2 Course Highlights Overview: This course encourages education and discussion with a focus on an evidence-based and comprehensive team approach for concussion management. It provides an overview of the latest guidelines for best practices and takes a closer look at how the visual and vestibular systems can be affected post-head trauma. This course also places an emphasis on clinical indicators (both computerized and non-computerized) to guide healthcare providers in the evaluation and recovery process following head trauma. More specific guidelines within the graded stepwise approach are provided for return to learn, exertion, visual-vestibular functional integration training and dual tasking. There is also an overview of how to assess and treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) that can occur post head trauma.

4 General Information Description This course focuses on an evidence-based and comprehensive team approach for concussion management. It provides an overview of the latest guidelines for best practices and takes a closer look at how the visual and vestibular systems can be affected post-head trauma. This course also places an emphasis on clinical indicators (both computerized and non-computerized) to guide healthcare providers in the evaluation and recovery process following head trauma. More specific guidelines within the graded step-wise approach are provided for return to learn, exertion, visual-vestibular functional integration training and dual tasking. There is also an overview of how to assess and treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) that can occur post head trauma. Rehabilitation is a critical component of a comprehensive concussion management program to ensure a safe return to previous level of function. The material is presented in a format to include lecture and discussion, including a review of case studies. Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: Implement an evidence-based approach to best practices for concussion management through a multi-disciplinary team approach. Understand the role of the vestibular system for eye and head coordination and balance as well as with the autonomic nervous system. Identify the significance of visual impairments s/p head trauma through oculomotor testing and a visual screening questionnaire. Perform clinical visual and vestibular tests for determining the need to integrate into RTP process and/or further referral. Identify cervical dizziness and post traumatic migraines as related to head trauma. Perform assessments and treatments of common BPPV as well as understand atypical cases. Provide care plan for visual-vestibular functional integration training as well as dual tasking with cognitive activities. Transition from clinic to playing field. Explain in lay terms the functional anatomy and physiology of the balance systems with more in depth understanding of the peripheral and central vestibular systems. (continued on next page)

5 General Information Objectives (continued) Recognize the process and criteria for identifying a disease or condition through symptoms, diagnostic tests and lab studies. Recognize the trade-off between sensitivity and specificity as well as understand the principles of a good screening process to identify when to proceed with examination/evaluation or to make referral. Perform a comprehensive history, systems review, and tests and measures to formulate an accurate working diagnosis. Identify appropriate functional goals using both subjective and objective indicators and determine appropriate prognosis and plan of care according to identified diagnosis, including when further testing is warranted. Implement treatment interventions for optimal outcomes using combined theoretical approaches, key indicators to monitor progress and identify if patient is responding appropriately to the interventions(s). 6 Speaker Information Bridgett Wallace, PT, DPT, has a doctorate of physical therapy and holds a competency-based certification in vestibular rehabilitation. She has been treating patients with dizziness and balance disorders for more than 15 years and is the founder and President of 360 Balance & Hearing a specialty clinic for the evaluation and treatment of dizziness and balance disorders that includes both audiology and therapy services. She is also the founder and CEO of Concussion Health, which specializes in online and mobile tools for concussion management. Ms. Wallace s work encompasses a wide variety of patient populations ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, from multi-factorial balance problems to collegiate athletes post-concussion, and inner-ear disorders to neurological disorders. She continues to consult locally and nationally on the development of balance centers and medical management of vestibular disorders, including return-to-play protocols for post-concussion athletes. Ms. Wallace has co-authored two patents on diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders and has developed a sideline assessment tool (PLAY IT SAFE ), which can be used from the junior high to professional level to evaluate athletes at time of injury. She has also authored the chapter on balance for the textbook, Therapeutic Exercise, and is currently co-authoring chapters on vestibular assessment and treatment for an upcoming neurology textbook for therapy students. Ms. Wallace lectures nationwide to other providers regarding dizziness and balance disorders and has been a consultant for The University of Texas Sports Medicine Department since 1998 regarding concussion management and over the last 2 years for the Major League Baseball Umpires Medical Team. She also provides consulting services for establishing comprehensive balance centers and concussion clinics. Bridgett is involved locally and nationally in her professional association and currently serves on a specialty workgroup regarding concussion management for the American Physical Therapy Association. She has also served as a board member for the Austin Groups for the Elderly (AGE), the Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA) and the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA). 360 Balance has received a Top Clinics award from the Austin Business Journal (ABJ) 4 years in a row and, in 2011, Bridgett was one of the recipients of the Health Care Heroes award given by the ABJ and in 2013 received Outstanding Alumni Award from Texas State University.
