12 Exclusion criteria - patients Pre-existing contraindication to either PN or EN Received PN/EN within the last 7 days PEG, PEJ, needle/surgical jejunostomy in situ Known to be pregnant Admitted for thermal injury (burns) Admitted for palliative care Been in a critical care unit for >36 hours Previously randomised into CALORIES Expected stay in UK less than 6 months
