5 Trauma Orthopaedics and Falls Placement There is an emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to patient s rehabilitation. Therapists work closely with rehabilitation workers planning programmes of care, which are patient specific and goal orientated. Programmes may include ADL activities, indoor and outdoor mobility, transfers and restoration of movement. A weekly multidisciplinary team meeting ensures a client centred approach. At this meeting, patient s progress and ongoing rehabilitation goals are discussed. Trauma Orthopaedics Referrals are received via Wansbeck General Hospital, Fracture Clinic or Morpeth Cottage Hospital. Attendance at Ward 6 MDT on a weekly basis, allows for effective communication regarding discharge planning. Facilitating a timely discharge from hospital supports the NSF for Older People and Your Choice, Your Say. (DoH, 2001, 2005). Patients usually receive intensive rehabilitation once home with a multidisciplinary and community focus. There may be opportunity to spend some time on the wards and observe surgical procedures. Falls Prevention There is a specialist Falls Service at Morpeth Cottage, which is consultant led.
6 Referrals are received from primary care, Care Management, other AHP s and the Falls Clinic, based at Wansbeck General Hospital. This placement will offer the opportunity of attending the Consultant s clinic, Tilt Room and experience of undertaking the appropriate physiotherapy and occupational therapy assessments. You will be encouraged to actively participate in the weekly Falls Exercise and Education Group. Preparation for Placement Students are expected to carry out the following work prior to the commencement of the placement: 1. Background reading on the common orthopaedic and elderly conditions. 2. Revision of anatomy and physiology of the upper limb and lower limb and trunk. Physio students will be expected to carry out gait analysis and balance assessments. 3. Provide a list of learning outcomes relevant to the placement and individual learning needs. 4. Individual SWOT analysis. 5. Walking aids: clinical reasoning use, measuring and instruction on use and re-assessment. 6. To have an awareness of the physical, social and psychological effects of falls. Suggested Reading 1. National Service Framework for Older People (DoH) 2001.
