Biel A. Trail Guide to the Body: A hands-on guide to locating muscles, bones, and more. (4th Edition) IV. Supplemental readings on OAKS Course Description: This laboratory course focuses on the assessment of athletic injuries occurring to the extremities of the human body. Mechanisms and characteristics of athletic injuries commonly occurring to the joints of the human extremities will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the components of the comprehensive orthopedic physical examination (including: history, inspection, palpation, functional testing, and special evaluation techniques). The laboratory is designed to develop the student s psychomotor skills of orthopedic examination and assessment. Course Objectives: The following competencies are taught and evaluated in this course. These competencies meet requirements set forth by the CAATE (Commission for the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Programs). 1) Identify and explain the risk factors associated with common congenital and acquired. (RM-C2) 2) Identify and explain the epidemiology data related to the risk of injury and illness related to participation in physical activity. (RM-C3) 3) Explain the importance and use of standard tests, test equipment, and testing protocol for the measurement of cardiovascular and respiratory fitness, body composition, posture, flexibility, muscular strength, power, and endurance. (RM-C11) 4) Identify the normal acute and chronic physiological and pathological responses of the human body to trauma, hypoxia, microbiologic agents, genetic derangements, nutritional deficiencies, chemicals, drugs, and aging affecting the musculoskeletal and other organ systems and musculoskeletal system adaptations to disuse. (PA-C4) 5) Describe the etiology, pathogenesis, pathomechanics, signs, symptoms, and epidemiology of common orthopedic injuries, illnesses, and diseases to the body s systems. (PA-C5)
2 6) Describe the common techniques and procedures for evaluating common injuries including taking a history, inspection/observation, palpation, functional testing, special evaluation techniques, and neurological and circulatory test. (D1-C6) 7) Explain the relationship of injury assessment to the systemic observation of the person as a whole. (D1-C7) 8) Explain the roles of special test in injury assessment. (D1-C10) 9) Describe strength assessment using resistive range of motion, brake test, and manual muscle testing. (D1-C12) 10) Describe the use of diagnostic tests and imaging techniques based on their applicability in the assessment of an injury when prescribed by a physician. (D1-C13) 11) Explain medical terminology and abbreviations necessary to communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals. (D1-C16) 12) Describe the components of medical documentation. (C7) Demonstrate ability to: 1) Instruct the patient how to properly perform fitness tests to assess his or her physical status and readiness for physical activity. Interpret the results of these tests according to requirements established by appropriate governing agencies and a physician. These tests should assess flexibility and strength. (RM-P1,1.1,1.2) 2) Obtain medical history the patient that includes a previous history and history of the present injury. (D1-P1) 3) Perform inspection and observation of the clinical signs associated with common injuries including the deformity, posturing and guarding, edema/swelling, and discoloration. (D1- P2) 4) Perform inspection and observation of postural, structural, and biomechanical abnormalities. (D1-P3) 5) Palpate the bones and soft tissues to determine normal pathological characteristics. (D1- P3) 6) Measure the active and passive joint range of motion using commonly accepted the techniques, including the use of a goniometer an inclinometer. (D1-P5) 7) Grade the resistive joint range of motion and manual muscle testing and break tests. (D1- P4) 8) Apply appropriate stress test for ligamentous or capsular stability, soft tissue muscle, and fractures. (D1-P7) 9) Apply appropriate special tests for injuries to the specific areas of the body as listed above. (D1- P8) 10) Document the results of the assessment including the diagnosis. (D1-P10) 11) Obtained a medical history of the patient that includes a previous history and history of the present condition. (MC-P1) 12) Perform a visual observation of the clinical signs associated with common injuries or illnesses including deformity, edema/swelling, discoloration, and skin abnormalities.(mc-p2) 13) Palpate the bones and soft tissues, including the abdomen, to determine normal pathological characteristics. (MC-P3) 14) Perform a functional assessment for safe return to physical activity. (EX-P7)
3 15) Use appropriate terminology and medical documentation to record injuries and illnesses. (AD-P5) 16) Use appropriate terminology to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with patients, physicians, colleagues, administrators, and parents or family members. (AD-P6) Professional Behavior: Students are expected to conduct themselves as professionals and to demonstrate respect for the course instructor and peers with behavior that is conducive to a positive learning environment. Students are expected to be on time and present for each class session. Cell phones and other electronic devices must be silenced prior to the beginning of class and stored away unless being utilized during class to complete an assignment as directed by the instructor. Lab Attire: Appropriate attire that allows exposure of body regions is required for lab sessions (e.g. shorts, tank tops, etc.). Please be mindful and dress conservatively. Weather conditions are not an excuse to be unprepared with proper class attire, so dress in layers, if necessary. Attendance: Class attendance is an individual student responsibility and will be recorded on a REGULAR basis. Students are expected to be present and on time to every class, and to complete all assignments as outlined. Excused absences will be permitted for personal emergencies (personal and family-related illness or death, documented with a note from a health care provider), religious observances, participation in University-sponsored activities (athletics or artistic performances), or government-required activities (military service or jury duty). It is the student s responsibility to communicate to the instructor in advance about missing class via or in person. Missed work must be made up and it is the student s responsibility to arrange a make-up time. Missed exams and quizzes can only be made up if there is documentation for an illness or conflict. Make-up quizzes and exams must be scheduled in advance; otherwise the student will receive a zero. Repeated tardiness and/or absences will result in a lowered grade. Honor Code and Academic Integrity: It is expected that each student in this class will conduct him or herself within the guidelines of the honor system. (See Student Handbook) All academic work should be done with the high level of honesty and integrity that this institution demands. The student handbook is a guide to your responsibilities and rights as a student. If you are not familiar with the document, please take the time to review the information contained within the handbook. Incidents where the instructor determines the student s actions are related more to a misunderstanding rather than misjudgment will be handled by the instructor as a Class 3 Honor Code Violation. An intervention designed to help prevent the student from repeating the error will be given to the student. The intervention, submitted by form and signed both by the instructor and the student, will be forwarded to the Dean of Students and placed in the student s file. Cases of suspected academic dishonesty will be reported directly by the instructor and/or others having knowledge of the incident to the Dean of Students as a Class 1 or Class 2 Honor Code
4 Violation. A student found responsible by the Honor Board for academic dishonesty will receive a XF in the course, indicating failure of the course due to academic dishonesty. This grade will appear on the student s transcript for two years after which the student may petition for the X to be expunged. The student may also be placed on disciplinary probation, suspended (temporary removal) or expelled (permanent removal) from the College by the Honor Board. Students should be aware that unauthorized collaboration--working together without permission- - is a form of cheating. Unless the instructor specifies that students can work together on an assignment, quiz and/or test, no collaboration during the completion of the assignment is permitted. Other forms of cheating include possessing or using an unauthorized study aid (which could include accessing information via a cell phone or computer, or using unauthorized resources during quizzes or exams), copying from others exams, plagiarism, and giving unauthorized assistance. Research conducted and/or papers written for other classes cannot be used in whole or in part for any assignment in this class without obtaining prior permission from the instructor. Evaluation Criteria: Attendance/Participation (2 pts each class) Skill Assessments (5 x 10 pts) Midterm Practical Examination Final Practical Examination Total 50 pts 50 pts 100 pts 100 pts 300 pts Final Course Grade: Totaling the number of points earned and dividing it by the total number of available points will calculate/determine the final grade. The final grade for this course will be assigned based solely upon the percentage of points earned. No other factor will be considered. The grade will be assigned according to the following table: A >90% B % D % A % C % D 65 64% B % C 74 70% D % B 84 80% C % F <62%
5 NOTE: The last day to withdraw with a grade of W for the semester is Thursday, October 27, Details of Evaluation Criteria: Late work will result in a 10% deduction in points per day. Assignments that are not turned in will receive a grade of zero. Attendance/Participation Attendance AND participation will be integral components in learning and application of this class. Students are not only required to attend all lab sessions, but also to participate in all lab activities. Points can be deducted at the instructor s discretion for lack of participation even when student is in attendance. Should the student routinely loose participation points, the instructor will communicate with the student about methods for improvement. Skill Assessments Students will complete assigned skill assessments. Students should complete these skill assessments at their clinical sites, but there will also be allotted class time throughout the semester. The clinical preceptor or course instructor must sign off on the skill assessment for full credit. Examinations Two practical examinations (Midterm and 100 pts each) will be given on the dates on the tentative laboratory schedule. Exam Policy: Notification will be provided well in advance (via class announcement and OAKS posting) of any change of an exam date. Please note that if you miss a scheduled exam you will earn zero (0) points for that particular examination. No make-up examinations will be given, unless written documentation is obtained. It is the instructor s prerogative to give an alternate exam if deemed necessary. If you know you will be unable to attend an examination due to an excused absence (i.e. athletic participation, religious holiday, etc.) you must notify the instructor at least one week prior to the absence so alternative arrangements may be made.
