2 A Message from the President of AO North America As President of AO North America, I would like to share with you the overall mission of our organization and specifically our focus on education. Since 1958, the AO has been the worldwide leader in musculoskeletal trauma education for disorders and trauma of the musculoskeletal system. AONA, established as a regional entity of the AO Foundation in 1992, continues the long tradition of teaching excellence. As an independent, surgeon-driven, nonprofit specialty society, AONA is dedicated to the advancement of patient care in orthopaedic, hand, craniomaxillofacial, spine, veterinary and podiatric surgery. Our mission is to improve the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and their sequalae in North America through education and research in the principles practice, and results of treatment. AONA offers a spectrum of educational activities beginning with residents, and then progresses to the practicing surgeon. AONA allows the surgeon to be a lifelong learner by offering modern teaching techniques and state-ofthe-art courses that are tailored for today s learner. Our educational activities include annual courses, symposia and regional summits and workshops targeted to practicing surgeons and residents specializing in the management of musculoskeletal injuries. As evidenced by AO North America s Systematic Education approach, course offerings begin with the basic principles and techniques and move to addressing complex care in a variety of educational sessions. Specialty courses are intensive and focus on skeletal fixation of specific anatomical areas. Each educational offering has its own unique structure encompassing a mix of didactic sessions, hands-on laboratory experience (some with cadaver specimens), small group discussions, expert panels and live surgery transmissions, depending on the objectives and content of the program presented. AO North America is recognized for the excellent surgical education it provides. Attendance at an AO North America educational activity can be both valuable and beneficial as you strive to improve patient care throughout your career. Sincerely, John H. Wilber, MD President, AO North America 2 AO North America 2011 Course Schedule

10 A Message from the Chairman of AOSpine North America As Chairman of the AOSpine North America Board, I welcome your participation in AOSpine Educational courses and symposia. AOSpine was organized to allow spine surgeons the opportunity to address their unique and specific needs that are not part of the traditional AO umbrella. SPINE Historically, the spine group was organized in 2003, through a process that culminated in the development of a template of governance of the AOSpine specialty. Now known as AOSpine International, this organization has an increased measure of autonomy while continuing to be part of the AO Foundation. AOSpine International (AOSI) is led by a board chaired by Luiz Vialle, MD, of Curitiba, Brazil, and oversees coordinated international research efforts, spine instructional courses, and internationally based educational programs such as live surgery seminars and traveling fellowships. AOSI is regionally represented by North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. AOSpine North America is partnered with AO North America for educational support and direction, thanks to a well established Continuing Medical Education process and common commitment to the AO principles and the AO family in North America. This commitment to the educational process by AOSpine North America ensures presentation to its members the latest cutting edge technology and techniques as related to spinal disease management. AOSpine North America is a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to advance the practice of spine care and improve patient outcomes. AOSpine North America will work to accomplish this goal by adhering to the main foundations of the AO Foundation philosophy: education, research, and documentation. Our objective is to work in collaboration with spine surgeons, related medical practitioners, scientist, professional societies, and industrial partners in a non-commercial environment to encourage new ideas and initiatives to improve patient care. The AOSpine North America Board is highly energized to advance these objectives. Sincerely Jens R. Chapman MD Chairman, AOSpine North America 8 AO North America 2011 Course Schedule

15 About AO North America Since 1958, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen (AO) has been the leader in musculoskeletal trauma education for disorders and trauma of the musculoskeletal system. AO North America (AONA) was founded in 1992 to address the specific regional needs of North America, the AO s largest and fasted growing region. Today, AONA continues that long tradition of teaching excellence, and is proud to offer CME activities for multiple specialities involved in the care of the musculoskeletal system. The prime activity of AONA is to support and develop graduate and post graduate education within the fields of orthopaedics, craniomaxillofacial, spine, hand, veterinary, and podiatric surgical specialties. The four (4) guiding principles of fracture fixation serve as the core curriculum for all AONA educational activities: anatomic reduction of the fracture fragments, particularly in joint fractures; stable fixation to ensure proper healing of the fracture while it allows the surrounding tissue to move and strengthen; atraumatic surgical technique to preserve the blood supply to the bone fragments and soft tissue; and early, pain-free mobilization so that the patient can be returned to function as soon as possible. Since it s inception, AONA has educated nearly 25,000 orthopaedic, hand, craniomaxillofacial, and spine residents and surgeons as well as veterinary and podiatric surgeons on the AO principles. AONA has an outstanding reputation for setting the standard for excellence in educational endeavors and has been recognized as a pioneer in practical continuing surgical education. In addition to the multiple educational offerings it develops and supports every year, AONA also provides opportunities for scientific research, academic fellowships, preceptorships and resident education. Though the mission of AONA has remained the same, (to improve patient care and outcomes of musculoskeletal injuries through research, documentation and education), the scope and structure of AONA has changed. From its inception as a small regional branch of the AO, it has grown and developed into a unique and independent specialty society.
