1 REPORT ON 36 TH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE ACADEMY OF ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY (AEB) AND NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON IMPACT OF EMERGING TOXIC CHEMICALS ON HUMANS, PLANTS, DISEASES AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (IETC-2016) - NOVEMBER 25-27, 2016 The 36 th Annual Session of the Academy of Environmental Biology (AEB) and National Symposium on Impact of Emerging Toxic Chemicals on Humans, Plants, Diseases and Sustainable Development (IETC-2016) were held at Jamia Hamdard (Hamdard University), New Delhi on November 25-27, The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Medical Elementology and Toxicology and Department of Botany, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. Jamia Hamdard is one of the few selected Universities in India where a full-fledged Department of Medical and Elementology and Toxicology is fully functional. It was the first University in India to start M.Sc. programme in Toxicology in The Ph.D. programme in Toxicology was started in Alumni of the Department are spread all over the world on key positions in research and academic institutions in India and abroad. The Chief Guest of Inaugural Session on November 25, 2016 was Dr. Manju Sharma, Former Secretory, Department of Biotechnology. The Inaugural Session was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard Prof. S.E. Hasnain. In her address as Chief guest Dr. Manju Sharma highlighted the threat of chemicals to biodiversity and expressed concern over rising levels of greenhouse gases and its effect on human environment. Prof. S.E. Hasnain in his presidential address highlighted the importance of toxicology education which otherwise has been neglected in India. He also urged researchers to take up toxicological research in newer area citing an example of hazards health caused by mobile technology. During the inaugural session Prof. S. Raisuddin, Organizing Secretary introduced the themes of the symposium. Dr. M.S. Alam, Dean, School of Chemical and Life Sciences welcomed the delegates and the vote of the thanks was proposed by Dr. Suhel Parvez, Department of Medical and Elementology and Toxicology. The Keynote Address during the Inaugural session was delivered by the Prof. P.K. Seth, NASI Senior Scientist Platinum Jubilee Fellow and Former Chief Executive Officer, Biotech Park and Former Director Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow. His keynote address was focused on the impact of emerging chemicals on developing brain and its health consequences. He also highlighted that costs involved in neurobehavioral disorder management are enormous. However, such disorder are preventable in case adequate measures are taken to reduce the exposure level of hazard chemicals. During the Inaugural Session various Awards, Medals and Facilitations conferred by AEB on distinguished scientists were handed over to awardees by the Chief Guest and the Vice 1

2 Chancellor. Some notable awardees include Prof. Alok Dhawan, Director CSIR Indian Institute of Toxicology and Research, Lucknow who has facilitated by the AEB for his Life Time Achievements in the field of development and nanomaterial toxicology. Dr H.N. Dutta, a former Scientist from the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi was conferred with the 13 th R.C. Dalela Oration, Dr. H.N. Dutta delivered Oration on the topic Earthquake Precursor: Multidisciplinary Approach. Prof. S. Raisuddin was honored with Archana Gold Medal for Dr. Amit Paul, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi was honored with Archana Gold Medal for During the Inaugural Session, Dr. Krishna Gopal, Secretory, AEB presented his report and highlighted the annual activities of AEB. Dr. A K. Panday, President AEB also spoke on the occasion and highlighted role of environmentalists in protecting the biodiversity and natural resources. The programme comprise of two Plenary Sessions, Six Technical Sessions and two Poster Sessions. One of Plenary Lectures was delivered by Dr. K.M. Chacko, Director, Sriram Institute for Industrial Research, Delhi on the topic Hidden dangers of Toxic World. Lectures in technical sessions included invited lecture and oral presentations on a broad range of the topics dealing with effects of toxic chemicals on biodiversity, carcinogenic environmental interactions, nanotoxicology, pharmaceuticals from marine sources for prevention of toxicity, medicinal plants biodiversity and impact of degraded environment, radiation hazards and its mitigation and many more topics on environment and toxicology. The event was attended by more than a hundred delegates from all over the country and the majority was young researchers. Amir Afjal, Jamia Hamdard and Sayed Aliul Hasan Abdi, Jamia Hamdard (Certificate and cash prize of Rs to each) On day one a vibrant Cultured Programme was presented by the students of School of Nursing and School of Chemical and Life Sciences which was a mix of traditional and modern art forms. The Symposium was held at the beautiful Hamdard Convention Centre and the cultural programme was held at Hamdard Archives Research Centre Auditorium. All the delegates and members of the Executive Committees of AEB appreciated the nice arrangement for this event made by the Organizing Committee. During the valedictory Session it was announced that the next Annual Session of AEB will be held at the CCS University, Meerut in the month of November December, Prof. S.
