1 Sudan Measles Situation Report Week 18 Ending on Highlights Sudan reported 167 confirmed measles cases in week 18, as compared with 101 cases during the previous week (increasing trend). Since the beginning of the year, 4127 suspected measles cases reported, including 2336 confirmed cases. The confirmed measles average attack rate in Sudan is 58.3 per million populations. The highest attack rate reported from West Darfur state; 499 per million populations and the lowest in South Kordofan state 1.2 per million populations The laboratory confirmed cases that show IgM positive for Measles are 546 (23.4%) and the epidemiologically linked to a lab confirmed cases are 1731 (76.6%) The total number of outbreak affected localities remains the same, 32 localities in 14 states. Total number of deaths caused by measles in 2015 is 35, with a Case Fatality Rate of 1.5% as per the end of week 18. This is a slight raise as compared with previous weeks (CFR: 1.2) mainly on the account of the increase in the number of death in East Darfur state. Darfur Zone reported the highest measles care fatality rate, with 25 deaths out of total 35 deaths for the whole Sudan (71.4%). East Darfur,137 cases and 13 deaths (CFR: 9.5%), West Darfur 653 cases with 9 deaths (CFR: 1.4%), and North Darfur 186 cases with 3 deaths (CFR: 1.6%). Sudan conducted the Phase 1 response immunization with measles vaccine started on 22 nd April and was continued for 10 days, in 6 states and 28 first priority high risk localities 1
2 Figure (1) The table above shows the distribution of Weekly Confirmed Measles Cases in Sudan (Epi Curve). There is an increasing trend of the number of reported measles cases during the past two weeks. Figure (2) Source of Reporting of Confirmed Measles Cases in Sudan 2015 Most of the cases of measles (56%) are reported from hospitals, showing the high incidence of complicated cases that need inpatient care: 21% by the communities, 12 % through active search by the States Rapid Response Teams and temporary mobile teams, and 9% from the PHC centers. 3 Response updates Federal and states Ministry Of health conducted the Phase 1 response immunization with measles vaccine that started on 22nd April and was continued for 10 days in 28 first priority high risk localities in states. The campaign targeted around 1.66 million children aged 6 month to 15 year, and supported by WHO, UNICEF and health partners in targeted localities. The coverage data is being analyzed and the coverage will be reported next week Figure (4) Measles Immunization Campaign Phase 1 States of Sudan 2015 High level committee for measles response in Khartoum continues to meet regularly. Health Partners Participate in Measles Outbreak Response and Containment Coordination meetings under the leadership of MOH/WHO in Khartoum and all affected states. 4 WHO continues to support the Ministry of Health in Darfur States and South Kordofan to strength the surveillance system. To support the improvement of case management in South Darfur state, WHO jointly with MOH trained 110 health staff and provided basic and rapid response health kits, while supporting a health awareness campaign that covered population. In East Darfur WHO supported in Elfirdous, Baharelarab, Eddeain, Asslaya and Abujabra localities the training of health staff on case management for health staff provision of medicines and medical supplies for the treatment of cases. Islamic Relief World Wide (IRW) continues conducting health awareness sessions in West Darfur reaching out to 47, 000 beneficiaries in Nertiti and 67, 244 beneficiaries in Geneina. MSF Switzerland (MSFCH) continues to support case management and in patient care in two isolation wards in Geneina Teaching Hospital, West Darfur, along with three mobile outreach activities for active case finding and case-management, referral of complicated measles and health promotion: promotion messages reaching 2170 individuals, and 387 cases of measles were treated. ARC continues health education activities targeting 160,618 beneficiaries in Abu Karinka, Adila, Ed Daein, El Ferdous, Assalaya, and Yassin in East Darfur. International Medical Corps conducted case management training for 75 health staff in Alsalaam and Bileil locality in South Darfur State and targeted 75, 000 beneficiaries with health education activity. UNICEF procured and received the 5.8 million doses of measles vaccines to be used for the campaign. Also syringes to replenish the routine syringes being used for the measles campaign were received 10,000 posters, 20,000 mini-posters, and 5,000 Q&A were also printed by UNICEF and distributed to State Ministry of Health (SMoH) to support social mobilization activities at state level. To support to the Ministry for a successful campaign, WHO and UNICEF Health staff and C4D staff from Khartoum and field offices participated in campaign monitoring in all the 28 targeted localities, provided technical support to the vaccination team in the field, and also participated in the daily meeting with SMoH EPI staff and supervisors from FMoH. 4
