1 Program of Instruction Course Syllabus Course Title: Course Duration: 330 hours Program: Firefighting Course Prerequisites: Member of a fire department. Course Description: is designed to give new firefighters the practical and cognitive training needed to operate safely and effectively on the fireground. The Firefighter II Academy exceeds the requirements outlined by the Illinois Officer of the State Fire Marshal for entrylevel firefighter training. Academy focuses on an intense hands-on approach to firefighter, which promotes both skill competency and an understanding of the fireground. Students complete numerous fireground-speed evolutions, and rolling responses, which encourage them to apply their skills to a variety of scenarios. Course Policies: Safety Policy: Students shall understand and follow all instructions pertaining to operational safety, as stated by instructors or as written in course materials. Instructors and students shall be mindful of safety at all times. Conduct judged to be unsafe shall be grounds for dismissal from the course. Academic Integrity Policy: IFSI has the responsibility for maintaining academic integrity so as to protect the quality of the education provided through its courses, and to protect those who depend upon our integrity. It is the responsibility of the student to refrain from infractions of academic integrity, from conduct that may lead to suspicion of such infractions, and from conduct that aids others in such infractions. Any violation of the code of conduct is grounds for immediate dismissal from the course. Grading Policy: Decisions regarding certificates of course completion shall be made solely by the lead instructor of the course. All grading of exams shall be conducted by qualified instructors. All grading of practical exercises shall be based upon the standards set by the regulatory agency referenced in the course material and IFSI. Course Syllabus Page 1 of 12
2 Course Requirements: Satisfactory attendance per Academy SOG s Satisfactory completion of Mid-Term and Final Practicals Passing score of 70% on all quizzes (one re-test allowed per quiz) Passing score of 70% on the state exam References: Firefighter II IRM, Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal, Essentials V Curriculum, Fire Protection Publications, Firefighter s Handbook Curriculum, Delmar Thomson Learning, 2004 NFPA Standard 1001 Evaluation Strategy: The instructor will observe individual student participation in the group exercises. Quizzes are conducted on a weekly basis. A written test is conducted by the State Fire Marshals Office upon completion of the course on Friday of week six. Practical skills test are conducted at the mid point and at the completion of the course. Course Content: Module: 1 Title: Orientation At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain basic line and staff functions and the basic function of various types of fire companies. Module: 2 Title: Health, Safety At the conclusion of this module, the student will describe or identify major contributing factors to firefighter injuries in the station, enroot to emergency calls, and on the scene. Module: 3 Title: PPE At the conclusion of this module, the student will demonstrate the proper donning and doffing of all PPE assigned and will safely operate an SCBA, as well as perform emergency procedures.. 3 Module: 4 Title: Fire Behavior At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain principles of fire behavior, and how it may affect fireground procedures. Module: 5 Title: Building Construction At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to describe common building construction types, classes and materials; in additions s/he will be able to describe common construction hazards that contribute to Firefighter injuries and fatalities Module: 6 Title: Fire Hose At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain features of fire hose and appliances, as well as factors affecting their use Module: 7 Title: Water Supply At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to explain principles of both hydranted and non-hydranted water supply. Module: 8 Title: Fire Streams At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to describe the common types of nozzles, sizes and their flow rates; in addition s/he will be able to demonstrate proper stream application techniques for various fire situations. Module: 9 Title: Ground Ladders At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain proper procedures for utilizing fire service ladders. Module: 10 Title: Ventilation At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain principles and procedures of ventilation. Course Syllabus Page 3 of 12
4 Module: 11 Title: Forcible Entry At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain the principles and procedures of forcible entry. Module: 12 Title: Portable Extinguishers At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain the uses and operation of portable extinguishers. Module: 13 Title: Ropes and Knots At the conclusion of this module, the student will demonstrate the proper techniques for tying ropes and knots. Module: 14 Title: Fire Control At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain the principles of fire control. At the conclusion of this module, the student will explain principles and procedures of loss control. Module: 15 Title: Alarm, Detection, and Suppression Systems At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to describe the common types of alarm, detection and suppression systems and their components; in addition s/he will be able to provide a brief description of their operation. Module: 16 Title: Firefighter Survival At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to demonstrate specialized techniques for removing a down firefighter from a variety of entrapment situations. 5 Module: 17 Title: Communications At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to effective communication on the fire ground using a variety of communication methods and equipment. Module: 18 Title: Fire Cause and Origin At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to describe measures that first arriving companies can take to protect evidence of cause and origin for the initial fire investigator. Module: 19 Title: LPG and Flammable Liquids At the conclusion of this module, the student will be able to describe the general properties of LPG and Class B fuels and demonstrate proper extinguishment techniques for fires involving specific products. Module: 20 Title: Public Education and Prevention At the conclusion of this module, the student will research and present information on a specified topic as a member of a working group.
