Emphasis is placed on the concept of homeostasis and relationship of structure and function. (Gen Ed D-1-- DL), 0 Credit Hours. 2 Objectives: Students will be able to identify:.. and use practically the language of anatomy and physiology... major body tissues and characteristics of those tissues... the components of the skeletal system and major bone markings... major location, origin, insertion and actions of skeletal muscles... components of sensory systems in the body and how each sense functions... major components of the cardiovascular system and how the heart functions... structures of the respiratory system and evaluate the forms of respiration. Materials (Required): Manual: Marieb, E. Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab Manual, 9 th ed. ISBN: Binder and Loose Leaf Paper Dates: The last day to withdraw from this course without a grade is January 30 th The last day to withdraw from this course with a W is March 16 th Spring Break is Match 5 th -9 th Course Website: Each week you will need to go to the course website and print out the materials for that week s lab. Additional practice quizzes and materials correlating with the lab manual can be found at the address below. However you must have an access code in the manual that is new or has not been previously used. Grading: (I) 60% of your grade is based upon lecture, 40% on this lab. The way your overall grade is calculated is as follows: lecture average X lab average X 0.4 (II) Your grade will be based on four exams covering lab based material(s). Format: Practicum, labeling, fill in the blank and very few multiple choice. (III) Scale: A = % B = 89-80% C = 79-70% D = 69-60% (IV) Grade Requirements: Students who have majors in certain disciplines must receive a certain grade or a retake is highly suggested. The average of a B is required for: Pre-Dental, Pre-Medical, Pre-Physical Therapy and Nursing. Health Care Administration requires a C average. Cheating: This behavior will not be tolerated and you will receive an automatic F in the course. Attendance: This is a laboratory course so attendance is crucial and absolutely required. Failure to attend more than two classes will result in an automatic F/N. I do take attendance! For every unexcused absence you will have a deduction of five points from the final grade. We only meet once a week and this laboratory moves very swiftly; if you must miss you are required to have a statement of absence with a phone number to contact. Makeup Exams: Most exams have practical components and these cannot remain up after the day of the exam. It is department policy that if you must miss an exam you contact me as soon as the absence will be known. Makeup exams are only allowed for the following (department policy): family death, personal "serious" injury and jury duty or court orders. Open Lab: You will want to return to lab at the following times to better study material. Note: Labs are closed during exam weeks MWF: 07:30-10:00am; TR 07:30-11am; F 12:30-05:00pm

3 Miscellany (The Legal Stuff): (I) Electronic Use Policy: Cell phones are allowed on vibrate. Texting, pagers, etc. are allowed as long as they do not distract others. If you have to take a call just step outside please. ipods and other music devices must be off however. Once an exam is in session put these away, if not you are cheating under department guidelines. (II) Food Policy: I allow drinks and food in the lab; if you spill it clean it up immediately. (III) No laptops or computer use in class. (IV) Contacting me: If you me please put your section number in the in addition to your WKU ID. I have a lot of "children of the corn" to teach so a reminder of your section is grand until I learn names. (V) Concerning Disabilities: Students with disabilities who require accommodations (academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids or services) for this course must contact the Office for Student Disability Services, DUC A201. Please DO NOT request accommodations directly from the professor or instructor without a letter of accommodation from the Office for Student Disability Services. (VI) Tutoring: The Learning Center (TLC) is located in the Academic Advising and Retention Center, DUC-A330. TLC tutors in most major undergraduate subjects and course levels throughout the week--we can also direct you to one of many tutoring and assistance Centers across campus. I encourage you to talk with me about any problems whether class related or not. I pride myself on being able to educate/help my students along even outside of the classroom. My door and ears are always open. My personal philosophy on teaching is that I work for you.
