OSU Department of Plastic Surgery Michael J. Miller, MD Professor and Chair 915 Olentangy River Road Suite 2100 Columbus, OH Phone Fax Department of Plastic Surgery name change proposal summary 1. Change Department of Plastic Surgery to Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to better reflect the Department s mission 2. In our current culture, plastic surgery and cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery are inaccurately thought of as the same: a. Plastic surgery o Broader than cosmetic surgery o Includes reconstruction of facial and body defects due to cancer, degeneration, birth disorders, trauma, burns and disease o Corrects dysfunctional areas of the body and is reconstructive in nature b. Cosmetic surgery o Narrowly focused on enhancing a patient s appearance o Key goals are improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry and proportion as well as emotional well-being. 3. While aesthetic surgery is an essential part of the clinical, educational and research services performed by our surgeons, our major focus is reconstructive surgery. 4. Approximately half of academic departments in the U.S. have changed their name to Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 5. The preeminent journal for our specialty is the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 6. There are no other units at Ohio State with this name 7. No changes to degree titles or Course Offering Bulletin listings are required (our department does not offer an undergraduate major or graduate program) 8. Name change was discussed on 3/31/17 at the Department of Plastic Surgery Faculty meeting a. There are 19 faculty in the Department b. 14 faculty were present and voted unanimously to adopt the name change 5/17/17 trm
Department of Plastic Surgery Proposed Name Change Michael J. Miller, M.D. Professor of Plastic Surgery Chair, Department of Plastic Surgery The Ohio State University Columbus, Ohio

Proposal We are requesting to change our name From: Department of Plastic Surgery To: Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Why do that? I liked the old name 4
Rationale for Department Name Change A common misconception (even in the medical community): Plastic Surgery = Aesthetic Surgery (Cosmetic Surgery) 5
Rationale for Department Name Change A definition of Plastic Surgery: that part of operative surgery concerned with the living replacement of missing parts Eduard Zeis
