1 THE SAAD CENTRE FOR RADIOGRAPHY OPEN FOR BUSINESS The University for business and the professions
2 THE SAAD CENTRE FOR RADIOGRAPHY OPEN FOR BUSINESS The Department of Radiography at City University London has a mission to lead in radiography education and research. City is one of the largest providers of qualified radiographers in the UK offering BSc courses in both therapeutic and diagnostic radiography. We also have a wide range of increasingly popular postgraduate programmes. Our hi-tech skills centre, The Saad Centre for Radiography Clinical Skills Education, simulates a real hospital environment for our students, giving them access to the type of equipment that they will find in a real life healthcare setting. It s unmatched by any other university in the UK. The Centre has opened up new ways of teaching and assessing our students. They learn and practice on a CT scanner, digital imaging system, radiotherapy treatment planning and virtual delivery systems, x-ray, fluoroscopy and ultrasound equipment all before they go and work directly with patients. They develop knowledge, skills and abilities which enhance their practical learning with our hospital placement partners where they spend 50 percent of their training. The Centre provides a calm, modern and simulated clinical environment without the pressure and constraints always present in a busy hospital. Radiographers of the future will have a greatly expanded role, increasingly taking on tasks traditionally confined to the medically qualified radiologist or clinical oncologist. Instead of just delivering a scan or treatment, they will also make vital decisions such as which examination to perform, advise on procedures, report on diagnostic images, provide treatment progress reports, counsel patients, and prescribe certain radiotherapy treatments. This self contained centre comprises seven specialised rooms housing state-of-the-art radiography equipment and systems. The Saad Centre for Radiography was made possible by donations of funds and state-of-the-art equipment from The Saad Group, a longstanding partner of City University London. Saad's businesses range from contracting and development to medical services and investment. The company is also active in the community, founding and sponsoring a number of charitable initiatives focused on healthcare and education, which aim to care for those in need and provide opportunity for future generations. City University London is also grateful to the other main supporters of the Centre, including Varian Inc, The Wolfson Foundation and Barts and The London Charity.
3 Ultrasound Unit, supplied by Siemens Siemens CT Scanner Siemens CT scanner Ultrasound Unit Vertix General x-ray unit Vertix General x-ray unit, supplied by Siemens Planmeca panoramic dental x-ray, supplied by Xograph We are making these outstanding facilities at the Saad Centre available to a wider audience, outside of the University and radiography teaching department. Potential applications range through Archaeology, Anthropology, Biology, Community and Police Sciences to Dentistry, Palaeontology and Veterinary Services and many more. You can benefit from: Digital images of objects to reveal structure, composition, layers and flaws. Images of dry, post mortem or forensic material for research, analysis and pathology. Production of multi media material and teaching aids. Inter-disciplinary programmes for health professionals. Research projects in other health sciences. Non-health research such as Food, Engineering, Design and Art. Our aim is to provide flexible and cost-effective access to this type of facility so you can benefit from: Highly professional staff available to guide you through the equipment and systems, their applications and opportunities. Access throughout the year (outside of teaching times). Competitive hourly rates for use. For more information on our excellent facilities and to discuss how your organisation could benefit from using the Saad Centre please contact: Robin Davies Business Development Manager Telephone: robin.davies.1@city.ac.uk We welcome visits to the Centre to explore the options available to you, without obligation.
4 The specialised facilities available in the Saad Centre include: COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) SCANNER WITH SIMULATION SOFTWARE This full-size complex machine uses x-rays to scan the body and rapidly creates images of multi-directional slices through the body from which 3-D images can be built. Enhanced volume rendering software enables these views to be manipulated to reveal different layers and structures. CT scanners are used by both diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers. They either identify numerous life-threatening conditions - such as brain damage, pulmonary embolisms, arterial sclerosis, liver disease and aneurysms - or provide simulation of radiotherapy treatments, from which plans for optimising the delivery of radiation treatment to cancer patients can be made. GENERAL AND DENTAL X-RAY X-rays enable us to see through tissues to examine bones and cavities and locate foreign objects. Used by diagnostic radiographers they generate the classic 2D black and white x-ray image which, with our modern digital technology, can be viewed and captured immediately on a computer screen; faster and more flexible than film. Our Panoramic Dental x-ray unit provides a full jaw scan in a single digital image. FLUOROSCOPY The fluoroscopy unit uses x-rays to give a 2D moving (real-time) image on a monitor which allows investigations of the digestive system and helps guide a range of invasive procedures such as biopsies. Mounted on an adjustable full body trolley, it can be positioned for a variety of procedures. This equipment is used primarily by diagnostic radiographers and radiologists. ULTRASOUND AND ULTRASIM UNITS This piece of equipment is perhaps most well known for obstetric scans and monitoring foetal development, growth and activity throughout pregnancy. It is also used to investigate cardiac, vascular, abdominal and gynaecological complaints and, unlike x-ray and CT, uses high frequency sound waves from the tissues to produce real-time images of the organs of the body. Our Ultrasim unit provides a wide range of simulated training programmes using a mannequin and specialised software. DIGITAL IMAGING This 12 station unit takes scans and x-ray data and allows students and users to manipulate the images. Special software enables images to be adjusted for contrast, position and angle of view, perspective, size and clarity. RADIOTHERAPY TREATMENT PLANNING SYSTEM Utilising the latest version of the system our unit has 8 stations with monitors and the ability to display single or multiple scans to a group of students or users. This highly complex software enables a 2D or 3D image from a simulator or CT scanner to be manipulated and moved in order to plan treatment which will maximise the radiation dose to the tumour within the patient, while minimising the dose to the surrounding healthy tissue. Choices regarding patient position, radiation beam energy, intensity, shape and size must be made and when all the information is put together, the planning computer can help to work out the best positioning of the radiotherapy beams. VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT RADIOTHERAPY TRAINING UNIT (VERT) This virtual environment with sophisticated 3D projection and specially developed software utilises a total immersion system for the user to create a virtual patient and radiotherapy treatment department. Special viewing equipment and gloves, combined with an actual Linear Accelerator control unit, enable users to deliver radiotherapy treatment plans and monitor results in a virtual context whilst being observed by up to 6 other participants. Integrating the scan data and treatment planning process, it allows students to follow the patient pathway from diagnosis to treatment in a controlled and unpressured learning environment. The equipment can be utilised for any virtual reality software programme currently available or in development. Our students spend 50 percent of the academic year in clinical placements with our partners and their academic study is split between time spent in the Saad Centre and lectures. Therefore our outstanding facilities, equipment and systems are available for other users and suitable for a wide range of applications. Examples include: continuing professional development programmes (CPD), short courses, inter-disciplinary training, research, forensic science, archaeology, anthropology, nonmedical projects and commercial opportunities.
