Study of the structure and function of the human body. Topics include cells, tissues, integumentary system, skeletal system, muscular system, and nervous system. Prerequisites: (BIO156 or BIO181 with a grade of "C" or better) or (one year high school biology course with a grade of "C" or better). (CHM130 or higher numbered CHM prefixed course) or (one year of high school chemistry) suggested but not required. 4 BIO 201 COURSE POLICIES WITH DR. FERNANDEZ 1. Students who fail to attend the first scheduled class meeting, or to contact the instructor regarding absence before the first scheduled class meeting may, at the option of the instructor, be withdrawn. [General Catalog, Attendance, AR 2.3.2] 2. It is the student s responsibility to read, understand and abide by all of the information in the course syllabus. 3. As a student of Glendale Community College, you should be aware of the policies and procedures in the current GCC General Catalog and Student Handbook available on the GCC website at 4. Attendance is expected at all scheduled lectures and laboratories, but does not count towards the course grade. Lecture attendance is recorded for the purpose of documenting the last day of attendance in the case a student drops or withdraws from the course. 5. It is the responsibility of the student to request and arrange for a makeup exam. Opportunities for makeup exams will depend upon the material missed and the circumstances for missing the exam. In general, make-up exams should be completed before the regularly scheduled exam is returned to the class which is usually the next class period after the exam was administered. Make-up examinations are administered in the Testing and Disabilities Services building room TDS 118. Students taking makeup exams must bring a GCC picture ID, a scantron sheet and a pencil. Call (623) for make-up testing center hours and further information. 6. Generally, missed laboratory exercises cannot be made-up. 7. Only individuals enrolled in this course may attend lecture or lab. Unless prior arrangements have been made, you may not attend another lab section or the lab of another instructor. 8. Practicals are laboratory exams. Generally, there are no makeup practicals. 9. In general, and if necessary, and if necessary, it is the responsibility of the student to drop the course before the deadline for student initiated withdrawal. Students should use the Student Information System (SIS) to withdraw from a course. The instructor may drop a student for excessive absences or missed exams or practicals. After the deadline specified in the current GCC course schedule, you will need instructor approval to withdraw. If approved for withdrawal, students receive a grade of "W" if the current course average is 60% or better, or a "Y" if the course average is less than 60%. Note: grades of Y count as an F in the GPA until the class is retaken and a higher grade is earned. 10. If you have a disability that you feel may have some impact on your work in this class and for which you may require accommodations, notify the Disability Services and Resources office ( ), located in TDS Preservatives are used in some lab specimens. If you have concerns about these preservatives please consult with your physician. 12. Students must wear appropriate safety apparatus (e.g., gloves and goggles) in lab during dissection. See the documents titled Maricopa County Community College District Voluntary Assumption of Risk and Release of Liability and Safety Measures for Students in General Biology Classes for details. 13. No models, specimens or parts of specimens may be taken out of the lab. 14. Cheating and plagiarism are not tolerated and will result in a score of zero. Additional disciplinary action may be taken in accordance with college policy. 15. Academic grievances should be discussed first with the instructor, and then if needed the department chair, and then if needed the dean of instruction. The college policy for student grievances can be found at Keep all graded exam scantron sheets, practicals and lab exercises as a record of your grades. If you feel your grade has been miscalculated, bring the graded material when you request a check of the grade record. You have one week after the return of your graded work to request review of your score. 17. The class will be notified by the instructor of any changes in course requirements or policies. Course content and exam dates may vary from this syllabus to meet the needs of a particular class. 18. You may not use cell phones or other electronic devices during lecture or laboratory.
