Specifically, using neuroimaging technology (e.g., fmri) to 1
2 delineate brain markers of therapeutic response to cognitive behavioral therapy, for comparison to other interventions (e.g., medication), and to evaluate treatment-related mechanisms of change. The overarching goal is to increase therapeutic response with available interventions and develop more individually-tailored interventions. GRANTS Current K23 MH A2 Klumpp (PI) $250,000 Brain Mechanisms of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder In the context of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the project proposes to perform pre- and post-treatment functional MRI of limbic-prefrontal circuitry in patients with generalized social anxiety disorder to examine brain markers of response to therapy and treatment-related brain changes. Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (NARSAD) Klumpp (PI) $30,000 Identification of Neural Predictors of Response to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Depression and Anxiety In the context of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the project aims to perform pre- and post-treatment functional MRI of limbic-prefrontal circuitry in a cohort of patients with major depressive disorder, generalized social anxiety disorder, and an anxious control group to examine brain markers of response to therapy and treatmentrelated brain changes across patients and within depression and anxiety. Campus Research Board Award Klumpp (PI) $20,000 Sleep Disturbances in Mood Disorders Across the Lifespan To examine mood and sleep difficulties with objective and subjective measures in a cross-sectional study comprising children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly with depression and/or anxiety disorders and populations at risk for experiencing major depressive disorder. R01 MH Phan (PI), Klumpp (Co-I) $2,517,490 Negative Valence Brain Targets and Predictors of Anxiety and Depression Treatment The objective of the project is to examine the impact of two treatments, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and cognitive behavioral therapies on negative valence systems (NVS) constructs, particularly the Fronto- Limbic Affect Regulation and Emotional Salience brain circuit, and to elucidate whether NVS constructs at pretreatment can predict treatment response across internalizing psychopathologies, including depression and anxiety disorders. Submitted NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Klumpp (co-pi), Pinna (co-pi) Fluoxetine Effects on Neurosteroidal Control of Fear Extinction in PTSD The proposed project aims to examine the impact of an acute dose of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine (FLX), on fear extinction and recall of extinction learning in humans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The proposed project is based on animal models of PTSD showing FLX enhances fear extinction and recall of extinction learning by acting as a selective brain steroidogenic stimulant. Completed NIH-funded CTSA (UL1RR024986) Klumpp (PI) $100,000 Neural Mechanisms of Attention-Emotion Interactions in Social Anxiety Disorder To examine neural correlates of attentional control over threat-relevant stimuli in patients with generalized social anxiety disorder using fmri.
