1 Seebeck 1 Miranda Seebeck Ms. Dasher British Literature and Composition 7 December 2016 Hidden Animal Abuse Animal abuse is not allowed in the United States because laws are in place to stop people from abusing animals. There are many things to consider as animal abuse and some of these abuses, people do not know about. People need to know steps and organizations to help stop the spread of animal abuse around the United States. There are diseases that people can get from animal hoarders, that can cause some serious damage to a person. There are many different types abuses like active, passive, and animal hoarding. Animal abuse plays a key role in our sociality because of the growing and developing of cities and states. Knowing what type of abuse that are out there will help people become greater as a whole and not as an individual. Communities can join together to stop animal abuse from spreading to the next house and the next. People in Greece believe that animals have a soul just like many other people do. Even though, people do not know or completely understand what animal abuse is. Animal abuse is just like abuse to people but it is on the animals. People fight for the animal s rights, so animals have care and respect from people who love them. Lobbyists wants a judge to rule one way in order to help their cause. People have been trying to get the animal abuse to stop and rise the penalty for animal abuse higher. People who abused animals cannot think its fine and get away with it. There was a case in Alaska, "It's an Alaskan law," he said. "Guides have shoot if an animal might get away (Barsness). There are laws that keep people from shooting animals. Some people believe no one should be able to kill animals that has done nothing to an individual but minds its

2 Seebeck 2 own business. In Alaska, they have laws to let people kill animals who might get away from. People cannot stand if other people can shoot a bear who has not done anything but minding its own business. There is no point in shooting the bear in the first place. Even though there are laws to keep people safe from getting injured. There are not many laws to keep people safe from diseases that might spread from an animal. People and kids can get sick from animals in the worst shape. There is a disease which caused a lot of deaths: "Plague is an endemic disease in many wild rodents in the Western United States. Several human cases have been associated with pets, especially cats but there are no literature reports of transmission to humans from pet rodents (Chomel). The plague had kill about 2 million people in the late 1800s. Even though, the plague is not big in this time century, there are other type of disease that are. Diseases come from the abuse of animals and go to us because people are close to the animals almost all the time. Disease can come from any animal in the house even though, dogs and cats are the most popular house pet. The air quality is one of the biggest thing that can make diseases easy to spread because if the air quality is poor, then more disease is going to be living there. Animals that us the restroom in the house can cause some people at get sick, because it is not health for the human body: If animals have been urinating and defecating inside a home and proper sanitation has not been maintained, ammonia odors and mists may accumulate to an extent that could cause adverse health effects, e.g., watering of the eyes or tightness of the chest (Castrodale). This is a serious health code violation because someone can be endangering everyone around them and who goes and in out of the place. They could possible die because it can affect their body in a way no one image it to. Laws are set in place to protect us and the animals and some people do not see it as that.

3 Seebeck 3 There is a great deal of abuse that can cause diseases but there are different types of abuse, such as active and passive abuse. There is active and passive abuse to animals. Active abuse is where someone is wanting to hurt the animal or kill the animal. Active abuse is in many forms, "Forms of active, or intentional, abuse include: torture, beating, mutilation, poisoning, shooting, confinement, especially in unhealthy enclosures lacking fresh air, clean water, food, or sanitation" (Animal Cruelty). Active is easier to define than passive is, because it is more noticeable than passive. Animal shelters can tell if the animal was abused because they can see it on the animal more. Passive takes time to show more than active. Active can lead to death more quickly than passive because people are psychically hurting the animal. People will not realize abuse can happen anywhere. It can happen when someone drop off their dog at a boarding house. They can passively abuse their pet and without anyone s knowledge it happens. Sometimes it will go unnoticed because people working there will not say anything to stop it. The workers might just keep the abuse going because they do not know any better. Passive is where someone do not feed, water, give shelter, neglect, abonnement, or give treatment to the animal if it is needed. People do not understand that the little things for animal can cause abuse to them. For example, not getting the animal to a doctor when it is sick or broken a bone. Is consider as passive abuse to an animal. There are many things that are consider passive abuse: "Neglector passive forms of abuse include: failing to provide access to food, water, shelter, or sanity conditions. Failing to provide adequate shelter from harmful elements, such as cold, heat, rain, or snow. Lack of, or improper, medical care and treatment. Abandonment or neglect (Animal Cruelty). There are many elements that are harmful to animals, people are supposed to keep them from those as their care taker. There had been many cases about abuse to animals and people are starting to see it in children at a very young age. In Nevada, they have laws that are set to help

4 Seebeck 4 the animals and people to have a safer environment. The people in juvenile court is order to take a psychological treatment because they have found out that children that abuse animals are more likely to abuse or even harm someone in the future. They also see that if they abuse an animal, that child could be abused at home or any other place. This is a way to protect not only people but the animals that go through the abuse. If someone is thinking about getting a pet and wants to buy more pets in the same household at one time. Then people might want to read up on some laws about animal hoarding. Animal hoarding is considered abuse to all the animals and to other people around at that time. Animal hoarding is a very serious matter, "Animal hoarding-keeping abnormally large numbers of animals in a confined space- is an example of passive abuse and often results in suffering through malnutrition, starvation, and disease" (Animal Cruelty). Some people do not know what animal hoarding is and how it can affect them and the animals they are keeping. It is part of passive abuse and people who had these animals do not understand that its abuse to the animals and people around them. The law enforcement has to try to catch all these animals and take them to a facility to get them looked at. Most of the animals are not in the best of shape. They have some type of disease and can lead to malnutrition. Now not everyone is an animal hoarding. There are some ways to tell that people are animal hoarders. They will not know how many animals they have, they will not interact with the community, fleas will be on the animals, and animals are not very well social to humans. These animals will have to go thought many steps to make them adoptable and more acceptable in the environment. The responders also have to watch out, "All responders to an animal hoarding situation should be trained in the hazards and risks associated with animal hoarding, basic sanitation and infection control practices (e.g., hand washing), the use and care of personal protective equipment (PPE), and--for those working with

5 Seebeck 5 animals--safe animal handling practices (Castrodale). They have to be careful with the animals they trying to get from an animal hoarding case because they do not know what type of disease they might have. They could have fleas, rabies, and they could not have any of it. They never know what type of disease the animals have or if they do at all. Even though that they do not know, they still proceed with caution and handle the animals with care. The people on the premises has to be careful as well, "The air in premises where animals have been hoarded may have high levels of ammonia, other volatile organic compounds, or high quantities of dust, dander (allergens), and particulate matter (Zhao, 2007)" (Castrodale). They can get sick just by the air they breathe in and out because they do not know what type of condition they will into. Normal animal hoarding cases, they have a higher level of ammonia and dust build up, because they do not clear up after the animals that often. When it builds up, it will cause people to go to the hospital because they are sick from the animal hoarding. There are ways to stop the animal abuse from happening and try to keep at bay. There are steps that can help the animals and stop the abuse. There are also organizations that will take animals and help stop the abuse from happening again. There is HSUS, ASPCA, PETA, and even people in the community can stop the abuse or help the animal out. There are ways for people to help stop. People can donate money, call police, animal control, and even an organization that tries to stop the abuse. Communities can help each other out, The first step is for individuals to familiarize themselves with the animals in their neighborhoods. The more familiar a person is with neighborhood animals, the easier it will be to recognize when an animal is being mistreated" (Preventing Animal Cruelty). These is to help the animals from being abuse more to the point where they might be killed from there abuser. Communities can get together and talk about how to apply rules about animals. They can tell people to give them a photo of the

6 Seebeck 6 dog before the abuse than after a few weeks the community should be able to tell if the animal is abuse or not. Next the community, "The next step is to document the suspected cruelty. An individual should take notes on the cruelty witnessed or the changes noticed in the animal, and should document the dates, times, and any persons involved" (Preventing Animal Cruelty). This way the police have information to tell a court about the abuse that has happen to the animal. It will also protect the people in the community from being charged as well. There way it saves people and the animals from danger. The last step is to tell police or someone that can help the animal to get out of the abuser s house. It saves that animal from being worse than it was. One of the biggest organization, "The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh (Preventing Animal Cruelty). The ASPCA has helped out a great deal with saving animals from abuse. They have taken in animals and gave them care that their owner did not do. The ASPCA are just one of many organizations that has helped animals leave from an abuse household and recover from the abuse. Animal abuse happens all the time and people have to try to stop it from spreading. People can help to stop the abuse though out their communities and contact organization to help stop spreading the abuse. Communities can also work together to stop animal hoarding cases thought out their community. If everyone works together to stop the abuse than the abuse rate will be lower. It will also help to stop the spread of diseases from the hoarding animals. Children will be safer from disease that might spread from the animals. It is all about protect everyone and the animals from harm.
