3 Residency Mission Statement The mission of the Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation (BIR) and Texas Woman s University (TWU) in Dallas is to promote excellence in the lifespan of women s health across the continuum of care. This is accomplished through the evidence based care provided by physical therapists. The curriculum is based on the most recent Description of Specialty Practice (DSP) in Women s Health developed by the Specialty Council on Women s Health Physical Therapy. The program is coordinated between several Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation facilities and Texas Woman s University over the term of 13 months. The resident will receive a Certificate in Women s Health Physical Therapy from Texas Woman s University and a certificate of completion from the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation s TWU Residency in Women s Health. The resident will also complete coursework to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). The education and experience the resident gains during their clinical residency is designed to prepare the residents for the APTA specialist certification examination in women's health physical therapy to become a Women s Health Clinical Specialist (WCS). Eligibility The residents must be licensed to practice physical therapy in the state of Texas (by the start of the residency) and meet all requirements necessary for admission to Texas Woman s University School of Physical Therapy Graduate School. Residents must be eligible for employment according to Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation s hiring requirements and submit all application materials by Jan 15 th each application year. Requirements to Apply Completion of all required application documents Excellent communication skills Physical ability to perform examination and treatment procedures Psychological and social stability required for successful completion of the program Evidence of commitment to a career in Women s Health Clinical experience as a student in Women s Health or previous treatment experience or course work in Women s Health (such as CAPP PH1 course completion) Strong skills in scientific inquiry and writing Meet all requirements for employment at BIR and for admission at Texas Woman s University post-graduate program Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program Page 3
4 General Information Credentialing: Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation Outpatient Services Texas Woman s University Residency in Women s Health Physical Therapy is an APTA Credentialed Residency Program until April Length of Study: 13 months (55 weeks) with program entrance date June of each new residency program year. Resident will spend 6 months at BIR Landry and 6 months at BIR Plano Alliance. Rotations emphasize different specialty areas including, oncology, pelvic pain, obstetrics and aquatics. Salary: Residents will receive a salary as an employee of Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation Outpatient Services that is equivalent to new graduate physical therapists. Caseload: Residents caseload is adapted to allow time for didactic coursework, research, mentoring, presentations and projects. Benefits: Residents are eligible for benefits as an employee of Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation Outpatient Services/Select Medical. This includes employer supported health insurance, paid time-off (vacation, sick time, and organization holidays). This is not an all-inclusive list. Applicants are directed to the BIR site for a full description of benefits. Please note some benefits are up to the discretion of the manager and residents may not qualify for all benefits. Overview: The program is designed to provide residents with a minimum 13 month (55 week) intensive study in the area of Women s Health Physical Therapy, preparing the residents to sit and pass the Women s Health Specialty Exam administered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). The program includes direct patient care, mentoring time, didactic education, projects and presentations. There will be other opportunities for specialty presentations, public outreach, and research that may vary year to year. Onsite Interviews: Candidates will be notified by January 26, 2018 if they will be granted an onsite interview. 5 Didactic Curriculum TWU CURRICULUM FOR CLINICAL RESIDENCY IN WOMEN S HEALTH Length: 1 year, 3 semesters plus two weeks of lymphedema training from the Norton School Course fees: Resident is expected to pay tuition for TWU courses. Price will vary per year and on average can range from $1000 (In-state Texas tuition) to $3000 (Out-of-state tuition). Required onsite dates for courses June 2018: Norton lymphedema course (no cost to resident) 2 weeks in length June 1-10, 2018 July 2018 (summer 3 session): PT 6603 Female Anatomy for Physical Therapists, 3 credit hours Friday-Saturday onsite. July 13-14, 2018, July 27-28, 2018 Attendance onsite required Cadaver dissection August December 2018 (fall semester): Aug 27, December 14, 2018 PT 6613 Women s Health for Physical Therapists, 3 credit hours Internet based course- 100% PT 6623 Physical Therapist Management of Women s Health I, 3 credit hours: Taught onsite (TWU) September 7-9, 2018 and September Weekend format (2 three-day sessions Fri - Sun) Attendance onsite required Pelvic topics including internal examination and obstetrics January 2019-May 2019(spring semester) PT 6633 Physical Therapist Management of Women s Health II, 3 credit hours Hybrid onsite at TWU and Internet (49% internet, 51% onsite) Onsite component (1 Case Study presentation 3 Days onsite) April Resident will present case study in a Thursday evening program organized by TWU Upon successful completion, Resident will earn an Academic Certificate in Women s Health Physical Therapy from TWU. All credit bearing courses will appear on the resident s official transcript and may be used toward future academic degrees such as a transitional DPT, or a PhD. In addition, residents may apply university credits for licensure renewal in Texas (see Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program Page 5
6 Clinical Site: BIR - Tom Landry Center The Physical Therapy department at the Tom Landry Center provides specialized Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy for both Orthopedic and Neurological patient populations. Individuals are recovering from sport, work and life-changing injuries and illnesses. The Tom Landry Center offers: Aquatic Therapy Specialized Therapy Services (eg., Vestibular program, Speech) Neurologic Specialty Residency Orthopedic Specialty Residency One on one evaluation and treatment Use of the Biofeedback with latest software and Real-time Ultrasound Evidence based practice Therapists have advanced certifications in NCS, OCS, hand rehabilitation, lymphedema, athletic training, and NAIOMT. National monthly journal club focusing on women s health Association with an Academic Medical Center, working closely with physicians At the Landry Center, physical therapists provide treatment and education in all areas of women s health. The resident will be exposed to obstetrics during pregnancy and post-partum, as well as high-risk pregnancy. Residents will use clinical decision making and differential diagnosis to individualize treatment plans and educate women throughout their pregnancy. Also, the resident will be exposed to women newly diagnosed with osteoporosis, needing education and prevention, as well as those later in life, needing intervention after new fractures or falls. Patients with Fibromyalgia will receive both individualized aquatic and land therapy. While at the Landry Center, the resident will spend time learning and experiencing care through aquatic therapy in a warm water pool with obstetrics, fibromyalgia and appropriate orthopedic patients. As with all the centers, the resident will provide treatment for women and men with urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction/pain. The Landry Center offers the resident exposure to a multitude of specialties with an opportunity to explore co-treating patients as appropriate. 7 Clinical Site: BIR Plano Alliance The physical therapy department at Plano Alliance provides Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy for the orthopedic and neurologic population. Plano also offers wound care, oncology and lymphedema. Plano Alliance offers: Aquatic Therapy High caseload of patients with pelvic pain One on one evaluations Evidenced based practice Participation in the national women s health journal club Biofeedback for pelvic floor Association with academic facility working closely with physicians Upper and lower extremity as well as head and neck lymphedema treatment with certified lymphedema therapists. Participation in pre-op breast class Colorectal pelvic floor Advanced voiding dysfunctions Breast cancer and other oncology diagnoses At Plano Alliance, physical therapists provide treatment in all areas of women s health. The resident will have particular exposure in the areas pelvic pain, lymphedema and osteoporosis. The resident will perform and be mentored in manual lymph drainage on patients with lymphedema from a variety of causes. As with all the sites, residents will also provide treatment for women and men with urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic pain and other pelvic floor dysfunctions. The resident will use the latest evidence as the basis for differential diagnosis and clinical decision making that will guide their treatment with a wide range of women s health diagnoses. Plano Alliance offers the resident exposure to a multitude of specialties with an opportunity to explore co-treating patients as appropriate. Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program Page 7
8 Main Clinical Faculty Valerie L. Bobb PT, DPT, WCS, ATC Residency Director Valerie attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduated with a Master s of Physical Therapy in She earned a BA in Psychology in 1998 from Marquette and became a Certified Athletic Trainer in Valerie received her tdpt in Physical Therapy at TWU in December Valerie s early career focused on pregnancy and the female athlete/dancer. She worked heavily with female athletes in the clinic, at the ballet studio and while working as an athletic trainer at an all-girl s high school. She also spent 4 years as a secondary investigator looking at the Prevalence of the Female Athlete Triad in High School Athletes and Students. Valerie joined Baylor in 2008 and has expanded her practice from basic pregnancy to high-risk pregnancy, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, fecal incontinence and constipation. She also volunteers at child birth preparedness classes. Valerie holds an adjunct faculty position at TWU and instructs post-graduate courses related to the residency program and women s health curriculum in the entry level coursework. Valerie s professional service includes an appointment to the re-validation committee for the Description of Specialty Practice for Women s Health, serving as an instructor for the CAPP-OB courses with the SoWH and previously served 5 years on the CAPP-OB committee, 3 as the committee chair. Valerie is currently co-authoring a chapter in a medical book on pelvic floor therapy in posterior hip dysfunctions. D Andrea Gadberry PT, LAT D Andrea attended Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and graduated with a B.S. in Physical Therapy in She earned a B.S. in Biology from Tarleton State University and received her athletic trainer s license in D Andrea has been at Baylor University Medical Center since At that time she joined the staff with the primary goal of starting the aquatic therapy program at the Landry Center and working in the sports medicine area. She has experience working with many athletes, from the weekend athlete to many professional teams. D Andrea developed an interest in Women s Health issues and pursued classes to expand her Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program Page 8
9 knowledge in this area. She has developed her skills and interest in women s health issues, primarily incontinence and chronic pain dysfunction. D Andrea also has an interest in breast health and oncology, especially ovarian and breast cancers. D Andrea professional service includes being active in the Education section s Leadership Conference, reviewing article submissions for the Education Section and CSM submissions. D Andrea also is currently part of a study researching the preferred duration of terminal internship for entry-level education. Lorien Hathaway PT, DPT, WCS, CLT Lorien Hathaway PT, DPT, WCS, CLT is the team leader of the women s health/pelvic physical therapy program at Baylor Alliance in Plano, Texas. Lorien has been a practicing physical therapist for over 20 years and received her Physical therapy degree from Oklahoma University. Lorien graduated with her tdpt in from TWU 2014 after completing the BIR-TWU Residency in Women s Health in She is a residency trained; board-certified specialist in Women s Health Physical Therapy and specializes in treating individuals with a variety of diagnoses including pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain. Lorien has a special interest in treating women and men with pelvic pain. Additionally, she is a certified Lymphedema therapist. Lorien is passionate about education and holds an adjunct faculty position at Texas Women s University in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program/Advanced Certificate in Women s Health. She gives presentations locally to physicians and community support groups and nationally within Baylor/Select Medical Institute for Rehabilitation. Lorien s professional service includes serving as an ABPTRFE site reviewer and she is currently co-authoring a chapter in a medical book on pelvic floor therapy in posterior hip dysfunctions. Lorien is also an accredited Partner in Care for the MS Society. Stacy Sutton PT, DPT, WCS, CLT Stacy Sutton PT, DPT, WCS, CLT is a member of the women s health/pelvic physical therapy program at Baylor Alliance in Plano, Texas. Stacy knew in PT school that she wanted to work in Women s Health. She graduated from TWU s Houston campus with her DPT in 2013 and immediately went on to complete the BIR-TWU Residency in Women s Health. Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program Page 9
10 Upon completing the Residency, Stacy moved to Austin and started a Women s Health Program with emphasis on treating orthopedic, lymphatic, and pelvic dysfunction in patients with a current or previous diagnosis of breast cancer. While Stacy enjoyed Austin, she decided to return to Dallas to give back to the program where she started, to mentor in the Residency Program. Stacy is a board certified Women s Health Therapist and has a passion for treating men and women with a variety of diagnoses relating to pelvic floor dysfunction, including dyspareunia, voiding dysfunction, post-surgical pain, and urinary and fecal incontinence. Educational Faculty: TWU Mary Thompson, PT, PhD, GCS, Professor Mary is a professor at TWU in their entry level curriculum and the coordinator of the post-professional programs for the Dallas campus. Mary has been integral in starting the residency in women s health and the partnership between TWU and BIR. Mary is interested in conducting both qualitative and quantitative studies in areas of concern to older adults and therapists who work with them. Mary continues to maintain a clinical practice seeing older patients with a variety of problems. Her teaching interests are focused in geriatrics, women s health, health promotion/illness prevention, psychosocial aspects of care, and health care delivery systems. Mary is especially interested in osteoporosis, balance and fall prevention and caregiver issues as it relates to older women. Women s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program Page 10
