In this study, 53 healthy, normal-weight men, aged 21 to 48, took 150 mg of ubiquinol per day. After two weeks, LDL cholesterol had declined 12.7 percent. Researchers said that small, dense particles of LDL those most likely to form unhealthy deposits on blood vessel walls declined the most. Plant stanols and sterols block cholesterol According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), plant stanols and sterols, or phytosterols, reduce chances of heart disease. Phytosterols, from plant-based oils, compete with cholesterol in the digestive tract, reducing the amount of cholesterol the body absorbs. Phytosterols tend to reduce LDL, the bad cholesterol, and maintain HDL, the good cholesterol. In this review, researchers analyzed 182 recent cholesterol-phytosterol studies and found stanols perform better than sterols. LDL cholesterol declined an average of 8 percent with sterols and 17 percent with stanols. As stanol doses increased, LDL cholesterol levels decreased, leading doctors to suggest that the FDA raise its current recommendation above 2 grams per day for plant stanols. Carnitine and CoQ10 reduce lipoprotein A People with kidney failure who are on hemodialysis often take statin drugs to control cholesterol but, according to doctors, statins don t always reduce lipoprotein A, a compound similar to LDL cholesterol that can clog arteries and increase inflammation. In this study, 52 men and women on hemodialysis and statin drugs added a daily dose of carnitine, CoQ10 alone or together or a placebo. Compared to the start of the study, lipoprotein A levels declined significantly in all three carnitine and CoQ10 groups, and also compared to placebo after three months. In this study, 40 people with the most common type of lung cancer (non-small cell), who were undergoing chemotherapy, took 2,200 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from fish oil per day, or no omega-3 supplements. After 10 weeks, the EPA group had lost an average of 1.6 pounds compared to 5 pounds for the non-epa group, and maintained muscle mass while the non- EPA group lost over 2 pounds of muscle. Doctors said that EPA slowed the loss of body weight, maintained muscle, and holds great promise for treating cancerrelated malnutrition. 3 Men s Health Everyday nutrients extend life in, and lower chances of, prostate cancer More vitamin K, less prostate cancer Doctors said prior prostate-cancer lab studies found vitamin K has anti-cancer properties. In this study, researchers measured vitamin K in the diets of 11,319 men who were free of cancer when they enrolled. After 10 years of follow-up, men who had consumed the most vitamin K2 were 42 percent less likely to have developed prostate cancer compared to men who got the least vitamin K2. Vitamin K, a powerful antioxidant, has two forms: K1 which comes primarily from plant sources and K2 from animal sources, such as aged cheeses. Selenium lowers chances of prostate cancer The body needs small amounts of selenium in the diet, which combines with proteins to form a powerful antioxidant enzyme. In this study, researchers measured blood levels of selenium in 248 men, aged 40 to 64, with prostate cancer, and 492 similar men without cancer. Doctors found a strong and direct link: for every 10 mcg increase of selenium per liter of blood (mcg/l), chances of prostate cancer declined 11 percent. Those with selenium levels from 87 to 95 mcg/l were 40 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer compared to men whose selenium levels fell below 78.9 mcg/l. Zinc and prostate Zinc helps repair DNA, maintain the immune system, and is more concentrated in prostate tissue than elsewhere in the body. In this study, researchers measured zinc in the diets of 525 men under age 80 with prostate cancer and followed up for six years. Men who consumed the most zinc were 36 percent less likely to have died from prostate cancer compared to men who got the least zinc. Reference: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition; 2011, Vol. 93, No. 3, Healthy Moms Healthy Babies Supplementing nutrients during pregnancy boosts infant health Mom s zinc improved children s nervous systems Doctors in this study wanted to see if mother s zinc levels affected the health of their children s nervous systems, and said that heart function is linked to nervous-system health. Researchers tested the heartbeat patterns in 165 children, at 4.5 years old, whose nutrient-deficient mothers had taken iron and folic acid with or without 25 mg of zinc per day while pregnant. Children whose moms had taken zinc had slower heart rate, and more balanced and controlled heart responses at rest and under stress than children whose moms hadn t taken zinc. Multivitamins increase birth weight In the U.S., African-American women deliver preterm and low-birthweight babies two to three times more often than Caucasian women. Low birth weight is linked to poor mental and physical health later in life. Researchers measured multivitamins in the diets of 2,464 non-hispanic white and black mothers from just before and during early pregnancy and found that, while there was no effect in babies of white women, babies born to black women who had taken multivitamins were more than a pound heavier on average than babies whose moms hadn t taken multivitamins. 5 Sharper Minds, Better Memory Nutrients have surprising brain benefits for vegetarians, and improve memory in others Creatine improves brain function Previous creatine studies have focused on sports performance but doctors said that prior studies also suggest creatine influences cognitive function by increasing oxygenated blood to the brain. In this preliminary study, doctors wanted to test the effect of creatine on brain function and gave 121 young women, both vegetarian and omnivorous, 20 grams of creatine monohydrate per day, or a placebo. After five days, compared to placebo, vegetarians who had taken creatine saw memory scores improve by 40 percent, and both vegetarians and omnivores in the creatine group had more consistent responses to a task requiring rapid choices. Phosphatidylserine and omega-3 improve memory In this small pilot study, eight people complaining of memory problems took 300 mg of phosphatidyl-serine (PS) with 37.5 mg of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA/DHA) per day. To enter the study, participants could not be taking any medications or other supplements, did not have allergy to soy or fish, and were able to complete a basic cognitive test. At the start of the study and after six weeks, researchers tested power and length of attention, and quality and speed of working memory; the type people need for holding and recalling information to solve problems, even through distractions or interference. After taking PS-DHA for six weeks, participants were able to store, hold, and recall information better overall, and were able to recall 42 percent more words on a list after a time delay. Reference: British Journal of Nutrition; 2011, Vol. 105, No. 7, July s Nutrient Focus Vitamin D The latest scientific findings Vitamin D, blood sugar and insulin Doctors in this study measured blood sugar and insulin levels in 85 obese and non-obese Philadelphia children, aged 4 to 18, and found nearly half were low or deficient in vitamin D. Older African-American children with higher body-mass index scores had the lowest levels of vitamin D. As vitamin D levels rose, blood sugar levels and insulin resistance decreased, reducing chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Vitamin D3 more effective than D2 for treating deficiency Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, has two major forms; D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Since vertebrates synthesize vitamin D3 from sunshine, researchers wanted to test for any biological differences between vitamin D2 and D3 once inside the body. In the study, 33 healthy adults took 50,000 IU of vitamin D2 or D3 per week. After 12 weeks, blood serum levels of the active form of vitamin D (calcitriol) were 70 percent higher in the vitamin D3 group than in the vitamin D2 group. The vitamin D3 group also had two to three times the amount of stored vitamin D. Study authors said that most North American pharmaceutical preparations use vitamin D2, and recommend switching to vitamin D3 for its greater potency and lower cost.
