Sugar isn t just in candy it s everywhere: tomato sauce, salad dressing, yogurt, energy drinks Stress is associated with high cortisol levels (the fight or flight hormone); cortisol suppresses the immune system and leaves you susceptible to infections Sleep deprivation has the same effect on the immune system as stress! Imbalanced gut: the good bacteria in our gut help keep the immune system running strong, but when stress, diet, or antibiotics deplete their numbers it can leave us vulnerable to pathogens A pessimistic outlook: don t be a Debbie Downer studies have shown that looking on the bright side and having a positive attitude actually boosts immunity and increases life expectancy!

Welch s being sued for its Fruit Snacks Package shows lots of berries, lists some vitamins, and states made with real fruit Problems first ingredient is fruit juice, followed by corn syrup, sugar and modified corn starch No fiber and 40-50% sugar content the vitamins are added to the product and are NOT derived from the fruit - as the package might lead you to believe Consumers filing the lawsuit believe this product is actually candy disguised as a healthy fruit snack

5 Actual healthy snacks Real fruit like Apples Apples reduce risk of heart disease, help control blood sugar levels and even promote weight loss Eating one medium-sized apple approximately 15 minutes before a meal decreases caloric intake at that meal by an average of 15%. Nuts One study found that a daily serving of nuts reduces risk of diabetes by 22% Studies show that replacing carbohydrates with nuts reduces the risk of developing heart disease by 30%

6 Vitamin D and Cancer Prevention (3 slides)

7 Vitamin D protects against lung cancer New study finds that lung cancer risk is reduced by 5% for every 10 point increase in blood levels of vitamin D On average, it takes about 600 IU (roughly) to raise blood vitamin D levels 10 points Researchers note that 88% of the world s population is vitamin D deficient Lung cancer is one of the most common and most dangerous forms of cancers more people die of lung cancer than colon, prostate and breast cancers combined

8 Vitamin D protects against other types of cancer Even low dose (400 IU) vitamin D supplementation was found to reduce early stage breast cancer by 18% In a small study on prostate cancer, 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily slowed or even reversed prostate cancer growth in over 60% of study participants 77% reduction in all cancer types in menopausal women One research review article states that 50,000 to 70,000 Americans die prematurely every year due to health problems related to vitamin D deficiency

9 Know Your Vitamin D Two forms of Vitamin D found in supplements Vitamin D2 ergocalciferol, the plant-based vitamin D Vitamin D3 cholecalciferol, the animal-based vitamin D and the form that is synthesized in the human body Most experts recommend D3 More natural form (form naturally found in the body) More potent More stable Binds to receptors more efficiently than D2 More effective at raising blood levels of vitamin D 5,000 IU daily is a typically suggested dose

A six month survey of 1,000 adults found a link between aggression and use of statin drugs Two statin drugs (Zocor and Pravachol) increased aggression in post-menopausal women, but reduced aggression in men Why? Theory: statin drugs not only reduce cholesterol, they have also been shown to reduce testosterone and change sleep patterns, which affects men and women differently The greater the increase in sleep problems, the more likely it was to see an increase in aggression; when testosterone levels went down (especially in men) aggression also went down
