2 Self-Drilling Schanz Screws The self-drilling Schanz screw has been specifically designed to optimize the bone/pin interface to reduce the occurrence of pin tract related complications in external fixation. Efficient drill bit and tap One-step power insertion Precise pilot hole and threads Reduced heat generation Decreased insertion torque Short, 2% core taper provides optimal radial preload Reduces micromotion and pin tract problems Standard, symmetrical thread profile Improved pullout strength in diaphyseal and metaphyseal bone Smooth thread/shaft transition area* Reduced stress riser Standard shaft diameters Fully compatible with AO large, medium and small external fixators Available in implant quality 316L stainless steel or commercially pure (CP) titanium * The 4.0 mm/2.5 mm and 4.0 mm/3.0 mm Schanz screws do not have a thread/shaft transition area. Self-Drilling Schanz Screws

3 The unique design of the self-drilling Schanz screw provides reduced heat generation and insertion torque while improving pullout resistance in cortical and cancellous bone. Standard vs Self-Drilling Schanz Screws* Temperature Increase (C) Insertion Torque (Nm x 10-1 ) Cortical Pullout (N x 10 2 ) Cancellous Pullout (N x 10 2 ) Standard 5.0 mm Schanz screw (predrilled then inserted at 60 rpm) 5.0 mm self-drilling Schanz screw (inserted at 400 rpm) * Internal testing on file at. Bench test results may not necessarily be indicative of clinical performance.

4 Technique Basic Technique Make a stab incision and pass a protection sleeve with trocar to the near cortex. Dimple the cortex and remove the trocar. Irrigate to minimize heat generation and insert the screw with the power drive. Use the image intensifier to verify screw depth during insertion. Remove the power drive and protection sleeve. The thread/shaft transition area should not contact the near cortex. Diaphyseal Application Metaphyseal Application Alternative Technique Use the power drive to insert the screw through near cortex only. Remove the drill, place the universal chuck with T-handle on the screw and complete insertion by hand. Note: The basic insertion technique requires the tip to be embedded in the far cortex to resist cantilever forces. It is not necessary for the tip to penetrate through the far cortex. However, if the surgeon feels it is needed, as in osteopenic bone, the screw may be inserted so that it protrudes slightly through the far cortex. Self-Drilling Schanz Screws
