Influence of Selected Herbicide Treatments on Ironweed Control, Forage Yield, and Forage Quality in Tall Fescue Pastures Kevin W. Bradley & Robert L. Kallenbach University of Missouri
Tall Ironweed (Vernonia altissima Nutt.) A perennial from a basal crown with stems that often persist throughout the winter Identified as one of the ten most common and troublesome weeds of pastures in Missouri Little is known about the effects of tall ironweed on forage yield or quality
Materials and Methods Trials established in tall fescue pastures with existing tall ironweed infestations Plots (10 x 45 ) arranged in a RCB design with 4 replications Herbicide applications made with CO 2 backpack sprayer delivering 15 gpa Weed control and crop injury visually rated throughout the growing season Tall ironweed stem counts taken 1 year after treatment (YAT)
Application Information Height Density Application Trial Stage (Inches) (# / m 2 ) Date 2004 Vegetative 7 84 May Vegetative 8 60 May 27
Materials and Methods: Forage Harvests & Quality Analysis Forage yields determined by harvesting the middle 5 x40 of each plot with HEGE forage harvester Samples from each plot ground and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), and crude protein content determined by Near Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy (Pacific Scientific 5000 scanning monochromator)

Conclusions Good (>80%) tall ironweed control was observed during the season of treatment with all treatments except Cimarron + Rangestar 1 YAT, all treatments provided similar reductions in tall ironweed stems, but 2, 4-D + Banvel and high rates of Grazon P+D and Curtail reduced ironweed populations from to 62 to 73%
What can we learn from this example? In the case of ironweed, herbicide treatments DID NOT improve forage quality when compared to the untreated control but how many times will we find this kind of situation? As for the effects of weeds on forage quality, the question you should ask is, DO THE CATTLE EAT IT? Ironweed is still a top-5 weed in Missouri! Initially, herbicide treatments will REDUCE total forage yield, especially in weedy areas. Eventually, yields will recover and return to normal or higher levels. In this example, in one year s time herbicide treatments increased total forage yield 27% (404 lbs). At $60/ton, this is equal to $12 MORE PER ACRE. Is this enough to make a herbicide treatment worthwhile?
