Rehabilitation Is: specialized healthcare dedicated to improving, maintaining or restoring physical strength, cognition and mobility with maximized results. Typically, rehabilitation helps people gain greater independence after illness, injury or surgery. From HealthSouth website Rehabilitation is also vital for patients post-stroke or other neurological diseases

Forms of Rehabilitation Orthopedic: For restoring function to the joints, tendons, ligaments, bones and fascia of the musculoskeletal system. Methods include joint mobilization, stretching exercises, strength training, work hardening and gait re-training Neurological: Helping people who have had strokes, brain injuries, balance disorders and more live as normal a life as possible. Geriatric: Help restore mobility, relieve pain, increase fitness and compensate for physical limitations Pediatric: Helping heal and improve functioning for a wide range of impairments in children, including developmental and birth issues, injuries and trauma Cardiopulmonary: Help people with heart and lung disease strengthen their organ function and build energy and endurance

The Physiology of Rehabilitation Therapeutic Effects of Low-Frequency Microcurrent According to R. Voll, M.D. (Germany) Spasmolysis of blood and lymph vessels & hollow organs Improve circulation of blood and lymph Tonification of elastic fibers to improve organ functions Reduction of inflammatory processes in the body Reduction of degenerative processes through promoting proper function of connective tissues Restoration of healthy nerve function through polarization effects Stimulating ATP production for muscle relaxation and healing

How Microcurrent Can Enhance Rehabilitation Spasmolysis of blood and lymph vessels & hollow organs: Promotes tissues healing Improve circulation of blood and lymph: Relieves stagnation, carry away waste metabolites for detoxification of injured region Tonification of elastic fibers to improve organ functions: Improve health, help soften tight and rigid tissues Reduction of inflammatory processes in the body: Reduce pain and degeneration Reduction of degenerative processes through promoting proper function of connective tissues: Restoring electrical function of connective tissues is at root of rehab Restoration of healthy nerve function through polarization effects: Essential for alleviating paralysis Stimulating ATP production for muscle relaxation and healing: Softening chronically tight muscles for all kinds of rehab benefits

Muscles and ATP The energy source for muscles is ATP adenosine triphosphate. Active muscles consume billions of ATP molecules per second. ATP is created in the mitochondria of cells, and an excess of what is needed by the body is produced ATP is not stable, and so cannot be well stored. The body converts excess ATP into creatine phosphate. When muscles get active they secrete the protein myosin, which breaks down creatine into available ATP for use by the exercising muscle. Exercising muscles use up their store of CP and ATP within about 15 minutes, so must be able to keep creating it to stay active.

Microcurrent and ATP 95% of ATP production is aerobic, and requires abundant oxygen. That can be in low supply for injured or post-stroke patients who cannot vigorously exercise. This can lead to muscle weakness, debility and degeneration. The application of low-frequency microcurrent to cells has been shown to increase ATP production up to 400% according to a Belgian study by Cheng et al. This is a significant benefit in accelerating rehabilitation. Microcurrent therapy has also been shown to promote the movement of charged calcium, sodium and chloride ions into cells through voltage-sensitive ion channels in the cell membranes. This is also associated with increased repair and inter-cellular communication functions.

Kinetic Microcurrent Methods Microcurrents with Motion Assisted range of motion exercises Meridian stretching Wheelchair exercises Russian stimulation / microcurrent combo Electro-massage Qi Gong Tui-Na

Assisted Range of Motion Microcurrents with Motion Use I.F. #1 on Acutron for torso, or I.F. #3 for extremities. Or use frequency sequence Use 4 8 pads to surround weakened joints or muscle regions. Instruct patient to systematically exercise affected areas while microcurrent is being applied.

Hz Sequence for Microcurrents with Motion Condition Frequencies 13 Scar tissue, adhesions 40 Inflammation, pain 91 Calcium ions 124 Torn, broken 294 Trauma 3 Sclerosis Tissue Frequencies 13 Scar tissue, adhesions 46 Muscle sarcomere 76 Muscles of shoulders 77 Connective tissue 142 Fascia 191 Tendons 195 Bursa, tendon sheaths 396 Peripheral nerves 480 Joint capsule, ligaments 100, 35 Ligaments

Hz Sequence Example Frozen Shoulder Condition Frequencies 40 Inflammation, pain 91 Calcium ions 124 Torn, broken 3 Sclerosis Tissue Frequencies 13 Scar tissue, adhesions 46 Muscle sarcomere 76 Muscles of shoulders 77 Connective tissue 142 Fascia 191 Tendons 195 Bursa, tendon sheaths 480 Joint capsule, ligaments 100, 35 Ligaments

Accelerated Rehabilitation: Interferential Treatment with Motion

Meridian Stretching Use polarized probes with green light or other indicated color. Acutron Probe Preset #2. Place + probe on proximal meridian point and probe on distal point on same extremity. Instruct patient to move limb in such a way as to maximally stretch the affected meridian pathway while you are applying microcurrent stimulation. Can also be done using polarized pad electrodes.

Probe # 2 : Local - Distal Polarized Probes

Wheelchair Exercises Use I.F. #1 or specific frequency sequence. Place 2 sets of 4 pads around low back, hips or knees. Start current. Help patient practice standing up and sitting down, walking in place or doing systematic body stretching, or using exercise equipment with ua pads in place. If necessary move sets of pads to multiple body areas.

Russian Stimulation / Microcurrent Place pads to surround paralyzed or neuropathic area, usually legs. Use two sets of 4 pads. Set to Russian Stimulation, ma Pad Preset #3 on Acutron After 7 15 minutes of Russian Stim without movement, device automatically switches to microcurrent. During this period instruct patient to do exercises Highly beneficial combined with acupuncture

Electro-Massage Use Acutron I.F. #2. For each of the two channels, place one pad on patient and one on back of your hand. Place body pads to bracket affected area. Turn current up to 400 or more ua if tolerated. Mist body with tap water for conductivity, start current and massage. Excellent in conjunction with mobilization exercises, as in shoulder restrictions.

Qi Gong Tui-Na Use two channels of device. Place one pad from each channel above a major joint of the body. Place the other pad from each channel on the back of your hands. Mist part of body to be worke on with tap water for conductivity, start current and massage. Stretch joint to lengthen it, and direct your Qi down to the bone level. Mobilize joint in several directions, using subtle movements while maintaining stretch. Be very sensitive to feedback from the patient. Excellent for extremity joint dysfunctions.

Examples of Combining Needle & Microcurrent Therapy for Rehabilitation General Principle: Needle a few master points on extremities, use microlight on local painful or restricted areas Severe back pain or sciatica: Needle Ling Ku combination hand points and/or distal leg/foot points, use microlight on painful areas or along sciatic radiation with motion after acute stage is passed Neck Pain: Needle Luozhen, SI 3, UB 60 or other points that help release neck, then apply I.F. pads to neck and have patient do ROM or apply traction Frozen shoulder: Needle distal points St 38, Sp 9 or GB 34 Ex deeply, then apply electro-massage and mobilization to shoulder with pain and limitation

Acutron Microlight system

Acutron Pad Techniques Microcurrent Interferential (IF #1 or 2) Accelerated rehab, relief of deep pain Milli-Micro Interferential (IF #5) Acute pain Frequency-Sequence Therapy (Best to use new FS Module) Run sequences of frequencies to target tissue and conditions Russian Stimulation (ma Pads #3) Neurologic deficits, muscle stimulation Microcurrent or High Volt (µa Pads #1 or ma Pads #3) Wound healing acceleration

FST Module

It is usually advisable to apply both: Root and Branch Root: Techniques that treat underlying weakness or toxicity of Organs, glands, the 3 Treasures (Qi, Jing & Shen), hereditary factors or pervasive emotional/soul imbalances. Branch: Treatments that address pain and neuromuscular weakness, imbalance or dysfunction. What the patient comes to you for. When Branch treatments do not work or hold, it is time to look at the Root!

It is best to combine both Root and Branch techniques into your rehab work for best results!
