2 Staffed by fellowship-trained otolaryngologists, assisted by pediatric nurse practitioners, ENT (Otolaryngology) at Nationwide Children s Hospital provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for children who have ear, nose and throat diseases, hearing loss, sinusitis, airway obstruction and voice problems. In addition, our medical professionals lead and participate in a variety of specialized programs that provide care for patients with unique diagnoses. These specialty programs include: Airway Disorders Clinic Hearing Clinic Rhinology Clinic Salivary Gland Disorders Clinic Voice and Swallowing Disorder Clinic COMPREHENSIVE EXPERTISE From commonly occurring ear, nose and throat disorders to complex problems that require unique expertise, ENT offers the complete range of experience and training to provide effective care at every level. Supported by comprehensive pediatric Audiology Services, ENT works closely with a variety of other services within Nationwide Children s, including Anesthesiology, Interventional Radiology, Outpatient Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Sleep Medicine and Speech Pathology.

4 SPECIALIZED ENT PROGRAMS ENT established the following specialized programs to care for unique patient needs. Each program utilizes the special expertise of pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatric nurse practitioners, nurses, speech therapists, social workers and other health care professionals. AIRWAY DISORDERS CLINIC Infants and children can suffer from a variety of conditions which affect both the upper airways (pharynx and larynx) and lower airways (trachea, bronchi and lungs). Our integrated Airway Disorders Clinic includes the expertise of pediatric otolaryngologists, pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric nurse practitioners and tracheotomy specialists, working together to diagnose and treat airway disorders. Children with congenital or acquired airway stenosis, vocal cord paralysis or dysfunction, chronic drooling or aspiration, chronic tracheotomy, and other congenital or acquired disorders of the airway can be referred directly to this specialty clinic. Comorbidities, such as reactive airways disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and neurologic conditions, may contribute to or adversely affect these conditions as well. Same-visit diagnostic testing, including laryngoscopy, pharyngeal ph probe placement and pulmonary function testing, are also available. With the multidisciplinary approach offered in this clinic, the most appropriate medical and surgical approach to patient treatment can be determined and implemented in the most efficient way possible. HEARING CLINIC Once a child has been diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss, the child s family is often faced with questions and decisions they do not feel equipped to address. The Hearing Clinic at Nationwide Children s Hospital offers a multidisciplinary team approach to supporting our patients and families navigate this process. During the Hearing Clinic appointment, each patient and family will meet with our team of experts: a pediatric otolaryngologist specializing in hearing loss, advanced practitioner nurse, audiologist, speech-language pathologist, social worker and registered nurse. Our team assesses each patient and makes medical recommendations including further diagnostic testing, appropriate assistive listening devices and surgeries including cochlear implants. Parents are given information to connect resources in education and speech and language development. It is our mission to provide a family-centered visit where patients and families leave feeling educated and supported as they work to help their child with hearing loss. RHINOLOGY CLINIC The Rhinology Clinic at Nationwide Children s caters to children of all ages with sinonasal problems. From children with persistent congestion, nasal obstruction, nose bleeds and recurrent sinus infections to those with nasal tumors, the Rhinology Clinic specializes in diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. The clinic is designed to perform advanced diagnostic procedures with an array of endoscopic equipment and work closely with colleagues from Allergy and Immunology to provide comprehensive treatment plans for children with chronic runny nose and severe nasal symptoms from allergy and sinus infections.
5 SALIVARY GLAND DISORDERS CLINIC Excessive drooling can be a problem both medically and socially for children with complex medical issues. Our Salivary Gland Disorders Clinic provides a comprehensive approach to evaluation and surgical management for these disorders when the drooling has not responded to treatment. Our team works closely with each family to determine the best treatment plan for their child. Surgical treatment options are available depending on the specific cause of the excessive drooling, resulting in decreased drooling and increased oral health. In addition to excessive drooling, multiple disorders of the salivary glands can afflict children and can be troublesome. Our surgical team at Nationwide Children s Hospital has expertise and technology to allow for innovative treatment of chronic salivary gland disorders including recurrent salivary gland infections and salivary gland duct obstruction due to stones or narrowing. Our team also has expertise in pediatric salivary gland tumors and their surgical management. VOICE AND SWALLOWING DISORDER CLINIC The Voice and Swallowing Disorder Clinic is a multidisciplinary evaluation clinic for children with voice, swallowing and concern for paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction difficulties. Pediatric otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists are key members of this clinic. They, along with ancillary health care providers from many different specialties, work together to diagnose and treat patients. Patients may be referred by their primary care physician or a specialist who may be concerned with the child s vocal quality (hoarseness, weakness, difficulty with projecting his or her voice), breathing difficulties related to paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction, or due to swallowing difficulties. Patients receive comprehensive evaluations which typically include voice measures, direct visualization of the child s vocal cords and examination of the function of the child s voice or swallowing via stroboscopic exam and/or FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing). After the diagnosis has been made recommendations for further treatment are determined to improve the daily life of the child.
