2 Making Correct Decisions ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS AND APPROPRIATE TEST SELECTION Orthopedic Track A Two Day Course Course Overview In clinical practice, physical therapists use tests and measures for a probabilistic approach to clinical decision making. This decision making approach requires that the tests and measures provide tangible value and can alter the post-test probability of diagnosis or prognosis. Recent evidence also dictates that selected tests should be used either early in the examination process to rule out contenders or late in the examination process to confirm hypotheses. Use of diagnostic accuracy values such as sensitivity, specificity, and positive likelihood ratios has improved our ability to discriminate tests strengths. The focus of this course is to provide those tests and measures and the appropriate order within an examination that improves probability of a correct diagnosis or outcome. Course Speaker: Chad Cook, PT, PhD, MBA, FAAOMPT A Professor and Vice Chief of Research at Duke University, Dr. Cook received his Bachelors of Science in Physical Therapy at Maryville University in 1990, a Masters of Business Administration in 1999, and a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) at Texas Tech University in He was certified as an orthopedic manual therapist in 2001, achieved APTA board certified orthopedic specialization in 2002, and received fellowship status at the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Therapy in Dr. Cook has published approximately 170 peer reviewed papers and has two textbooks in their 2nd edition: Orthopedic Manual Therapy: An evidence based approach and Orthopedic Physical Examination Tests: An evidence based approach and a third in its first edition. Dr. Cook has published several book chapters in other textbooks and has presented internationally at over 160 presentations/conferences. He is the former Editor in Chief of the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy and is a present Associate Editor of Manual Therapy and an editorial advisor for a number of other international journals. He has been a senior faculty and lecturer in peripheral and spine joint mobilization with Maitland Australian Physiotherapy Seminars for over 15 years. He is currently the treasurer of AAOMPT _bklt.indd 2
3 Dr. Cook has won numerous awards locally at Duke for teaching, is a recent winner of the OPTP/JMMT literature review award in 2003 and 2005, was the 2009 winner of the top educator award for the American Physical Therapy Association, is the 2008 recipient of the Helen Bradley career achievement award and is the 2005 winner of the J Warren Perry Distinguished Authorship Award. 4 Linked: Breathing & Postural Control Neurologic Track A Two-Day Course Course Overview This course will challenge therapists to make a paradigm shift and acknowledge the entire trunk as an integral component of normal postural control and movement strategies from the vocal folds on top, to the diaphragm in the middle, to the pelvic floor on the bottom. Through the use of a "soda pop can" model and novel research, the speaker will demonstrate how every muscle of the trunk has a simultaneous role in postural control and respiration. These muscles finely regulate intra-thoracic and intra-abdominal pressures in order to meet the constantly fluctuating, yet simultaneous demands of postural control, respiration, and internal organ function. This concept provides the cornerstone for the speaker's multi-system approach to evaluating and treating movement dysfunction. In-depth lab sessions are focused on breathing assessment, positioning and breathing strategies with movement. Patient cases (pediatric and adult) will be presented throughout the course to reinforce theoretical concepts. Course Speaker: Mary Massery, PT, DPT, DSc Dr. Massery received her BS in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University in 1977, her DPT from the University of the Pacific in 2004 and her DSc from Rocky Mountain University in Her publications and interests focus on linking motor behaviors to breathing and/or postural mechanics in both pediatric and adult patient populations. Dr. Massery has been invited to give over 800 professional presentations in 48 US states, 9 Canadian provinces, and 13 countries worldwide. Mary has delivered keynote/major addresses on topics such as cystic fibrosis and posture, neuropulmonary deficits, pectus excavatum (chest deformities), and connections between posture & breathing for the Royal Society of Medicine in London, England; the Australian & New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury Conference in Brisbane, Australia; the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists Meeting in Galway, Ireland; the International Seating Symposium in Vancouver, Canada; and the Conference on Posture and Mobility in Coventry, England; as well as numerous presentations at the American Physical Therapy Association s (APTA) Combined Sections Meetings across the USA. Recently, she was selected to present a full day post-conference program at the 2015 World Congress of Physical _bklt.indd 6
