1 The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) Approach October 9-10, 2012 (The Basics) February 1, 2013 (Certification Option) Program in Occupational Therapy 4444 Forest Park Avenue St. Louis, MO ot.wustl.edu
2 LOCATION The prestigious Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine is located in the heart of the Midwest. The program was established in 1918 and was the first west of the Mississippi River. It has always been dedicated to training the next generation of leaders in the field of occupational therapy. The program offers a master s degree in occupational therapy (MSOT), a doctoral degree in occupational therapy (OTD), and a PhD in Rehabilitation and Participation Science. In addition to the educational programs, community and clinical services are offered. COURSE DESCRIPTION The CO-OP Approach Occupational therapists have a unique role in maximizing the fit between what the client wants or needs to do, and his/her capabilities. Traditionally, OTs have emphasized remediation of the client s deficits in performance components rather than looking at the actual performance difficulties that prevent clients from experiencing performance success. The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach is an intervention to support the therapist in enabling performance. Initially created for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), CO-OP is now used more broadly with both children and adults, particularly with those with head injury and stroke who have occupational performance difficulties. This course is being offered in two stages. The first is a two-day workshop that takes place October 9 and 10, You will be introduced to the basics of CO-OP and provided with a foundation for its application to your clinical populations. In the CO-OP client-centered approach, the clients are taught to identify cognitive strategies that help them acquire skills and improve performance in areas that support their daily lives. CO-OP involves a paradigm shift in the therapist s general approach to intervention: within the context of client-centered cognitive strategy use, CO-OP transfers the therapist s focus from impairment reduction to occupational performance, from explicit instruction to guided discovery, and all within the context of cognitive oriented strategy use. The second stage of this course is an optional certification day that will take place February 1, The certification is positioned so that it will allow participants time to use CO-OP with their own clients in their own settings, and come back with video tapes and case scenarios to discuss this experience and review and consolidate their knowledge with the instructors. Participation in the certification component of this training will result in the participants being certified as a CO-OP instructor and registered with the CO-OP Academy. The day will be designed in adult education principle with the participants setting the agenda for discussion and practice. The agenda below is only offered as an example of how the day will unfold, depending on participant needs. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Occupational Therapists COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the Basic workshop, participants will have a foundational understanding of: 1. The rationale for using cognitive, top-down approaches
3 2. The evidence for CO-OP 3. The seven key features of CO-OP 4. The use of dynamic performance analysis 5. The use of global and domain specific strategies 6. The use of guided discovery to teach another to find cognitive strategies that support occupational performance 7. An evidence framework for practice Upon completion of the certification portion of the workshop, participants will be: 1. Certified as a CO-OP therapist 2. Registered with the CO-OP Academy 3. Appear (if they wish) on the CO-OP website as a certified CO-OP therapist FACULTY Helene Polatajko, PhD, OT Reg. (Ont.), OT(C), FCAOT, FCAHS, is an internationally respected researcher, educator, and practitioner with numerous national and international awards. Dr. Polatajko s clinical experience is primarily in the area of pediatrics, most especially with children with motor-based performance problems. However, her research, focused mainly on outcome measurement and intervention, spans the ages and several disability groups. Her primary research interest is the role of cognition in motor-based performance. Her work with colleagues and graduate students in this area has led to the development of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance approach. This now internationally recognized intervention approach enables clients with performance problems to achieve success. Dr. Polatajko is a Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy with cross appointments to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, the University of Toronto Neuroscience Program, and the Graduate Department of Rehabilitation Science. She is also an Adjunct Scientist with St. John s Rehab, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy. Sara McEwen, PT, PhD is a scientist at St. John s Rehab Hospital, Toronto, and Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, University of Toronto. Broadly, she is interested in investigating longterm meaningful outcomes in people living with chronic conditions. Her specific interests include exploring the links among cognition, motivation, and motor skill acquisition, and facilitating knowledge exchange between front-line health professionals and researchers. Her current projects include a Phase II randomized controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of CO-OP in people with subacute stroke, and a series of exploratory cancer rehabilitation studies. She obtained her B.Sc. in Physical Therapy and M.Sc. in Rehabilitation Science from McGill University, Montreal, and PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Toronto. Prior to her current role as a scientist, Dr. McEwen worked for many years as a clinical physical therapist, educator, and project coordinator. Duana Russell-Thomas, MSOT, OTR/L, is the Community Practice Manager at the Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. In her role, she works to translate research outcomes into evidence-based, practical clinical services that promote participation, fuel educational experiences and inform policy. Duana has practiced for 14 years in a variety of settings, including the community, geriatrics, and rehabilitation. She is trained as a self-management facilitator and a CO-OP therapist and is actively engaged in clinical trials using both methodologies. Duana earned her BS in Psychology from Washington University and her MSOT from the Program in Occupational Therapy at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where she is currently pursuing the post-professional OTD. Timothy Wolf, OTD, MSCI, OTR/L is an Assistant Professor in the Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and is currently the Director of the Performance, Participation, and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory. The goal of Dr. Wolf s lab is to generate knowledge that will guide intervention aimed at improving participation in home, work, and community activities post-
4 stroke. The lab is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Canadian Institutes of Health, and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. His current projects include two clinical trials using CO-OP with persons with stroke. Dr. Wolf received his BS in Health Science-Pre Occupational Therapy from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri and his Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) from the Program in Occupational Therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He lectures nationally and internationally regarding the topics of mild stroke and mild neurological injury, cognitive assessment and intervention, and chronic disease management.
