6 In 1997, EcoSMART scientists discovered The Octopamine Blocker, a unique mode of action that shuts down insects central nervous systems. Octopamine is the insects equivalent to adrenaline; it regulates their heart rate, movement, behavior and metabolism. 10 A growing number of consumers are aware of and concerned about the potential dangers of synthetic pesticides. According to the EPA, there are more than two million poisoning incidents reported each year, half involving children under six years old and 90% occurring in the home. Every 13 seconds, a call is placed to a poison control center due to an unintentional poisoning. Mounting scientific evidence has linked the use of synthetic pesticides to adverse human health conditions including birth defects, learning disabilities, asthma symptoms and various forms of cancer. At least 50 deaths have been attributed to exposure to pyrethroids, one of the most commonly used synthetic pesticide ingredients. Several Provincial and Municipal Governments in Canada including Quebec, Ontario and Vancouver have enacted laws restricting or banning the sale of synthetic pesticides for residential landscapes. 10

11 Recent EPA regulatory actions will further drive EcoSMART growth and make it more difficult for registered pesticides to operate in the natural/organic market segment. Ortho is reportedly discontinuing its ecosense product line. Proposed new rules regarding False or Misleading Pesticide Product Brand Names would prohibit the use of brand names that imply disallowed safety and environmental claims such as Safe, Safer, Natural, Eco and Earth Friendly. These proposed rules will only apply to registered pesticides, and not 25-b exempt products.
