BAY STATE COLLEGE Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Course Descriptions OTA 100 Introduction to Occupational Therapy Assistant Course Description: This course introduces students to the foundations, history, philosophy, and development of occupational therapy over the last 100 years. The scope of occupational therapy professional organizations will be defined. Delineation between the roles and functions of the registered occupational therapist and the occupational therapy assistant will be discussed and emphasized. OTA 101 Fundamentals of Occupation Therapy Assistant Practice Course Description: This foundation course focuses on fundamentals of occupational therapy practice, including but not limited to: supervision, Standards of Practice, interventions, medical documentation, and management of therapy services. Professional ethics, reimbursement for services, legal aspects, and quality assurance are introduced. Fundamental clinical skills are also introduced such as transfer techniques, Range of Motion (ROM) Manual Muscle Testing and goniometer measurement. Students are able to integrate knowledge gained in the basic sciences and apply movement and body structures to occupational therapy practice in relation to normal movement and the impact of disease/disability on movement. Students also study the environments and contexts where future clients live, work and play. OTA 141 Level I Clinical Fieldwork Experience 1 Course Description: The first Level I fieldwork is offered in the second semester of the first year and provides the student the opportunity to observe and engage in occupational therapy services in various clinical and community settings. Observation skills, individual and group interactions, reflective thinking and the importance of documentation are emphasized and incorporated into course work. Students observe first-hand the entire scope of the occupational therapy process and are able to recall previously gained knowledge to enhance the fieldwork experience. OTA 121 Therapeutic Media Course Description: Use of Therapeutic Media and Activity Analysis are essential skill for the occupational therapy assistant and as such, this course introduces the student to the therapeutic value of engaging in various forms of media utilized in a variety of occupational therapy settings. Students begin to use critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to

3 identify, analyze and adapt meaningful activities in areas of self-care, work, play/leisure and living environments. Extensive activity analysis and application to various care settings where clients reside is emphasized. The context in which the activity is performed and client factors are also incorporated into this course as this is information first introduced in the Introduction to Occupational Therapy Assistant. OTA 122 Pediatric Interventions for the OTA Course Description: This course is offered in the first year and introduces the student to implementation of occupational therapy in developmental disabilities with the primary emphasis on birth to 26 years of age. Students review the following aspects of childhood normal development, developmental disabilities, etiology, pathology, symptomology, and prognosis. Students will also discuss the basis objectives of pediatric to young adulthood occupational therapy treatment including medical procedures, and safety precautions. The role of the family in treatment along with the environment are areas of study. OTA 123 Clinical Pathology for the OTA Course Description: This course, taken in the first year following Anatomy and Physiology I (A&P) and concurrently with A&P II, focuses on advanced study of specific orthopedic, neurological, rheumatological and medical conditions commonly seen in occupational therapy practice. OTA 142 Level I Fieldwork Experience 2 Course Description: This course is the second Level I fieldwork experience and provides clinical observation of client services offered in mental health settings. Observation skills, individual and group interaction, establishment of client rapport, and the observation and understanding client behaviors are emphasized. Documentation for mental health settings is also reviewed. Understanding how client factors, context, and performance patters support or hinder occupation engagement for the mentally ill are incorporated into this Level I. OTA 210 Principles and Applications in Mental Health Course Description: This course is offered in the first year and emphasizes occupational therapy therapeutic skills and techniques in mental health settings. Disorders commonly seen in occupational therapy are discussed. Client observation, behaviors, interview skills, group dynamics and skills are explored. Students will participate in the selection and implementation of therapeutic, occupation-based interventions for daily living, play and leisure and work specific to the mental health setting. Therapeutic use of self in relation to the mentally ill population is also emphasized. OTA 220 Group Skills: This course emphasizes group dynamics in a mental health setting. Students will have the opportunity for planning, organizing and implementing

4 therapeutic groups that facilitate engagement in every-day occupations. Students will be able to identify various roles of participating members. Skills necessary for facilitating group, i.e., leadership styles, setting limits and meaning of behavior will be explored. plan, organize, and implement small groups in the classroom setting prior to implementation in the mental health setting. Students will explore common themes associated with mental illness i.e., poor hygiene, lack of leisure/play awareness, decreased motivation for engagement in occupations, and poor OTA 230 Geriatric Patient Care Course Description: Moving along the continuum of simple to complex, Geriatric Patient Care is offered in year two. Students have gained an understanding of Pediatrics, body structures and function, occupation, roles, occupation and the environment, performance patterns, contexts, and roles and can now apply this knowledge to the geriatric population. This course explores the psychosocial and physical aspects of the aging process, and the role of occupational therapy. Students have the opportunity to develop programs, i.e., fall prevention, nutrition, exercise that have relevance to the elderly. Treatment planning, application and prevention strategies are explored in relation to the elder s environment and meaningful occupations. OTA 240 Principles and Applications of Physical Disabilities Course Description: This course is taken in the second year prior to Level II fieldwork and is the culmination of previously acquired knowledge of clinical skills, treatment planning and intervention, adaptations and modifications, occupation, performance patterns, context and occupation and the environment studied in depth. Students are given the opportunity to begin to hone entry-level skills in areas of transfers, Manual Muscle Testing, ROM, and Goniometer measurement. Students integrate, apply and practice therapeutic skills necessary for success in clinical practice.. OTA 260 Level II Clinical 1 Course Description: This course is the first of two Level II clinical rotations. The students are provided with an unpaid affiliation in a clinic setting, performing the delivery of occupational therapy services within the scope of the occupational therapy assistant s role and responsibilities under the supervision of a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant. The student must complete eight (8) weeks on a full-time basis. The supervisor will evaluate the student s clinical competency for entry-level practice including but not limited to professional behavior, critical thinking, and the use of occupation-based interventions using the AOTA Level II Fieldwork Evaluation form for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Student.

5 OTA 261 Level II Clinical 2 Course Description: This is the second of the two Level II full time clinical rotations. The students are provided with an unpaid affiliation in a clinical setting performing the delivery of occupational therapy services within the scope of the occupational therapy assistant s role and responsibilities under the supervision of a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant. The students must complete eight (8) weeks on a full-time basis. The supervisor will evaluate the student s clinical competency for entry-level practice including professional behaviors, critical thinking skills, and the use of occupation-based interventions using the AOTA Field Work Evaluation form for the Occupational Therapy Assistant Student.
