4 Speakers & Course Descriptions Saturday, April 24, 2010 Rehabilitation of the Disorders of the Shoulder & Knee 6.00 Contact Hours Terry R. Malone, PT, EdD, ATC, FAPTA received his baccalaureate degree in 1973 from Bluffton College. He received his Master of Science in Physical Therapy and a Doctorate in Education from Duke University. From he coordinated Sports Physical Therapy at the University of Indianapolis. He also served as an Associate Professor and Director of the Program from In 1987 he returned to Duke University as Executive Director of the Sports Medicine Center. In 1993, he became Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Physical Therapy at the University of Kentucky and is now a full Professor there. Terry is a certified athletic trainer as well as a licensed physical therapist, and serves as a faculty member in both the Medical School and the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky. He is an active member of the Sports Physical Therapy Special Interest Group of the American Physical Therapy Association, the National Athletic Trainers Association, and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. By virtue of his publications and contributions to the profession, he is considered to be one of the premier speakers and most sought after clinicians in his field. Course Description: This course will address the multiplicity of problems confronting the clinician dealing with rehabilitation of the disorders of the shoulder and knee. These patients demand an attention to detail which is frequently not provided. This course will attempt to contextualize the learner to the historical development of the majority of commonplace procedures utilized in the clinic today through historical presentation, as well as developing an appreciation of the relevant literature of yesterday and today. It is hoped that personal opinions will be shared by participants, thus providing a fertile garden for exchange. The course is designed to allow a rich appreciation for the management of selected shoulder and knee conditions. Saturday Lunch, April 24, 2010 WANTED: Your Leadership to Achieve Practitioner of Choice by 2020 for Physical Therapy 1.00 Contact Hours Letha Zook, PT, EdD., received her education as a physical therapist from University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After working in the field for several years, she returned to continue her education at New York University where she attained a Masters of Science in Pathokinesiology in Her doctoral degree is from Columbia University in Applied Physiology. In 1989, Dr. Zook began her academic career in the Physical Therapy program at Long Island University. She held positions in California State University Northridge and at Charles Drew University in Los Angeles before coming to Wheeling Jesuit University in 1998 as the Director of Physical Therapy. She has been responsible for taking the Department of Physical Therapy through accreditation and transitioned it to a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. In July 2005 she was selected to become the Academic Dean for the University and in 2008 became Academic Vice President. She has served as the President of the West Virginia Physical Therapy Association from 2001 to Sunday, April 25, 2010 Session A Introduction to Physical Therapy for Women s Health Issues 1.50 Contact Hours Marnie Z. Clemens, PT, DPTP, OCS, WCS has a private practice specializing in women s health, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and chronic pain in men and women. She sees a variety of conditions in these areas including pelvic pain, fecal and bladder incontinence, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular disorders, headaches, pre/post pregnancy, breast cancer/cancer rehab, and balance and vestibular disorders. Dr. Clemens received her Physical Therapy degree from West Virginia University and her Doctorate degree in Physical therapy from Chatham University in Pittsburgh. She also holds a degree in Psychology from Marshall University. She is a Board Certified Specialist in women s health and also in orthopedics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. She is also the state representative for the Section on Women s Health of the APTA. Course Objectives: Describe common conditions seen by a women s health physical therapist; Understand the basic anatomy and function of the pelvic floor; Identify important aspects of a pelvic floor exam; Describe appropriate physical therapy interventions for women s health issues.

5 Speakers & Course Descriptions Session B Update on Hip, Knee and Shoulder Arthroplasty: Current State of Evidence 3.50 Contact Hours Corrie Mancinelli, PT, PhD has been a practicing Physical Therapist for over 20 years. She joined the faculty at West Virginia University in 1993 after receiving her PhD in Anatomy. She currently oversees much of the anatomy, kinesiology and geriatric course content. Dr. Mancinelli s clinical expertise includes arthrosis and joint replacement, adult reconstructive surgery, balance and falls in the elderly and general orthopaedics. She has an active clinical practice at WVU and she is the Geriatric Section liaison for the WV chapter. Course Objectives: Discuss recent surgical advances in hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty; Review special tests that apply with joint replacement; Review the current evidence for approaches to rehabilitation following hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty; Become familiar with outcomes assessment tools available for joint replacement populations. Session C What It Takes to Make a PT/PTA Team Work Well Together 3.50 Contact Hours Rick Stocker, PTA, BA, CEAS is the current WV PTA Caucus Representative on the WVPTA. Rick received his AAS in Physical Therapist Assistant from Marshall Community and Technical College (MCTC) in 1999 and Bachelor of Arts from Marshall University in He currently works at St. Mary s Medical Center in Huntington, WV in the outpatient department, and is a Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist. He participates with new employee orientation in ergonomics and back safety and performs ergonomic assessments within the medical center. Rick is an Adjunct Instructor at MCTC and APTA Certified Clinical Instructor. Kelly Terry, PT, DPT, MS, ATC received her DPT from Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA in She received her MS in Health and Physical Education in 1998 and a BA in Athletic Training in 1996 from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. She is the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education at Marshall Community and Technical College in Huntington, WV. She is an APTA credentialed clinical instructor and continues to practice clinically part time for Genesis Rehab Services in assisted living and long term care settings. She is actively involved in student recruitment and retention at MCTC. Course Objectives: Understand the preferred relationship between the PT and PTA; Understand similarity and difference in background and training of PT s and PTA s; Differentiate between the scopes of work for the PT/PTA; How to foster collaboration and communication between the PT s & PTA s. Session D Overview of Spinal Cord Injury with Focus on Treatment & Shoulder Preservation 2.00 Contact Hours Bryanna L. Ordiway, PTA attended Ohio Valley College, Parkersburg, WV and received an associate degree in Liberal Studies and graduated from the Physical Therapy Assistant Program at Fairmont State College in She currently works for Healthsouth Mountainview Regional Rehabilitation Hospital in Morgantown, WV. From , Bryanna was a Physical Therapist Assistant Spinal Cord/Amputee Team Leader. She also works as a clinical instructor for PTA Student Affiliations, Laboratory Assistant for WVU PT students, and Adjunct Instructor for Fairmont State University PTA students. She is also a member of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association and has certification in CPR/First Aid and APTA CI Credentialed. Karin E. Savage, DPT received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pre-Medicine Biology from the California University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Slippery Rock University. She has worked for Healthsouth Mountainview Regional Rehab Hospital in Morgantown, WV in both the inpatient division and outpatient division. Karin was an SCI/Orthopedic /and Amputee Team Leader from She has also served as an Adjunct Instructor for WVU PT students, SCI course and Stroke Lab Course and as Lab Assistant for Fairmont State PTA students. Karin is a member of the APTA and National Spinal Cord Injury Association and has certification in CPR/First Aid, Healthsouth FCE, SaeboFlex, and is APTA CI Credentialed. Course Objectives: To Provide the Clinician with a working knowledge of: The rehab process for individuals with SCI; Various treatment strategies to utilize with individuals with SCI; Shoulder preservation techniques for the individual with SCI.

6 WVPT PAC Presents Michael Griffin A Two-Time World Magic Award Winning Master of Escape Saturday evening during the conference, the WVPTA PAC is sponsoring a magic show entertainment by Michael Griffin, a two-time world Magic Award winning Master of Escape. His performance is unique, one-of-a kind adrenaline-rush infused program featuring escapeography. The evening cocktail reception and show will be open to all who attend the conference and is included in the registration fee. A cash beer and wine bar will be provided along with heavy appetizers (enough for dinner). Donations will be solicited from WVPTA members to support the PAC. Non-members donations will be used to support the WVPTA scholarship for PT students to attend the APTA Student Conclave held in the fall of the year. The WVPTA has provided $200 for the last three years to student PTs who apply for funding. We hope to increase this line item for 2010 with support received during this event. For the first time in several years, the conference will provide a family oriented dinner and entertainment during the conference. Bring your family and join other physical therapists who want to support the Association and have a good time doing it. Goal: Raise $2000 for the WVPTA PAC for candidates for Primary and General Elections and $500 for Student Scholarships for the APTA Student Conclave 2010 Conference Location The Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV. The resort is located just 2 miles off Interstate 79 at exit 91 and is accessible from all major metropolitan areas within a 4-hour driving radius. Stonewall Resort is a little over one hour north of Charleston, WV and 2 hours south of Pittsburgh, PA. The resort is an easy drive from airports in Charleston and Clarksburg, West Virginia. By car take the Roanoke exit (91) from I- 79 and follow the signs to Stonewall Resort. Lodging Reservations There are a limited number of rooms being held at the Stonewall Resort at $210 single and $150 double. This rate includes two meals per day starting with dinner on the night of arrival and ending with lunch the day of departure, morning and afternoon break food and selected resort activities.
