1 Dry Period The dry period is one of the most important stages of a dairy cow s lactation cycle. It gives the cow a chance to recover from the last lactation and lays the ground work for a successful future lactation. Proper dry cow feeding will reduce fresh cow problems such as ketosis, retained placentas and displaced abomasums. Renaissance Dry Cow Premixes are concentrated products designed to provide the nutrients dry cows need to prepare themselves for the next lactation. Medications: Rumensin : Increased milk production efficiency at a rate of 11 to 22 g/ton in a TMR or 11 to 400 g/ton to provide 115 to 410 mg/h/d in component fed herds of Monensin (registered trademark of Elanco TM ). Additives: Availa 4 : Co, Cu, Mn and Zn amino acid complex source (registered trademark of ZinPro Performance Minerals ). Animate : Anionic mineral supplement (registered trademark of Phibro Animal Health Corp. TM ). BioChlor : Rumen fermentation enhancer with palatable anion sources (registered trademark of Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition ). Celmanax TM : Refined Functional Carbohydrates TM derived from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (registered trademark of Arm & Hammer Animal Nutrition ) Levucell SC: Active dry yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (registered trademark of Lallemand Specialties). Mintrex Cu: Chelated Cu protected by HMTBa (methionine activity) (registered trademark of Novus ). Mintrex Mn: Chelated Mn protected by HMTBa (methionine activity) (registered trademark of Novus ). Mintrex Zn: Chelated Zn protected by HMTBa (methionine activity) (registered trademark of Novus ). MFP TM : Active dry methionine activity source (registered trademark of Novus ). NiaShure TM : Rumen-protected niacin (registered trademark of Balchem Animal Nutrition & Health TM ). NutroCAL TM : Glucose precursor leading to ketosis reduction (registered trademark of Kemin ). Selenium yeast additive with 2000 ppm of Se. Smartamine M: Rumen-protected methionine (registered trademark of Adisseo). Pre-Fresh Period The last 3 weeks of the dry period are vital to setting the stage for a successful lactation. Ongoing research of the mineral balance of the transition and early lactation cow has led to the development of products designed to improve the cow s calcium mobilization system. An active calcium mobilization system will reduce the occurrence of milk fever in early lactation cows. Poor calcium mobilization can also lead to retained placentas and displaced abomasums due to impaired immune and muscle function in the fresh cow. In order to improve calcium mobilization the transition cow diet may need to be anionic in nature. Begin feeding a Pre-Fresh ration 21 days before expected calving. Always make sure fresh, clean water is available at all times. Ingredients used in the transition ration should be similar to those fed in the early lactation period. To determine effectiveness of anionic pre-fresh program, regularly monitor urine ph. Target urine ph for cows consuming an anionic diet is for Holsteins and for Jerseys. Rev: Apr-17 CMW 1
2 Dry Cow Features High Levels of Vitamin E Dry cow premixes provide a high level of Vitamin E for improved reproductive performance and health. Research has shown a reduction in clinical mastitis of over 30% when cows are fed vitamin E at high levels in the dry period. Elevated levels of Vitamin E also increase the effectiveness of selenium provision and improve the quality of the colostrum. Mineral Levels Designed for Dry Cows Intense livestock production has altered the mineral content of forages. Most homegrown forages are high in potassium, which can cause milk fever in dry cows. Renaissance dry cow premixes contain no added potassium and high levels of magnesium to help complement dry cow forages. High Levels of Trace Minerals Including Selenium All Renaissance dry cow premixes feature high levels of highly available trace minerals to provide nutritional assurance for the upcoming lactation. A Complete Mineral Package Renaissance Dry Cow Premixes are designed to meet all mineral requirements of the dry cow. No additional products are needed to meet the cows needs; when fed as directed, dry cows will receive one ounce of salt per head per day to meet their needs. Mix with grains in a TMR or top dress.
