1 2018 High Altitude Lecture Series August 3rd 4th, 2018 Physical Therapy Alumni Chapter Presents Moving Patients to Health: the Role of the Physical Therapist in Holistic Health NAU Flagstaff, College of Health and Human Services, Building 66, Room 101 By several estimates, the current system for delivering health care is unsustainable. The United States has essentially become a disease management system rather than a health system. Because the health of the nation has many far reaching implications, to include the ability to adequately staff our military and public services (fire fighters, law enforcement, etc.), the Department of Defense and U.S. Defense Health Agency have identified this as a critical component related to national security. The focus has been shifting from a Health Care System to a System for Health. This continues to require a tremendous paradigm shift for patients, clinicians, and administrators. It is a model that requires emulation across society if the healthcare problem is to improve. The first step is changing the conversation with colleagues and patients. This requires a truly informed approach on the influence of holistic health on pain, function, and quality of life. This information will provide the rationale, background, and platform from which to begin changing the conversation with patients. This period of instruction will orient the following topics around the discussion of holistic health, what the current evidence states, and what our role should be as providers. It will provide examples and implementation strategies adopted by the Military Health System. Patients spend a minor fraction of their life with Physical Therapists in the clinic and we need to leverage that time to prepare them for the rest of their life spent outside of the clinic. 2 Course Instructors: Dr. Dan Rohn is a clinician and active researcher focusing on improving outcomes for musculoskeletal disorders within the Department of Defense and Military Health System. He is a retired Army medical officer, and currently works as an ORISE Fellow for the US. Army Office of the Surgeon General, as well as holding an appointment as an Assistant Professor at Baylor University (Doctoral Programs in Physical Therapy) and Duke University (Duke Clinical Research Institute, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery). He holds graduate degrees from Baylor and Temple Universities and completed a clinical fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center as well as a postdoctoral research fellowship through the University of Utah. He is currently the vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). He is a recipient of the Rose Excellence in Research Award from the APTA, and the US Army Mary Lipscomb Hamerick Lifetime Research Award. He is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP). Dr. Jennifer Henderson has been specializing in Sleep Medicine since 2014 at UBMD Sleep Medicine Facility in Buffalo NY. During her time there she was also a Clinical Professor of Medicine. She has been published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and is an invited lecturer on Sleep Medicine. She earned her degree as a Doctor of Osteopathy at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in Kansas City, Missouri. Angela Hansen, R.D. has over 30 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian. She works closely with community members and established Mountain Heart patients in conjunction with their primary care provider, to improve nutrition in an encouraging environment. Ms. Hansen offers clinic based medical nutrition therapy, meal planning and support for patients with weight management concerns, Diabetes Management through diet including obstetrical or gestational diabetes. Ms. Hansen can also assist patients coping with eating disorders, cardiovascular disease, sleep disorders and a wide array of other dietary matters. Ms. Hansen can formulate a care plan and provide individual nutritional counseling to patients 16 years of age and older. Dr. Brian Kinslow PT, DPT is co owner of EVOLVE Flagstaff, an integrative facility that offers performance training, nutrition, and physical therapy services. Brian s clinical focus is on the intersection of orthopedic diagnosis and conservative injury and pain management with comprehensive health and wellness. Brian is a distinguished graduate of Northern Arizona University s Doctor of Physical Therapy program and has published research regarding promotion of physical activity among clinical populations in the Journal of Physiotherapy Theory and Practice and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. Dr. Cheryl Van Demark PT, MA, C IAYT has practiced physical therapy for over thirty years; skillfully and compassionately serving her patients to optimize movement and improve the human experience. She received both her physical therapy training and her master s degree in physical education at Northern Arizona University. Cheryl's clinical practice has been informed by her many years of study and practice in Yoga. She is certified as a Yoga Therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists. In 2014, she completed the University of Arizona s Integrative Health and Lifestyle Education Program (IHELP). She is a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Physical Therapy Association and The International Association of Yoga Therapists.

3 Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will: 1. Understand the current backdrop of health trends in the United States. 2. Develop a better understanding of Holistic Health and its implications on Physical Therapy interactions. 3. Understand the role of Mindfulness in Health and the evidence for its use in managing health. 4. Understand the role of Sleep in Health and the connection between sleep and pain. Participants will develop a method for screening for sleep problems in patients and the role of the Physical Therapist in managing sleep disorders. 5. Develop a better understanding of the difference between physical activity and exercise, screening physical activity, and the role of the Physical Therapist in addressing physical inactivity. 6. Explore the current evidence on diet, the influence of diet on pain and recovery, and the role of the Physical Therapist in addressing nutrition. 7. Explore the role of emotional and spiritual dimensions in holistic health and the overlap of these dimensions on physical health. 8. Establish a framework for Communication with patients and other healthcare providers. 9. Develop a better understanding of Motivational Interviewing techniques and the role of placebo and nocebo in healthcare delivery. 10. Establish the difference between Health and Healthcare and discuss the Physical Therapists role in changing healthcare delivery.
