Lesson 1 Nutrition and Your Health What Is Nutrition? Nutrients The substances in food that promote normal growth, maintenance, and repair in your body are called nutrients. Nutrition Nutrition is the study of how our bodies use the food we eat to keep us healthy.
Lesson 1 Nutrition and Your Health How Your Body Uses Food Digestion is the process in which food is broken down into a form your body can use. Your body can make some nutrients. But most nutrients come from the foods you eat.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need The Six Essential Nutrients The nutrients that you get from food are called the essential nutrients. The six classes of essential nutrients are: 1. carbohydrates 2. fats 3. proteins 4. vitamins 5. minerals 6. water
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Carbohydrates A carbohydrate is a chemical composed of one or more simple sugars. Carbohydrates can be sugars or starches. Sugars are found in foods such as fruit, honey, table sugar, candy, and desserts. Starches are found in foods such as rice, pasta, and bread.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Proteins Proteins are nutrients that supply the body with energy for building, maintaining, and repairing tissues and cells. Proteins help the body break down and use nutrients for energy. Proteins are also the building blocks for muscles.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Fats Fats are nutrients that store energy and store some vitamins. Fats are used for many things in the body, including helping your body produce hormones.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Vitamins Vitamins are organic compounds that control many body functions. Vitamins help your body use the energy provided by other nutrients.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Minerals Minerals are elements that are essential for good health. Iron helps your blood transport oxygen through your body. Calcium is important for building and keeping strong bones. Sodium and potassium help regulate blood pressure.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Minerals and vitamins can be found in many kinds of foods.
Lesson 2 The Nutrients You Need Water Your body uses water to do many things including: 1. transport food and nutrients 2. keep your mouth and eyes moist 3. wash away waste products 4. regulate your body temperature
Lesson 3 Eating for Life The Food Guide Pyramid My Plate shows you which foods to eat and how much of each type of food you should eat every day.
Lesson 3 Eating for Life
Lesson 3 Eating for Life The Nutrition Facts Label The Nutrition Facts label is a label found on the outside packages of food and states: 1. the number of servings in the container 2. the number of Calories in each serving 3. the amount of nutrients in each serving
Lesson 3 Eating for Life
Lesson 3 Eating for Life Guidelines for Good Nutrition The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are a set of suggestions to help you develop a healthy lifestyle. Following the dietary guidelines will help you develop healthy eating habits.
Lesson 3 Eating for Life Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
