2 Course Tutor: Mr Kam-Wah Mak BSc, Dip Ac, Cert. Ed., MCSP Chartered Physiotherapist, Advanced Member and Approved Trainer of Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) Tutor biography After graduating in Applied Biology in 1984, Mr. Mak worked for 6 years at the Regional Immunology Centre (Newcastle on Tyne) as Medical Scientist on humoral and cellular immunology. After graduating a second time in 1993; this time in Physiotherapy, he gained wide experience in the musculoskeletal field at several NHS hospitals in the North of England. He became employed in private practice for a short spell in 1997 where some of his time was spent treating professional athletes. He then moved into full time higher education for the next five years, lecturing in Physiotherapy first at University of Teesside and then a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. After leaving higher education in 2002, he worked part time for two years as a clinical specialist in musculoskeletal field in a leading NHS hospital and in his spare time, he delivers postgraduate education in acupuncture and related topics throughout the UK. He is currently researching into Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage and Manipulation) and seeking ways to integrate this form of manual therapy into mainstream physiotherapy practice. He also finds time after leaving the NHS for a second time in developing his multi-disciplined private practice with clinical loads primarily in the area of complementary therapy, secondly in musculoskeletal and sport medicine. Mr Mak is an advanced member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Acupuncture gained in 1996 at Nottingham. In parallel to the acupuncture study he also attended Sunderland University on a teaching course, which led to a Certificate in Education awarded in He is an active promoter of research and on the use of acupuncture in the North East of England. Mr Mak has been an approved trainer of the AACP for a number of years and is currently an active member of the Education, Training and Research Committee (ETRC) of the AACP. Since 1997, Mr Mak has run numerous acupuncture courses in the UK and is at the forefront of educational initiatives with a long experience in the delivery of up-to-date, practical acupuncture education throughout the UK.

3 Outline of Teaching Syllabus & Course Curriculum INTRODUCTION The role of Physiotherapy is primarily to administer treatment modality/ies for the relief of pain. The use of Acupuncture, over the last decade, has become one of the front-line approaches in the management of musculo-skeletal syndrome. This treatment modality, for pain relief, is now acceptable within main-stream medicine. Consequently, Physiotherapists are embarking on courses, recognised and approved by the AACP, which will ensure that it has a practical-based component substantiated by adequate theoretical background. COURSE AIM The aim of the course is to introduce the safe and effective practice of acupuncture. By the end of the course participants will be able to: - a) Understand the principles of: a. the safe and hygienic application of acupuncture needles b. the methods of location and safe needling of acupuncture points c. combinations of simple treatment regimes for common musculoskeletal disorders and pain d. the safety standards in acupuncture as well as its precautions and contraindications. b) have an awareness of: a. the differerent approaches to acupuncture treatment (western vs traditional Chinese acupuncture) b. systems such as ear acupuncture and techniques such as electroacupuncture and myofascial needling MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of the module, the participants will be able to:- Demonstrate knowledge of the current theories of pain and acupuncture. Demonstrate knowledge of the meridians and their points. Demonstrate safe needling techniques, including hygiene and sterilisation practices according to health and safety regulations. Be aware of the contra-indications in acupuncture and the dangerous sites on the body. Be aware of current evidence of acupuncture in support of clinical practice. Outline a treatment plan for a patient, where acupuncture for pain relief is indicated. Select and treat common musculoskeletal conditions using appropriate acupuncture points. Be aware of other acupuncture related techniques employed by clinicians. COURSE SPECIFIC SKILLS The participants will develop skills in treating musculoskeletal conditions using dry needling techniques. Also to introduce to the participants the theory and application of trigger point acupuncture, electroacupuncture and auriculotherapy. MAIN LEARNING STRATEGIES Lectures and demonstrations will be used to introduce new treatment concepts and also to enhance the understanding of taught and practical elements of the course. A problem solving approach will be used in practical sessions. This will provide the participants the opportunity to integrate knowledge and understanding acquired in previous professional practice and to develop new therapeutic skills.
