Breeders in Belgium. Management of the DanAvl sow. DVM Swinespecialist, Pia Conradsen Denmark
Today we are 9 swine vets (4 owners) and 3 secretaries Contract with approximately 600 farms in Denmark, Russia, Ukraine, Polen, Germany etc visits per farm every year Svinevet
I am also a farmers wife! 1200 YL-sows Full line production kg farm are in Germany 500 mother sheep
We believe in good education!
Average production data, the first 6 months of herds, average 607 sows Piglets per sow/year 31.8 Weaned pr litter 14,0 Live born 16,0 Piglet mortality, per cent 12.7 Farrowing percentage 88.0 Lactation days 32
Highest 25 percent. Production data. The first 6 of months of herds, average 556 sows Piglets per sow and year 34,2 Weaned per litter 14,8 Live born 16,7 Piglet mortality, per cent 10,8 Farrowing percentage 91,0 Lactation days 31
Weaned pr sow 12,4 Weaned incl. Nursing sow 15,4
Finisher Average data / best 25 % Daily gain gram pr day 916 gram pr day Feed conversion kg feed / ADG 2,55 kg feed / kg Dead 3.7 % Daily gain, gram pr day 973 gram pr day Feed conversion kg feed / ADG 2.49 kg feed / kg Dead 2.8 %
Success starts at birth
Succes in the farrowing unit As many piglets as possible As heavy as possible As healthy as possible
Feeding The last 4 weeks before farrowing 3,7 Kg feed pr day The last 2 days before expected farrowing 2,12 kg feed pr day for Gilts 2,65 kg feed pr day for sows.
Feeding Day 6 after farrowing 5,30 kg pr day Day 14 after farrowing Minimum 8,40 kg pr day for sows Minimum 7,40 kg pr day for gilts.
Succes in the farrowing unit The sow have to take good care of the piglets no need for extra milk supply. Only a healthy sow can do the good job for us.
Helping the sow Both too little and too much help is wrong 2 hours between the first 4 piglets 1 hour between the next piglets Hygiene! Clean gloves
Helping the sow Less deadborn Less weak piglets Less sows with complications and metritis healthy sow Move weak piglets to the breast Move cold piglets to the lamp
Newborn piglets Nothing is more important than: Heat Colostrum
Hunger and cold! 40 % of the piglets die with in the first 2 days 60 % of the piglets die with in the first 4 days They die of hunger and cold! And NOT to the lack of antibiotics!!

Temperature: C for the piglets In the room at farrowing: 24 C with full drained floor 22 C with concrete floor
Pigs that freezes
Temperature White bulb with 100 watt fore normal pigs Red bulb with 150 Watt fore the smallest piglets and in wintertime
Colostrum to all pigs
Colostrum for everyone! Colostrum is available at all times during and for up to 6 hours after farrowing. After ended farrowing the sow gives milk once every hour.
Colostrum to all pigs All the newborn pigs are trapped in the corner during the first feeding of the sow. When the sows lay down again, the 10 smallest piglets in the litter, are move to the sow in 1-1½ hour, to be sure they become enough colostrum.
Colostrum to all pigs The biggest piglets in the litter can be moved after 6 hours. Small piglets can be moved to a nursing sow after 12 hours
Immunity Ig mg/ml IgA IgM IgG Antibodies decreases dramatically within the first 24 hours 0 t 6 t 12 t 18 t 1 d 2 d 3 d 5 d 7 d 14 d 21 d 28 d 35 d 42 d Laktationsstadie timer/dage
Immunity Antibodies are LARGE molecules! Openings in the intestine makes antibodies from colostrum to pass through the intestinal wall and directly into the bloodstream hours after birth these openings closes Gut closure is affected by any kind of food (colostrum, milk replacer, Dialyt, A38, water...)
14 piglets to the sow 12 piglets to the sow with the smallest piglets
Newborn piglets are counted
Teats are counted at sows that just farrowed
14 piglets to the sow As many as possibly by own mother Old sows need big piglets at the breast Gilts must never have the smallest piglets. Smallest piglets goes to a 2. or 3. time sow or a Gilts with big nippels.
Never leave at sow over the night with more than 15 piglets!
5-7 days old piglets 21 days old piglets
Nursing sow - 21 days weaned pigs, comb with fine figure and fine piglets (1.litter)
5 to 8 days old piglets are moved to weaned sow - sow with fine figures, fine piglets, no medical history (2. litter sow)
Biggest pigs with full stomachs are collected
Large, Vital newborn piglets are driven to middle nurse"
Daily surveillance The piglets - Disturb as little as possible, but see all the pigs daily Sow - Eating, drinking, rises readily, lie quiet, care for the pigs, efficient udder
Identical behavior - all pigs at the udder or in the cave simultaneously
Clip System
Yellow clip = Small, hungry pig After 8 yellow clips are set up, it's time to make a nursing-sow.
Pink clip = Sick sow Sick sow often leads to hungry piglets (= yellow clip)
Green clip = Sick Pig Sick pigs should be treated immediately
Clips provide quick overview
Hungry piglets in litter older than 2-3 days 1. Put 8 clips in your pocket 2. Find the bad pigs on your way around the farrowing house 3. Put a clip on the sow card 4. When you have used all clips, you need to make a nursing-sow - you can always find 3-4 extra piglets 5. Move pigs to a newly farrowed sow or someone who has farrowed 1 week ago (middle nurse) (See two-stage model again).
Hungry pigs marked for observation and possible collection
Feel if the stomach is full, only move hungry pigs
Collecting / Nursing sow Svage grise samles hos opsamlingssoen Fravænnede grise Opsamlingsso So med mindst 21 dages diegivning Opsamlingssoens grise flyttes til en sektioneret smågrisestald Søer med enkelte svage grise Opsamlingsgrise
Nursing sows - disadvantages Moving a functioning pig more than 48 hours after birth will reduce its weaning weight by 0.9 kg. Add 1 extra pig to an already intact litter will reduce weaning weight for each pig with 140 g due to the disordered ranking among the pigs and lactation Disturbed colostrum intake can increase the pig's risk of disease and death
Only move hungry pigs, never sick pigs! Later than 48 hours after farrowing
Weaning more pig with milk suppley? Milk cups; do not make mirakels! Help good farms to be better. Typical 0,2-0,4 pigs more pr pen. Around 400 gram more in weaning weight. The farm with best results do not use milkcups.
Weaning more pig with milk suppley? Milk supply in a trough can be a good help. Give for all piglets from 24 hours after births until the piglets stops drinking the milk around day 4-7.
Weaning, wean all pigs! Wean all pigs with same age the same day. Small and bad pigs must also be weaned!
Weaning, wean all pigs! Same results for the pigs! The pigs have same weight one week after if you wean them, if you take good care of them in the weaner section. Versus collect them to a nursing sow, Less spread of bacteria and virus in the farrowing unit. Less problems with heat for the sow.
High weaning weight at day 24 1 pig extra pr pen at weaning = minus 140 gram pr pig. Pigs from a gilt = minus 200 gram pr pig 25 lactation days versus 24 = plus 200 gram pr pig 1 pig moved to the litter after day 2 = minus 150 gram pr pig
High weaning weight at day 24 Sow is up and stand 5 times a day = gram pr day pr pig. Feeding the piglets with dry feed before weaning = gram pr pig form day 10-14
Feeding - water Sows - Remember water is the most important and least expensive feed material - Nozzle control every time that you insert new animals in a pen - Checking the volume of 4 liters per minute 3 L of water to 1 L of milk => L water daily
Sow feed Traditional Wheat, barley, oats, soya, vitamin and minerals Today Focus on optimal production of colostrum Dietary fibers
Can we chance the sowmilk? When the standards are respected Sugar no effect Starch no effect Protein no positive effect Fat yes, with some kind of fat: Coconutolie, octanoic acid, fish olie
Sow feed, colostrum Colostrum production: The production of Colostrum happens the last week before farrowing High content of fibers gives a high production of short chain and mediumlength fatty acids, which stimulate a high production of colostrum
Sow feed, Colostrum Beet pulp Sunflowers Chicory fiber Coconut olie Linseed linolenic acid Omega 3 fatty acid
Sow feed High content of digestible fibers: Less deadborn piglets Less Metritis Better colostrum production Lower piglets mortality Lower sow mortality
What are the difference betweeen good and bad farms? There are no secretes! You can not buy success in a bag!! No miracles! Only good management and good strategies.
Succes? Control of virus diseases and mycoplasma! Minimum of stress Temperature, ventilation Overcrowding Good feed mixes to match the pigs needs and age
Good management..
Thank you for your attention
