5 Medicvox Training Program As part of our service to physical rehabilitation professionals, Atlas Medic is proud to announce the addition of educational opportunities to our technical support and product line. In 2012, more than 1500 professionals enrolled in training programs and activities held in Quebec. We are now able to present the Medicvox training program to our Alberta and Manitoba customers as well. Staying true to our reputation, Atlas Medic continues to contribute to the advancement, dissemination, and exchange of knowledge in the rehabilitation arena. We work collaboratively with experienced trainers, to bring high caliber programs that will meet your expectations and continuing education requirements. This publication provides detailed information on each session, as well as registration instructions. Seating is limited, so if you see something that piques your interest, please register early. Mr. Courchesne serves as medical coordinator for the Rouge et Or program, and is also a part-time lecturer in Laval University s Physiotherapy department. He is also certified in Kinesiotaping. 9 MEDICVOX LUMBAR STABILIZATION: A Quick Guide Exercise Program Chantal Gendron PT, FCAMPT Ms. Gendron was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology (1984) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiotherapy (1987) at Laval University, following which she began practice in the private sector. For the past 12 years, she has worked at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier. A Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT) since 2002, she has also pursued further education through numerous continuing education courses. At Laval University, she is responsible for implementing and teaching 5 credits toward the Bachelors degree in Kinesiology, and is also regularly involved in clinical education for the integrated diploma-master s degree in Physiotherapy. LUMBAR STABILIZATION: A Quick Guide Exercise Program This course is intended for any healthcare professional who wishes to acquire a better understanding of the concept of lumbar stability. The participant will be provided with an array of exercises that have been validated by the scientific literature, including progressions and variations, which will allow for customization of interventions for a variety of patients. COURSE OBJECTIVES Assess muscular deficits and proprioceptive and erroneous patterns of movement in a patient suffering from low back pain, based on the scientific literature. Develop the ability to devise a program of complete and specific exercises for any patient with low back pain. Understand, observe, and interpret inadequate patterns of movement. Establish the links between lower limb proprioceptive and muscular deficits, and the incidence of back pain. Review training principles such as those adopted by the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine). Standardize various exercises and verify their relevance. Try different control and strengthening exercises for the thoracolumbar spine and the lower quadrant. 10 MEDICVOX Assessment and Training of Muscle Function with a Handheld Dynamometer: to Obtain Convincing Evidence-Based Data. Specific Training Objectives Upon completion of this training, each participant will be able to: Define muscle strength and the associated psychological, anatomic (biomechanical), and physiologic concepts. Describe and understand the specific features, benefits, and disadvantages of using the most common models of handheld dynamometers currently available on the market. Describe the concepts of impairment, limitation, restriction, validity, reliability, and pain in the specific context of assessing muscle function for all types of clients and in all practice settings. List and explain the practical considerations in choosing and utilizing a handheld dynamometer in order to assess muscle strength impairments in different muscle groups. Use a handheld dynamometer and assess the strength of all muscle groups in the upper and lower limbs. Integrate the concepts taught, in order to demonstrate a critical attitude toward the results of one s own assessments, with a view to implementing, in the participant s own workplace, a standardized method of assessing isometric muscle strength for all types of clients and in all practice settings. Learning Methods Formal lectures with interactions intended to stimulate exchanges, critical thinking, and discussions between professor and participants. Practical muscle strength assessment sessions using a handheld dynamometer. If possible, in-class assessment of a patient or participant presenting with muscle impairments. Detailed course notes will be provided, including several pictures with complete descriptions of subject/assessor positioning, and an exhaustive, updated bibliography. Hébert CD, PhD, PT Major Hébert is a physiotherapist on the Canadian Forces Primary Reserve List. He served with the Regular Forces from 1982 to 1996, on appointments with various units in Canada and overseas. Upon completion of his training at the University of Montréal in 1982, he went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Biomedical Sciences from that institution, in He also received a PhD in Experimental Medicine at Laval University in Dr. Hébert contributed to a book chapter on functional MRI and wrote two books on muscle strength. He has published over 130 scientific articles, including major research papers. In addition to teaching positions at the Universities of Montréal and Sherbrooke, he has been a clinical professor (since 1990) and Director of research in the Radiology department at Laval University s Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Hébert is an associate researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Rehabilitation and Social Integration (CIRRIS). His research does focus, in part, on the variables that best explain and predict musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries in the military population as well as factors limiting soldiers functional performance. He has also developed expertise in the assessment of upper limb MSK pathologies using novel interventional magnetic resonance imaging techniques. A recipient of several research funds as both lead investigator and co-investigator, Dr. Hébert has supervised and co-supervised postgraduate students. Since May 2000, he has held the post of National Physiotherapy Training Director for the Canadian Forces Health Services headquarters, Medical Policy Directorate.
