1 4 th /5 th Grade Feb 17 Jesus Calms the Storm Bible Verse Jesus got up and ordered the wind and waves to be quiet. The wind stopped and everything was calm. Jesus asked His disciples, Why were you afraid? Don t you have any faith? (Mark 4:39-40) Teacher Enrichment This is the sixth lesson in the New School: Moments from Jesus Life series which explores scripture lessons from Jesus life on earth. As both human and divine, Jesus is our best example of what God wants us to be like as humans. This series examines how Jesus lived and the choices He made for His life. It was a dark and stormy night. Well, actually, it was a nice, sunny regular day, but then it BECAME a dark and stormy night! Well, dark and stormy DAY. Jesus was in a boat with His disciples and everything was fine, until it wasn t. The storm clouds came, the wind picked up, the waves rose and before they knew it their boat was tossing and tipping to the point of capsizing. The disciples are terrified and call out to a sleeping Jesus for help. With two simple words, be still, Jesus calms the storm. Fears can be like that storm and come up out of nowhere; other times we can see the storm clouds approaching. Regardless, fear can overwhelm us. A fear like heights can have a simpler answer stay on the ground. But a path out of the fear surrounding the illness of a loved one, job insecurity or a new school can be less clear. This is when we must call on Jesus to calm our fear and bring peace to our worry. In this lesson children will learn that it is normal for people to have fears, but we can ask Jesus to help calm them. They will understand the scary situation may not go away, but trusting in God can bring them peace in their hearts and minds. As you prepare for this lesson, consider what kind of storm is going on in your life that you need Jesus to calm. Are you putting your trust in God that He can bring you peace?
2 Before Class Begins Place the Sign In sheet and a pen where parents can see it upon arrival. Place the Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards and pens where students can see them upon arrival. Check that you have supplies for this lesson: Arrival Activity, Jesus Calms the Storm activity sheet 1 per child Uninflated Balloon Inflated Balloons 1 per child Pin Board Place an arrival activity at each place on the table. Welcome SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards, Attendance chart, stickers, pens, Jesus Calms the Storm activity sheet, pencils, markers Greet each child individually as they arrive. Introduce yourself by name. Help children find or add their name on the attendance chart. Provide each child with a sticker to place in today s column on the attendance chart. Encourage children to complete a Joy or Concern card if they have a particular joy or concern they would like to express. Collect completed Joy & Concern cards. Encourage children to complete a Time or Talent offering card if they gave their time to God or used their talents to serve God or others during the previous week. Children should keep their own completed Time and Talent cards. If children bring monetary offering, they should keep it with them. Direct children to complete Jesus Calms the Storm activity sheet. Encourage conversation among the children and with you! Get to know the children in your classroom by asking about their week including school, activities and families. Introduce new children to each other and encourage friendships. Children s Worship SUPPLIES: Sign In sheet, Joy & Concern cards, Time & Talent cards
3 The Children s Worship Leader will direct your class to come to Ruth Hall at 9:20 or 11:05. Bring the Sign In sheet and completed Joy & Concern cards to Ruth Hall. Hand the Joy & Concern cards to the Children s Worship leader as you arrive. Have children bring their completed Time & Talent cards and any monetary offering. If additional children arrive while in Ruth Hall, have parents complete the Sign In sheet and remind parents that pickup is in Room 105. Encourage children to participate in Children s Worship and provide re-direction if necessary. Assist the Children s Worship leader as needed. At the conclusion of Children s Worship, have children line up and return to Room 110. The Lesson SUPPLIES: White board, One uninflated balloon, Inflated balloons, sharpies, pin board SAY: Today we learned about a time Jesus calmed a storm; and in the process calmed the fears of the disciples. We all get scared at times and we all have different things that scare us. Those things might even change as we get older or are in different situations. It s natural and human to be scared at times. ASK: What things scare you? Write answers on the board. The likely answers here will be snakes, the dark, heights, thunderstorms, spiders, math. You may get a few more personal or serious. Write down everything. SAY: There sure are a lot of things in life that can be scary. I want to change the focus a bit. Let s take a minute and think about something we re afraid of, but this time, let s not think about things like snakes or spiders or roller coasters. Let s focus on something in our life that worries us; something that we have a fear about. Maybe it s about a person you know. Maybe it s something at school or with friends. Whatever it is, get it in your head now. Give children a moment to think.
4 Take out the uninflated balloon. SAY: Sometimes a fear can be like a balloon blowing up. It starts out small, but the more we think about it and the more it worries us, the balloon and the fear gets bigger. (Continue to blow up balloon as you speak) The worry that comes from it can fill us up, just like the balloon fills with air. We get scared and the balloon, or the fear, can overwhelm us. That s when we need to take our fear to Jesus. SAY: That personal fear that you thought of, I d like each of you to write it on one of these balloons. Give each child an inflated balloon. Direct them to write their fear in sharpie on the balloon. They can write one or two words or even a sentence. However they want to express that fear for themselves. Write a fear of your own on a balloon. SAY: Here I have a pin board. Think of these pins as being like Jesus. Our fears are written on the balloons. Let s see what happens when the fears get close to Jesus. Drop your balloon on the pins. The balloon will pop. SAY: Jesus has the power to calm our fears just as a pin can pop an inflated balloon. The balloon is still there and the situation that is causing the fear can still be there, but asking Jesus to calm our fears can relieve the pressure and bring us peace. I d like each of you to come up here and give your fear over to Jesus. If you d like to share your fear with the group before dropping it you can (but they don t have to). My fear was (share yours). Before you drop your balloon, ask God to calm your fear. Allow each child a chance to share their fear if they desire, ask God to calm their fear and then drop their balloon on the pin board. SAY: Let s say a prayer for all of the fears we expressed here today. Dear God, please hear the fears we have. Help us to calm our worry and fear about situations in our lives. We know that you can bring us peace in our hearts and minds. Amen. Lead a discussion about fears using the Discussion Guide below. Teacher Note Be prepared for children to share difficult fears: divorce, illness or death, bullying. If a child shares something you find concerning, notify a church staff member.
5 Discussion Guide All the balloons we used today were the same size. Do you think a smaller or larger balloon would have the same results? Smaller balloon might be easier to pop; Larger balloon might be easier to pop if it s REALLY stretched out. Thicker, sturdier balloon might be harder to pop than a cheap, thin one. Are there any fears that may be too big for Jesus? Too small? Explain. Probably not too big, but it doesn t always feel that way. A big fear or situation can feel overwhelming. The balloon might feel too thick or too huge to pop. However, if Jesus could calm and control a storm He can probably calm anything we are dealing with. May feel like our fear is too small for Jesus to worry about compared to big things in the world like war, sickness, hunger, adult things. But Jesus cares about all of our feelings and fears. Jesus power and love are not limited by the size of our fears. He created us and everything in the universe. There is nothing too great or too small for Him to handle. Closing Lead the children in a closing prayer. You may say your own prayer, ask one of the children to say a prayer or use the one below. God, Thank you for the example of Jesus. He showed us how to trust you to bring us peace in our hearts and minds. Amen If time remains before parents arrive, encourage children to return to their Jesus Calms the Storm activity sheet if they did not complete it. Also encourage conversation between children and with you. This is another opportunity to build relationships with the children in your classroom.
