MARS Research Presentation By Bradley Central High School Physics Dr. Buckner 4 th Period Cleveland, TN
Introduc*on Is there a connec*on between loca*on and size of a fracture? Is there a correla*on between length and depth? Is there a correla*on of dimension between fractures located near craters and fractures located near volcanoes? Is there a correla*on of dimension between fractures at different al*tudes?
Hypothesis There is a correla*on between loca*on and size of a fracture. The longer a fracture the deeper the fracture The shorter a fracture the more shallow the fracture. The dimensions of fractures located near craters and fractures located near volcanoes are the same. The dimensions of fractures at different al*tudes are the same.
Why is this ques*on interes*ng or important? If a paaern emerges, it will be easier to predict the size of fractures in correla*on with craters. If a paaern emerges, it will be easier to predict the size of fractures in correla*on with volcanoes.
BACKGROUND
List Defini*ons Fractures- a division, split, or breach on the surface. Al*tude- the angular distance of a celes*al body from the horizon measured along the ver*cal circle passing through the body. Depth- the extent, measurement, or distance downwards, backwards, or inwards. Dimension- any one of the three physical or spa*al proper*es of length, area, and volume.
Defini*ons con*nued Craters- a circular or almost circular area having a depressed floor, almost always containing a central mountain and usually completely enclosed by walls that are omen higher than those of a walled plain; ring forma*on; ring. Volcanoes- a mountain or hill, usually having a cuplike crater at the summit, formed around such a vent from the ash and lava expelled through it

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE Rock Fractures on Mars Reveal Paths of Ancient Groundwater. Some fractures are estimated to be 500 meters deep. Some fractures can even be found inside of craters. Fractures are sometimes called columnar joints.
Fractures on Earth Fractures develop when the applied stress exceeds a rock's elas*c limit. Regional stresses in plate interiors responsible for fracturing and faul*ng may represent far- field effects of tectonic forces ac*ng on plate margins. hap:// fractures- reference/faults- fractures
Experimental Design Use the THEMIS camera system from the Mars Odyssey SpacecraM. Visible Imagine System Focusing on Fractures and loca*on of fractures to determine if there is any rela*on in their sizes. Use 50 images
Experimental design Use JMARS Program Explore each image Image ID La*tude Longitude Size of Fracture Record Measurements Length Depth Width Loca*on Note any addi*onal informa*on of interest

Poten*al Map MOLA map which will be ploaed with fractures we use
Conclusion We hope to find support to see if there is a correla*on between loca*on and size of a fracture. To see if the length of the fracture has any correla*on to the depth of the fracture To see if the dimensions of fractures located near craters have any correla*on to fractures located near volcanoes. To see if the dimensions of fractures at different al*tudes are the same.
