table 1 with the exception that 3.1 of IS 7874 (Part 1) which prescribes the grinding of the material before analysis is not applicable. 6.2 Tests for crude protein and acid insoluble ash shall be conducted individually on each of the samples constituting a set of test samples while the tests for the remaining characteristics specified in Table 1, shall be conducted on the composite sample. 6.3 Quality of Reagents Un1ess specified otherwise, pure chemicals shall be employed in tests and distilled water (see IS 1070) shall be used where the use of water as a reagent is intended. NOTE - Pure chemicals shall mean chemicals that do not contain impurities which affect the results of analysis.
