Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) July 1, June 30, 2017 Population Characteristics: The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency provided funds to support 3 Triple P Providers from July 1, 2015 to June 30, The program had been implemented in three counties: Clearfield, Montgomery and Philadelphia. The following Levels of Triple P were provided: Level 3 Discussion Group (Teen), Level 4 Group (0-12), Level 4 Standard (0-12), and Level 4 Standard Teen. Within the two year time period, there were a total of 50 Practitioners trained and accredited in Triple P across the commonwealth. Targeted Risk and Protective Factors for Triple P: Poor Family Management Family Conflict Parental Attitudes Favorable to Antisocial Behavior Rebelliousness Depressive Symptoms Family Attachment Family Rewards for Prosocial Behaviors Model Fidelity: The goal is for providers to observe 20 percent of the sessions taught to assess model fidelity. For Triple P minimum fidelity is defined as having conducted at least 75 percent of the program as designed by the developer. 1% 99% Sessions Observed: % Met Minimum Fidelity 1% Needing improvement Why is Model Fidelity important? Evidence-based programs are proven to get high quality outcomes for youth, families, and communities. However, these programs only predictably produce quality outcomes when they are implemented as they were designed by the researchers who developed them, with fidelity to the model Number of Caregivers that started Triple P Total Caregiver Participation in Triple P Number of Caregivers that successfully completed Triple P Number of Caregivers that completed atleast 75% of the total program sessions 202 Number of Caregivers with completed and analyzed pre & post PAFAS Surveys 1 P a g e
TRIPLE P LEVELS/DESCRIPTIONS AND OUTCOMES: LEVEL 4 GROUP (0-12) Description: Triple P Level 4 Group is targeted support for parents of children with moderate to severe behavioral difficulties or for motivated parents interested in gaining a thorough understanding of Positive Parenting. Level 4 Group consists of one practitioner facilitating curriculum to a group of 12 parents/caregivers over an 8 week period. The group begins with 4 consecutive weeks of two-hour in-person group sessions, followed by 3 weeks of individualized sessions. These individualized sessions can be done in person or by phone. The 8 th week is for the group to come together again, celebrate their growth and accomplishments, and make plans for how to maintain the changes that they were able to make in their families. Data from July 1, 2015 June 30, Number of PCCD-funded organizations that implemented Level 4 Group. Implementation was for parents/caregivers of children between the ages Number of parents/caregivers that had attended at least one session. 121 Number of parents/caregivers that successfully completed Triple P Level 4 Group; which is 88% of those that participated. 118 Number of parents/caregivers that attended at least 75% of the sessions offered. sessions of the program. Out of the 121 parents/caregivers that had successfully completed Triple P Level 4 Group, 109 of them (90%) completed pre/post surveys. LEVEL 4 GROUP (0-12) OUTCOMES *Improved Overall Parenting Practices Improved Parental Consistency Decreased Coercive Parenting Improved Positive Encouragement Improved Parent-Child Relationship *Improved Overall Family Adjustment Improved Parental Adjustment Improved Family Relationship Improved Parental Teamwork 28% 39% 46% 45% 42% 50% 55% 60% Figure 1: 109 parents/caregivers surveyed 2 P a g e
LEVEL 4 STANDARD (0-12) Description: Triple P Level 4 Standard is targeted support for parents of children with moderate to severe behavioral difficulties or for motivated parents interested in gaining a thorough understanding of Positive Parenting. Level 4 Standard (0-12) consists of one practitioner providing individualized Triple P sessions in a family home or office setting over a 10 week period. Each session typically lasts about an hour. This specific curriculum is designed for parents/caregivers of children between the ages of Data from July 1, 2015 June 30, Number of PCCD-funded organizations that implemented Level 4 Standard. Implementation was for parents/caregivers of children between the ages Number of parents/caregivers that had started Triple P Level 4 Standard. 74 Number of parents/caregivers that successfully completed Triple P Level 4 Group; which is 85% of those that participated. 74 Number of parents/caregivers that attended at least 75% of the sessions offered. sessions of the program. Out of the 74 parents/caregivers that had successfully completed Triple P Level 4 Standard, 72 of them (97%) completed pre/post surveys. LEVEL 4 STANDARD (0-12) OUTCOMES *Improved Overall Parenting Practices Improved Parental Consistency 57% 54% Decreased Coercive Parenting Improved Positive Encouragement 40% Improved Parent-Child Relationship 19% *Improved Overall Family Adjustment 36% Improved Parental Adjustment 49% Improved Family Relationship Improved Parental Teamwork 38% 35% Figure 2: 72 parents/caregivers surveyed 3 P a g e
LEVEL 4 STANDARD TEEN Description: Triple P Level 4 Standard is targeted support for parents of children with moderate to severe behavioral difficulties or for motivated parents interested in gaining a thorough understanding of Positive Parenting. Level 4 Standard consists of one practitioner providing individualized Triple P sessions in a family home or office setting over a 10 week period. Each session typically lasts about an hour. This specific curriculum is designed for parents/caregivers of youth between the ages of Data from July 1,2015- June 30, Number of PCCD-funded organizations that implemented Level 4 Standard. Implementation was for parents/caregivers of youth between the ages *One of the two organizations began implementation in March Number of parents/caregivers that had started Triple P Level 4 Standard. 7 Number of parents/caregivers that successfully completed Triple P Level 4 Group; which is 15% of those that participated. 7 Number of parents/caregivers that attended at least 75% of the sessions offered. Retention of Parents/Caregivers: Parent retention at one of the agencies was hugely impacted by the number of parent education services offered within their community. Through the life of the grant, the provider learned that once a parent/caregiver was court-mandated to attend a parent education course, they tended to flip back and forth between services rather than fully completing a program in it s entirety. This was an external barrier within their community that was extremely challenging to overcome since it was out of the agency s control. sessions of the program. Out of the 7 parents/caregivers that had successfully completed Triple P Level 4 Standard, 7 of them (100%) completed pre/post surveys. LEVEL 4 STANDARD TEEN OUTCOMES *Improved Overall Parenting Practices Improved Parental Consistency Decreased Coercive Parenting Improved Positive Encouragement Improved Parent-Child Relationship *Improved Overall Family Adjustment Improved Parental Adjustment Improved Family Relationship Improved Parental Teamwork Figure 3: 7 parents/caregivers surveyed 20% 57% 57% P a g e
LEVEL 3 DISCUSSION GROUP (Teen) Description: Triple P Level 3 is targeted support for parents of a child with mild to moderate behavioral difficulties, typically dealing with a specific problem or issue. Level 3 Discussion Group consists of 4 different sessions, each of which covers a specific common concern for parents of teens (e.g., reducing family conflict, coping with teens emotions). Parents can attend one or more sessions, depending on interest and need. One practitioner facilitates group sessions that include up to 12 parents per group. Data from February 1, 2017 June 30, 2017 *(5 month time period) 1 Number of PCCD-funded organizations that implemented Level 3 Discussion Group. Implementation was for parents/caregivers of teens ages Number of parents/caregivers that had attended a Level 3 Discussion Group session. 14 Number of parents/caregivers that completed pre/post surveys. Only 19% of parents/caregivers were surveyed due to the challenges of being able to follow-up with parents that attended only one session. sessions of a program. As stated above, surveying parents that attend only one session of Level 3 Discussion Group is challenging. Triple P Practitioners found it difficult to reach parents after participation in only one group session in order to complete a post survey. Out of the 14 parents that had completed pre/post surveys, 1 parent had experienced improved overall parenting practices and 1 parent experienced improved parent-child relationship. From the data received, it is difficult to measure and determine the level of impact that Triple P Level 3 Discussion Group had on parents/caregivers that attended a session within Triple P Level 3 Discussion Group (Teen). Discussion Group Teen may be more of an engagement strategy; while it may provide parents with some evidence-based strategies to begin family change, some parents may need additional, more intensive services to make the larger changes needed within their families. 5 P a g e
