2 INTRODUCTION Anaemia is a condition in which an inadequate number of red blood cells or an inadequate amount of hemoglobin impairs blood oxygen transport resulting in reduced physical and mental capacity. Hemoglobin is the red-pigmented protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the brain, muscular system, immune system, and other parts of the body. Iron, folic acid, and other vitamins and minerals (micronutrients) are required for the formation of hemoglobin. Nutrition deficiencies are the most common causes for anaemia and iron deficiency anaemia is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. In 2012, the World Health Assembly Resolution 65.6 endorsed Comprehensive implementation plan on maternal, infant and young child nutrition1, which specified six global nutrition targets for This policy brief covers the second target: a 50% reduction of anaemia in women of reproductive age. The purpose of this policy brief is to increase attention to, investment in, and action for a set of cost effective interventions and policies that can help Member States and their partners in reducing the rates of anaemia among women of reproductive age. Anaemia impairs health and well-being in women and increases the risk of maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes. Anaemia affects half a billion women of reproductive age worldwide. In 2011, 29% (496 million) of non-pregnant women and 38% (32.4 million) of pregnant women aged years were anaemic. The prevalence of anaemia was highest in south Asia and central and west Africa. At least half of this anaemia burden is assumed to be due to iron deficiency. Pregnant women require additional iron and folic acid to meet their own nutritional needs as well as those of the developing fetus. Deficiencies in iron and folic acid during pregnancy can potentially negatively impact the health of the mother, her pregnancy, as well as fetal development. Evidence has shown that the use of iron and folic acid supplements is associated with a reduced risk of iron deficiency and anaemia in pregnant women.

3 WHO recommendations Daily oral iron and folic acid supplementation with 30 mg to 60 mg of elemental iron* and 400 µg (0.4 mg) folic acid** is recommended for pregnant women to prevent maternal anaemia, puerperal sepsis, low birth weight, and preterm birth.*** *The equivalent of 60 mg of elemental iron is 300 mg ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, 180 mg ferrous fumarate or 500 mg of ferrous gluconate. ** Folic acid should be commenced as early as possible (ideally before conception) to prevent neural tube defects. *** This recommendation supercedes the previous recommendation found within the WHO guideline Daily iron and folic acid supplementation in pregnant women (2012).
