1 Post Camp Report Free Surgical Eye Camp Miran Shah, North Waziristan Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi organized a six day surgical eye camp, 13th - 18th September, at Miran Shah, North Waziristan in collaboration with Pakistan Army. The camp was sponsored by Al-Shifa Foundation of North America. The six day free surgical eye camp was a huge success in every aspect, from organization to execution everything was well managed and exceeded expectations. 370 KM from Rawalpindi, traveling to a war torn area like Miran Shah, North Waziristan and serving the affected population was a new and unique experience for Al-Shifa s surgical team. Pakistan Army s contributions and efforts in this regard are indeed commendable, as almost all the patients treated during the camp were poverty stricken, needy and deserving. Al-Shifa s surgical team moved to the campsite on 13th September, 2017 along with all equipment necessary to set field OT. The team took along advanced technological equipment and machinery for the OT, which included Microscopes, Phaco Machines, Cataract sets and a host of other essentials. Although the team reached the campsite around 6:15 PM, after a 10 hour long drive, the steadfast and dedicated surgical team went right ahead to the Agency Headquarter Hospital, Miran Shah to set up and fumigate the operation theater. 14th-17th September the entire team left no stone unturned while running the free surgical eye camp. From general OPD to biometry, not to mention the lab, OT and Post OP follow-ups everything was up to the mark, timely and worthy of appreciation. The patients were screened, selected and cross checked diligently for the cataract surgery by the dedicated team of doctors and surgeons. The OT experience in Miran Shah, North Waziristan was flawless, all the team members along with surgeons performed 118 cataract and pterygium surgeries. Most of the patients were operated with the latest Phaco technology, while only a few were treated with ECCE. A few patients were postponed due to Severe Eye Infection, Corneal Opacity, Retinal Detachment and Diabetic Retinopathy, while others due to high sugar and blood pressure. (Statistical breakdown mentioned below)

5 VIII - Post-OP (Follow-up of operated Eye & Provision of glasses /medicines)
6 School Screening - North Waziristan Al-Shifa s school screening team did an exemplary job and screened around 3000 children in four days. Although the surgical camp was set up in Agency Headquarter Hospital, Miran Shah the school screening team moved from place to place to cover as many schools as possible. The main areas covered were Eidak, Razmuk, Boya and Miran Shah, a total of seven schools with 3000 children were screened. The screening experience at Cadet College, Razmuk, Orphan Sweet Home, Mir Ali Camp and AFPS Government school, Razmuk was memorable.

10 The Surgical Eye Camp at Miran Shah, North Waziristan was a commendable joint effort of Pakistan Army and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi. The team changed 118 lives through giving patients hope and a gift of sight. Moreover, provision of free glasses and medicine was also highly appreciated by the local community. Over all the locals, Miran Shah Agency Headquarter Hospital administration and Pakistan Army officials were very happy with the services rendered by Al-Shifa Trust, so much so that Brigade commander 205 Bde NWA, Brigadier Irfan invited Al-Shifa to organize yet another free surgical eye camp at Kurram Agency.
