2 Sports Medicine Symposium Overview Join Us The Annual Sports Medicine Symposium is presented by the Sports Medicine Committee of the North Carolina Medical Society. Activity Description The purpose of the Symposium is to provide continued education for individuals in the field of Sports Medicine to include Physicians, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists and Athletic Trainers. Upon completion of the Symposium attendees will be well versed in the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sports-related issues including concussions, sudden cardiac arrest, lower extremity injuries, the female athlete, and the special needs athlete. Emphasis will be placed on newer diagnostic techniques and new treatment options for the Symposium topics including the use of office-based diagnostic ultrasound, AED use and PRP treatment options. Ob j e c t i ve s At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to: Identify a plan for the diagnosis, counseling and treatment of the special needs athlete. Assess acute brain injuries in athletes with a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plan. Identify the process for the evaluation and treatment of on the field cardiac events in athletes. Describe the uses of office-based ultrasound on the musculoskeletal system. Identify, counsel and treat the drug abusing athlete. Recognize where to refer the drug abusing athlete. Perform proper diagnoses, counseling and treatment of the female athlete. Recognize where to refer the female athlete. Develop a diagnostic and treatment plan for pain and injuries of the knee, hip and lower extremities. Evaluate the uses and techniques for platelet-rich plasma therapy. Develop skills to utilize office-based ultrasound in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal problems. Develop skills to use and maintain Automated External Defibrillators. Ac c r e d i t a t i o n This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials and Standards of the North Carolina Medical Society through the joint sponsorship of Wake Area Health Education Center and the North Carolina Medical Society. The Wake Area Health Education Center is accredited by the NCMS to provide continuing education for physicians. Cr e d i t The Wake Area Health Education Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Additional Credit Other health professionals will receive Wake AHEC CEU and a certificate of attendance from an AMA PRA Category 1 activity. These certificates are accepted by the NC boards for physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists and athletic trainers. License requirements are subject to change. Wake AHEC recommends that participants contact their licensing boards with specific questions. NCBPTE: Wake AHEC is a pre-approved provider for NCBPTE Continuing Competence Activities. This activity is 6.0 hours. Wake Area Health Education Center will provide 0.8 Continuing Education Units (8 contact hours) to participants upon completion of this activity.

3 Sports Medicine Symposium Overview AAFP Cr e d i t This activity, North Carolina Medical Society 2011 Sports Medicine Symposium, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 8 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Di s c l o s u r e Wake AHEC adheres to ACCME Essential Areas and policies regarding industry support of continuing medical education. Commercial support for the program and faculty relationships within the industry will be disclosed at the activity. Speakers will also state when off-label or experimental use of drugs or devices are incorporated in their presentations. Ac c o m m o d a t i o n s The Holiday Inn Resort is a family-friendly, oceanfront resort featuring indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpools, beach rentals, playground area, volleyball court, a video game room, and fitness center. The resort offers supervised activities for children; call for details. To secure your hotel accommodations, please call the Holiday Inn Resort at (877) and refer to Group Code ED3. The rates are Oceanfront, $254 plus 13% tax, or Standard (marsh view), $234 plus 13% tax, single or double occupancy. Each additional person is $10 per night. These rates are valid for three days before and after the meeting dates. Reservations must be guaranteed by deposit with a check of one night's room rate or by accepted credit card (MasterCard, VISA, American Express or Discover). The deposit is refundable if the reservation is cancelled at least 72 hours prior to arrival. The Holiday Inn Resort has set aside a block of rooms for the Symposium until June 22, so you are urged to make your reservation promptly. Re g i s t r a t i o n The early-bird registration fee for the Sports Medicine Symposium is $175 for NCMS member physicians, $250 for non-member physicians, $50 for residents, FREE for medical students, and $100 for athletic trainers and other allied health professionals. Friday evening's Welcome Reception and Saturday and Sunday mornings breakfasts and breaks are included in the registration fee. Please complete the attached Meeting Registration Form and return it to the NC Medical Society with your check or credit card information as indicated. Early-bird rates end June 15. Registration Cancellation Please note that refunds of registration fees will not be made after Friday, July 8. Refunds, less $25, will be made for cancellations received prior to that date.
