Revitalize Dry Cow Reference Guide
What Is Revitalize? It is a dry cow feed and mineral line formulated specifically for dry cows. It prepares the cow for the next lactation and helps reduce metabolic and nutritionally related disorders around the time of calving. Dry Cow Feeding Concepts Incorporated Into the Revitalize Product Line Revitalize products have been formulated to allow producers to provide excellent nutrition to their dry cows without overfeeding energy. Controlled energy feeding for dry cows > Several university studies have shown that controlling the energy intake of dry cows throughout the dry period at or slightly above the energy requirement established by the National Research Council improves their transition into lactation. 2 Revitalize is a trademark of Southern States Cooperative, Incorporated.
Revitalize products are formulated to accommodate both single and multiple group dry cow programs. Management based grouping of cows > Producers have often been encouraged to manage dry cows with separate far-off and close-up groups. Current research studies have demonstrated that single group dry cow programs can work. Several Revitalize products contain supplemental anions to facilitate achieving a negative cation anion balance in a close-up dry cow diet. Managing cation anion balance > Regulating the cation anion balance to close-up dry cows can help reduce the incidence and severity of milk fever, improve reproduction, decrease incidences of retained placenta and ketosis, and enhance milk production during the subsequent lactation. 3
Several Research Proven Products have been incorporated into the Revitalize Product Line Sel-Plex selenium yeast > Selenium yeast may decrease milk somatic cell count (Table 1) indicating better mammary gland health and increase the selenium content of colostrum (Figure 1), thereby increasing the delivery of selenium to the newborn calf. Table 1: Sel-Plex Selenium Yeast Effects on Milk Somatic Cell Count Pre Sel-Plex Post Sel-Plex Number of Cows Milk Yield, lbs Fat, % Avg SCC, cells/ml 305, ,676 Harrison and Elliot, 2005 Figure 1: Sel-Plex Selenium Yeast Higher Selenium Content in Colostrum Se, ppm mg/d, selenite 8.7 mg/d, selenite 4.8 mg/d, Sel-Plex Awadeh et al., Sel-Plex is a registered trademark of Alltech, Incorporated.
Zinpro Performance Minerals > Zinpro Performance Minerals (ZPM) decrease somatic cell count when fed throughout the lactation cycle (Figure 2). Figure 2: Zinpro Performance Minerals 14 Study Summary of Effects of Feeding ZPM Beginning in the Dry Period and Continuing Through Lactation Milk Somatic Cell Count 1000s/mL Control > Zinpro Performance Mineral study results have shown improved reproductive parameters in dairy cattle when fed during the transition period. Results include: Decreased days to first estrus (University of Tennessee; Spruce Haven Farm and Research Center) 38.5% decrease in CIDR usage (New Zealand Riverside Vet Service) Decreased days to first ovulation for cows with transition disorders (University of Pennsylvania) 41.9% decrease in days open (Miner Institute) Decreased retained placentas (University of Tennessee) 17.7% decrease in days to first luteal activity (University of Tennessee) 198 Complexed Trace Minerals Zinpro is a trademark of Zinpro. 5

Biotin > Supplemental biotin increased milk production 2.8 lb/hd/d and dry matter intake 1.5 lb/hd/d across nine studies. > Supplementing biotin during the transition period decreased plasma Non-Esterified Fatty Acids (NEFA) (Figure 5), suggesting improved energy metabolism and decreased risk for ketosis. Figure 5: Biotin Plasma NEFA Concentrations of Cows Fed 0 or 20 and 30 mg/d of Supplemental Biotin/d *** Control NEFA, ueq/ml Biotin ** Week Relative to Calving Rosendo et al.,
