Private healthcare is right for you if you do not want to wait for your procedure or if you want to schedule treatment for when you are ready. With a dedicated fast-track service our private patients can enjoy appointment times to suit them and are guaranteed to see their consultant at their specified time. It is even possible to arrange surgery within two weeks of your initial consultation if you need it and you are fit and well. Private patients can expect us to pay attention to the smallest details, which can make the world of difference to your treatment experience and your recovery. Insured patients If you have private medical insurance and want to choose The McIndoe Centre, check with your insurer that you are covered for the treatment required, including outpatient appointments. We are recognised by the majority of medical insurance companies. Self pay patients You can opt to pay for your procedure yourself following an initial consultation. You will receive a tailored, inclusive price for treatment based on your condition. Initial consultation and pre-op diagnostics are not included in the treatment package price. 5

6 YOUR JOURNEY Choosing your consultant and getting referred Your first step should be to visit your GP and ask to be referred to The McIndoe Centre. Inform your GP that you would like to go through your private health insurer or that you will be paying for the procedure yourself. Your GP can then write an open referral letter which will advise on the treatment you require. You can request a specific consultant if you wish or your GP may suggest a particular consultant, in which case this will be a direct referral letter. You will be able to read their profiles and research their specialist areas to help you make an informed decision. Contact us on to book an appointment with the consultant of your choice at a time that is convenient to you. If going through your insurer you will need to obtain the relevant authorisation number for treatment. You will need to quote your authorisation number when booking your appointment. Please note, you will need to contact your insurance provider prior to any treatment to ensure you have the relevant cover and to check if there are any limitations to the treatment you can have, as some costs may not be covered. Please visit for full terms and conditions. Initial consultation Before your treatment you will need a one-to-one consultation with the surgeon of your choice. This is also the opportunity to discuss any pre-existing medical conditions that you may have. It is a good idea to make a note of the questions you would like to ask and bring them with you to your consultation. Please ensure that you organise transport to and from the hospital. 6

7 Diagnostic tests If necessary you will have a diagnostic investigation that could include an X-ray, MRI or ultrasound. This will help to determine the most appropriate treatment. We can provide diagnostic services to patients aged 12 years and over. Some image guided therapeutic procedures are provided to patients 18 years and over. Pre-assessment This is a health-check to ensure that you can safely have the operation. Depending on your health status and the type of operation, there will be some tests which may include infection control swabs and blood pressure measurement. Treatment letter At this stage you will receive a treatment letter which will outline your treatment package, the fixed cost of your procedure and the method of payment. This will also detail how your consultant and anaesthetist will collect their fees. With zero waiting lists, we can arrange an appointment at a convenient time to suit you. When you leave Our comprehensive after-care plan ensures that you are cared for in any eventuality. In the first instance you will be sent home with prescribed medication from your consultant lasting up to two weeks to make your recovery as easy as possible. You will then have a one-to-one consultation with your consultant to make sure that your recovery is progressing as expected. Post-operative physiotherapy within 120 days of your procedure is also included to ensure the best possible recovery. 7

8 TREATMENTS Arthroscopy An arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) allows your surgeon to see inside your joints using a camera inserted through small cuts on your skin. Your surgeon can diagnose problems such as torn cartilage, ligament damage and arthritis without the need for a large cut to your skin. The aim is to confirm exactly what the problem is and for many people the problem can be treated at the same time. Your surgeon is able to wash out any loose material caused by wear of the joint surfaces and can trim or repair a torn cartilage if necessary. You should be able to go home the same day. It is common for your joint to be a little swollen for a few weeks and movement can be uncomfortable but regular exercise should help you to return to normal activities sooner. Achilles tendon rupture reconstruction An Achilles tendon rupture occurs when you have a complete tear through the tissue connecting the calf muscle and heel bone. The Achilles tendon can grow weak with age and lack of use. Reconstructive surgery may be necessary, the surgeon makes an incision down the back of the calf. The ends of the tendon are then sewn back together with sutures (surgical stitches). Surgery lasts around 30 minutes to one hour and rehabilitation can last 6-9 months. Bunion treatment A bunion is a bony lump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe. The most common cause of bunions is footwear that does not have enough width to fit the toes in their natural position. If your bunion is causing severe and significant pain it can be treated with surgery. The operation takes around 30 minutes to an hour and involves removing the bunion, releasing or tightening ligaments, realigning the big toe, stiffening the joint and straightening the smaller toes. You should be able to go home the same day or the day after surgery. Carpal tunnel release The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway that connects the forearm and the hand. It contains several tendons that allow you to bend your fingers but also surrounds 8

9 the median nerve that travels through the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs if the tendons swell or degenerate putting pressure on the median nerve, thus resulting in pain. Carpel tunnel release surgery involves making a small cut on the palm of your hand. The surgeon will then cut the roof of the carpel tunnel (carpal ligament) to reduce pressure on the median nerve. The operation will take about 20 minutes and can be performed under local anaesthetic. You are then able to go home the same day. Dupuytren s disease Dupuytren s disease is a condition where scar-like tissue forms just beneath the skin of your fingers and the palm of your hand. Over time, this fibrous tissue can contract and force one or more fingers to curl up into the palm. This is known as Dupuytren s contracture. There are several options to treat this condition. Non surgical options include injecting Botox or collagenase into the bands of tissue. Alternatively, another option during the early stages of the condition is a needle aponeurotomy. This involves cutting the contracted cord of tissue using a needle. For more severe cases surgery can range from cutting the fibrous bands in the palm of the hand (open fasciectomy) to removing the thickened connective tissue (fasciectomy). Epidural injection for pain relief An epidural injection involves injecting local anaesthetics and other painkillers into an area called the epidural space, near your spinal cord. This numbs your nerves to give pain relief. The epidural can be inserted at different levels of your back depending on the area of the body that requires pain relief. As well as being used during and after surgery epidural injections are used to treat back or leg pain caused by sciatica or a slipped (prolapsed) disc. This form of treatment can provide pain relief for up to a year. Frozen shoulder Frozen shoulder is caused by tissue surrounding the shoulder joint becoming inflamed and thickened that can lead to pain and stiffness. The symptoms can gradually get worse over many months until they prevent you from carrying out everyday tasks 9

10 and even lose the ability to move your arm. Treatment options include painkillers, physiotherapy and/or corticosteroid injections. If surgery is necessary this will usually be an arthroscopic or keyhole procedure called a capsular release. The thickened tissue is removed to enable movement and reduce pain. Exercises following surgery help with rehabilitation and restore the full range of motion. This should take between 4-6 weeks. Joint replacement A joint replacement may be necessary if it becomes worn or damaged to the extent that there is pain whilst resting and/or it is preventing you from being mobile. The most common cause is osteoarthritis, where there is a gradual wear and tear of the joint. Cartilage covering the surface of the joint wears away and the bone underneath becomes damaged. The most frequently performed joint replacements are for hips and knees. Joint replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged joint with an artificial one made of metal, plastic or ceramic, or a combination of these materials. The surgeon removes the damaged joint surfaces and your replacement is fixed to the bone using acrylic cement or special coatings that bond directly to the bone. You should be able to go home after two or three days and you will need to use crutches for a few weeks. Regular exercise and post-operative physiotherapy exercises will help you return to normal activities sooner. Knee ligament reconstruction A knee ligament reconstruction involves a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It is also known as an ACL reconstruction. Knee ligament injuries can occur during sports such as skiing, football, rugby, tennis and squash where there are sudden changes in direction. This can put strain on the ligament and potentially cause a tear. The operation usually takes an hour to 90 minutes. Most surgeons perform an arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) using a camera to see inside your knee. Your ACL is replaced with a piece of suitable tissue from another area of your body. Having surgery can depend on how active you are and the extent this damage is affecting your quality of life. You should go home the same day or the day after surgery. Once your knee has settled down you will need to start intensive physiotherapy treatment, which may continue for as long as six months. It may be up to a year before you are able to return to full training for your sport. 10

11 Rotator cuff surgery The rotator cuff is formed from four muscles and tendons that attach your arm to the top of your shoulder blade. Impingement (see below) or a tear are the most common types of damage done to this part of the upper limb. If surgery is required this is usually performed under general anaesthetic and can take around 45 minutes to one hour. Impingement is usually treated by having arthroscopic surgery (keyhole surgery). Your surgeon will remove any thickened tissue, release any tight tissue and shave off some bone. Surgery to repair rotator cuff tears could involve either keyhole or open surgery. It can take up to a year to get back enough strength in your shoulder to return to normal activities. Although regular exercise should help you return to normal activities as soon as possible. Shoulder impingement Shoulder pain can be caused by tendons inside your shoulder catching on nearby tissue or bone as you lift your arm, this is known as shoulder impingement. As well as causing pain this can contribute to weakness in your arm. If it is preventing you from carrying out everyday activities then it may be advisable to seek medical help. It is possible to treat shoulder impingement with physiotherapy and by strengthening muscles. Steroid injections can help relieve pain if physiotherapy and exercises alone are not working. Subacromial decompression is a surgical option that involves widening the space around the tendon so that it does not rub or catch on any other bone or tissue. The operation is usually an arthroscopic (keyhole) procedure and done under general anaesthetic. You should be able to go home the same day or the day after surgery and have normal function in your shoulder after a few weeks. Spinal injection Each of the vertebrae in your spine has a set of facet joints that stabilise your back and help make it flexible. Injections into the facet joints can help to diagnose and occasionally treat neck and back pain. The injection is comprised of steroids that help reduce swelling and inflammation and anaesthetic that numbs the pain. The localised injection also allows for diagnosis of the source of your pain and can determine whether it is originating from your facet joints. Your injection may coincide with an X-ray to help guide the needle to the right spot. You will usually have a spinal injection in conjunction with other treatments and you will be able to go home the same day. 11
