Research tests new ideas in physiotherapy We can find out if standing up early after a stroke and practising standing up and sitting down helps people recover You will practice standing up and sitting down for 30 minutes Minimum of 5 days out of 7 Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 3
4 What happens in the research? Standing frame Normal physiotherapy GROUP A Standing frame programme Compare the results GROUP B Normal physiotherapy There are two groups: A and B Treatment Group A: standing frame programme for 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of normal physiotherapy Treatment Group B: normal physiotherapy for 45 minutes You would not know which you get. The computer decides. This is like flipping a coin

7 Where will the research happen? How long will the research last? The whole research will last for 3 years Your part will last for 12 months You will have appointments at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after your physiotherapy. 8 Will I get paid? You will not get paid for taking part in the research Do I have to take part? You can decide You don't have to You can say no If you don t take part you will still get your normal physiotherapy If you change your mind, you can stop at any time You don't have to give a reason If you stop you will still get your normal physiotherapy Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 8
9 You will need to decide today if you want to take part. This is because the physiotherapy needs to start as soon as possible after your stroke Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 9

12 What might be difficult about taking part? We don't think it is unsafe however the therapy may not help you There may be some side effects You may find the standing tiring You may find interview questions upsetting It will take up your time Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 12
13 What if I don't take part in the research? You will still get your normal physiotherapy Is the research safe? A committee said the research can happen They say it is safe They say that it has been planned properly Aphasia Friendly Participant Information Sheet 13
14 What if something goes wrong? 15 What will happen after the research? The researchers will look at the results They will learn more about standing up early after stroke What will happen to the results?
